Moderat + Tokimonsta = Thursday Turn Up

Club Nokia and Los Angelenos get a special treat tonight when Moderat - the esteemed collaboration of Modoselektor and Apparat - unleashes that good sort of filth as Thursday turns to Friday.  The collab does not tour often - so electronic music aficionados take note.

The late addition of Tokimonsta only makes the bill significantly better --- and makes the decision to not go that much more ignorant.  Don't miss the queen of electronic beats (TOKiMONSTA), where she is likely to perform a handful of tracks from her Ultra release "Half Shadows."  It's rare that such high quality musicianship and production skills packs a bill in Los Angeles and tickets are still available day of --- but they are, and for all ages.

Doors are at 9 and Patricio will be first to the decks.   Follow this link if you want to ensure you're in the building when the music drops.

LocAl fLAvor: Breakfast "True Love Waits"

Fierce, beautiful, well-orchestrated all aptly describe Breakfast's "True Love Waits" - but nothing does it justice like the song itself.  The deeply emotional ballad belted by the beautiful Andrea Adolph is enhanced by dramatic accordion and perfectly peppered ivory and ebony.

The clap breakdown is charming and cute, as is these seemingly young artists opining about how true love waits.  Does it?

Cuz's Corner Ep. 4 - The Mowglis

As spud says, these dudes are "the homies." For about a year, unbeknownst to the Mowglis and myself, we were neighbors. Like, I knew they were people, and I knew they lived down the block. I just didn't know that they were The Mowglis and they didn't know that I had a Jam Van.

They had a robot statue in their front yard made out of guitars and a small television. It was recently removed. Shame on the new tenant for that. When The Mowglis lived their they used to hang signs from a tree branch that jutted out onto Broadway Ave. and alerted folks to their backyard performances. So I'd stumbled upon parties at their pad, unfortunately never caught any music. I did however know a chick that fell off of their porch at one of the shindigs. Maybe they saw her fall, I dunno, she claimed she snuck out of there real quick-like and wasn't seen. My dog, The RZA, played with their dog, Abby, in the street one day. He's white and fluffy, she's black and fluffy. On one of these fluff-head encounters guitarist Josh Hogan and I introduced ourselves. My take away from that meeting was that he was a nice dude, that's it, never occurred that we'd be seeing eachother again in a parking lot about a year later and he'd be with seven of his friends, and I'd be with a few of mine, and we'd hang out, and I'd finally get to hear them play their "love rock."

That's all to say that they are indeed the homies. They kicked it again with us at Bonnaroo, even filmed another Jam Van session in between beers. That's coming out tomorrow.  For now we have this memory from the Roxy, the first time they ever met Spud. He's now the hood's biggest Mowglis fan, and they're now touring the country relentlessly spreading the love. I just hope they still have time to make robot statues.

Blurred Lines Gets Re-Worked by The Roots on Jimmy Fallon

The Roots hold a soft place in founder Brandon Dorsky's SUPERGOOD heart.  Having seen them upwards of 40 times - they capture a special place a top the list of bands he's seen most.  Their acceptance of a spot on Jimmy Fallon's late night program meant less touring than their former 200+ shows a year - but hey, the world now gets the treat of seeing them every night - and that is a net positive.

Earlier this week, they really impressed when Robin Thicke joined the legendary Roots crew and Mr. Fallon for a special rendition of "Blurred Lines" with classroom instruments.   Which version do you prefer?  The video might not be as sexy as the scandalous original, but check it out and decide for yourself.

Los Angeles Tonight (July 2, 2013)

It's Tuesday in LA during TV offseason, here's what you can do after the sun goes down (because when the sun is up y'all need to either be at work or playing outside, stop gettin fat America)...

Outer Minds and Dante vs. Zombies take over the Observatory.  FYI they aren't real zombies, so no need to arm yourselves.

The Garden is at the Smell, those dues are quirky, there's a few other bands playing with them, def. worth $5.00, which coincidentally is the price.

Royal Teeth are cuttin  at The Troubadour.

That should keep you busy.  Stay safe.

BritWeek at The Echo

So it's BritWeek in Los Angeles and The Echo is celebrating with some sweet billings.  If you don't know, BritWeek is "a celebration of all things British in California," so the bands playing are Brit'ish, duh. Whether or not the taco cart down the street is serving bangers and mash is unconfirmed.

Night one (Friday 4/26) features The Veils, they're on Rough Trade Records and they get muchos hits on YouTube.  If that isn't enough for you to make this show your Friday evening plans then you should give them a listen and decide after that.  They're accompanied by Andy Burrows and Pop Noir.

You can assume that night two (Saturday 4/27) is going to be a fairly crowded event as it's headlined by New Build, a love child hatched between members of Hot Chip and a member of LCD Soundsystem (yes, the LCD Soundsytem, OMG).  Expect a sweaty room full of hipsters, I'm not trying to sell it short with that, it will no doubt be awesome.  That bill is also packed with other artists, I will leave it to you to Google them.  I trust you will.  Update:  This event got moved because The Rolling Stones scheduled a surprise performance at The Echopl

Night three is Steve Mason with Dark Furs opening. The poster has Beta Band in parentheses so I dunno if that means he's with the Beta Band or performing their songs, or what, but it's on the poster, so there.  Update:  Steve Mason not able to make it due to Visa issues.

Night four (Tuesday 4/30) passes the reigns to Chad Valley he will coo to you in a Brittish accent while thizzy beats get all dissonant in the background. You will swoon.

They close it out on Night five (Thursday May 2) with Little Boots, who is hot, apparently has small feet, and will make you dance.

In conclusion, GO TO THE ECHO FOR BRITWEEK DAMMIT!

Los Angeles Tonight (April 24, 2013)

It's hump day, so hump, but see some music first, you know, to get in the mood...

It's a relatively slow evening, and we'd say your best shot at a good time would be to go see Bass Drum of Death, Tijuana Panthers, and Beach Party at The Bootleg, if that's the mood you're looking for.  If not, well there's SKATERS at The Echo and The Armada at The Satellite.

Here's to hoping tomorrow is a bit more turnt up...

Los Angeles Tonight (April 17, 2013)

The in-between Coachella week keeps the hits coming.  If you dropped the ball and didn't catch any of the good music that was about town last night, well you have a chance to make up for it tonight.

If it's hip hop that your ears desire then you have several very appealing options like Kitty Pryde (swoon) at the Bootleg Theater, Action Bronson at the Constellation Room at The Observatory, Public Enemy at The House of Blues Sunset Strip, or Teebs and Verbs at Low End Theory at The Airliner.

If it's rock that you want then you've got options for that as well. Tops on our list would be Dinosaur Jr. w/ King Tuff at The Glass HouseAlt J at The Observatory or The Dropkick Murphy's at the Nokia.

If thizz is what you want then look no further then Boys Noize and Claude Vonstroke who are doing a free show at the Sound Nightclub.

There's plenty to be had tonight, so wherever you end up just remember, keep it funky!

Los Angeles Tonight (April 15, 2013)

Got a post Coachella hang-over?  Didn't go, not hungover at all and feeling a bit down?  The best cure for both is to go see more music.  If we're suggesting shows for tonight, and we are, then we'd say go see The Faint with White Arrows at The Observatory.  Or, if you want to get real crazy with your Monday, check out Koshachella with Kosha Dillz, the Hebrew Hammer of Hip Hop (aka Yung Menorah, Lil' Latke, etc. etc.), Y-Luv and some other bands will be rocking The Joint with Kosha tonight.

Full show list is below.   Remember, Monday is just another word for Friday.

Los Angeles Tonight (April 12, 2013)

It is admittedly a slow evening. The turn-up has no doubt left Los Angeles County and made its way to the desert. That's sort of a bummer for those of us stuck here, but you know what? It's a big town, there's always stuff to do.

So maybe hit up the Calvin Harris show at The Palladium.  He's joined by Trey Songz, The Wanted, and Zedd.

Or, if you're feeling adventurous and you want in on a little bit of that desert vibe, get in the whip and head out to Pappy and Harriet's in J-Tree to catch Nick Waterhouse.  That will be a guaranteed good experience.  However, if your pockets are thin and you don't want to make a trip out of it, then drop your finger on any number of the free options listed below.  Odds are you'll land on something fun, and if it isn't, well, that's probably because you didn't try to make it fun...

Giveaway - The Last Bison at The Mint Saturday March 30th

Do you like The Avett Brothers?  The Lumineers?  Heartless Bastards?  Tallest Man on Earth?  Bands that fall into that overly broad but in a good way "Americana" category?  If so, then you may want to jump on The Last Bison bandwagon as soon as possible.  Lucky for you we're giving away a pair of tickets to do just that at The Mint LA this Saturday, March 30.   To win just tweet at "@SUPERGOODMUSIC, @JamintheVan, @MintLA, @TheLastBison #LastBison, or email us at Contests@SUPERGOODMUSIC.com with The Last Bison in the subject.

There's a good chance that this band, who is signed to Universal Music Group, takes off in the next year, so catching them in an intimate venue like The Mint might be worth its weight in "remember when" stories come next year.  Dig on their video for a cover of M83's "Midnight City" as well as their full album over on their Bandcamp.

Hump day yo! Insert sexual innuendo there and proceed to the recommended concerts that will no doubt help you find that hump at the end of the day. I mean, get over that hump.

Anyhow, an exceptional week of music offerings continues in Los Angeles with Mos Def at The Belasco Theater. It's not so often that this place has a concert going on, and this happens to be an awesome one, so if you've got tix or still can get, then lucky you. Also lucky you if you're going to check out Imagine Dragons at The Wiltern for their Night Visions Tour or Wavves + FIDLAR, & Cheatahs at The Echo. I know for sure the latter is sold out, so hit the Craigslist if you're trying to get there last minute. It should be pretty fuzzy up in there. I expect a lot of angst riddled youngins who are angry with their parents to attend.

However, if you have no tickets to any of the bigger marquees this evening and your pockets are running a bit thin, consider the packed line up at tonight's Low End Theory at The Airliner featuring Baths, DAUWD, Dark Time Sunshine, TA-KU + residents Daddy Kev, Nobody, The Gaslamp Killer, D-Styles, & Nocando, that place will probably be pretty turnt tonight. Question is, will you?
