Moderat + Tokimonsta = Thursday Turn Up

Club Nokia and Los Angelenos get a special treat tonight when Moderat - the esteemed collaboration of Modoselektor and Apparat - unleashes that good sort of filth as Thursday turns to Friday.  The collab does not tour often - so electronic music aficionados take note.

The late addition of Tokimonsta only makes the bill significantly better --- and makes the decision to not go that much more ignorant.  Don't miss the queen of electronic beats (TOKiMONSTA), where she is likely to perform a handful of tracks from her Ultra release "Half Shadows."  It's rare that such high quality musicianship and production skills packs a bill in Los Angeles and tickets are still available day of --- but they are, and for all ages.

Doors are at 9 and Patricio will be first to the decks.   Follow this link if you want to ensure you're in the building when the music drops.

Tonight in L.A. (February 13, 2013)

Tonight it is all about the baddest lady in beats, Tokimonsta at Low End Theory.  She will be dropping some gems at The Airliner and possibly some previews from her forthcoming Ultra record, like this Kool Keith flavored single.

Ra Ra Riot rocks The Observatory, Barry Goldberg continues his residency at The Mint, Cold War Kids try and generate as much interest from the crowd as they used to at Bootleg Theater.  Does anyone remember when they sold out El Rey Theater after one record?  If you do - you just might be there.   I remember...but I will still be at Tokimonsta.

Tonight in L.A. (December 31, 2012)

Its the last night to see a concert in 2012 - so make a good choice to close out your year.  LA provides no shortage of those on this Monday night.

Ring the new year with beats from your favorite DJs at a handful of quasi-underground events including Expansion NYE with Daedelus, Tokimonsta, Robert Raimon Roy, A. Chal and So Japan or the Stones Throw family that includes Peanut Butter Wolf, Mayer Hawthorne and J. Rocc, amongst others.  Get tickets to Expansion here.

For some above ground dance floor action - consider Zedd and Nicky Romero at Club Nokia, Markus Schulz at Avalon, Pizza Party at The Central SAPC or Sasha at Exchange LA.

The Sunset Strip heats up with some soul stylings courtesy of Vintage Trouble at The Roxy, posse raps from A$AP Rocky at House of Blues and some unique Bay Area vernacular supplied by E-40 at Key Club.

No list would be complete without consideration for California grown reggae act Rebelution at Hollywood Palladium or mention of Kendrick Lamar's takeover of the Observatory.  Dustbowl Revival hosting "Midnight in Venice" at Del Monte Speakeasy should be some throwback fun as well.

A full list of shows is below:

Gavin Turek - A Soulful Dose to The Central SAPC Residency

If you're not familiar with the soulful spark plug that is Gavin Turek - you can correct that by heading out to The Central SAPC tonight (or the 20th or the 27th).  There's a lot of bite packed in her tiny frame - and her hybrid soul/indie/electronic music is pretty fierce.

With features on Tokimonsta records, and mashups with Ratatat - she's clearly got stripes in the game.  And with an aura and attitude that has you thinking she's an entertainer before she even opens her mouth - it's only a matter of time before she's one you've heard about.

Snag the War of Words (Crips Remix) that mashes Gavin with Ratatat here.

SUPERGOOD is hosting the residency tonight - and Zak Waters, Amy Krebs and The Ross Sea Party round out the solid (and FREE) Tuesday night billing with DJ Freshair holding it down during set changes.  Doors are at 7:30, music starts at 8.    Hope to see you there...

Tonight in L.A. (October 16, 2012)

Lots of options for you LA music mavens tonight.  A lucky few are going to Ellie Goulding's intimate show at Troubadour with opening soundscapes served courtesy of queen beat-tress Tokimonsta.

If you're not going to that - the runners up prize could be free tickets to Riff Raff and Kitty Pryde at Echoplex.  We're giving some of those away so hit us up at @supergoodmusic and mention @checkyoponytail in a tweet to enter the giveaway (or just email contest@supergoodmusic.com w/ subject Riff Raff).

If I weren't (hopefully) kicking it with Tokimonsta, Ellie Goulding and fam - I'd probably be going to Bryan Linares' birthday party at Dim Mak Studios.  The Dim Mak employee (or IC i don't know) - celebrates his aging with beats served courtesy of Them Jeans, Dan Oh and special guests.  You've got to assume one of those guests could be Aoki if he is in LA and I'd put my money on someone else stellar too.  Get dirty on their dance floor birthday style...

Or celebrate the sounds of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers at The Satellite for free with lots of local artists doing their best impersonations.   Free indie on the westside comes to you at The Central SAPC in the form of Go West Young Man, Warships and The Steel Wells.  Neither show would be a bad choice -  but if you want to pay for some rockers - try Freelance Whales and Geographer at El Rey Theatre or Terraplane Sun at Dakota Lounge if you're on the westside.

Eclectic Session with The Seshen, Gavin Turek & More

Tonight at Bootleg catch a series of sexy vocalists over smooth down tempo eclectic beats.  From The Seshen to Gavin Turek - enjoy a night of beautiful voices and solid rhythmic backdrops.

Check out "Oblivion" by The Seshen - a cross between Santigold and Budos Band, with a sprinkle of something like Zhane (might just be homegirls hairdo in the live video that made me think of that one).  Anyhow - their music is fresh and I'm sure the concert will be too.  Get tickets here

Then enjoy Gavin Turek - with her famous Rebecca Gayheart-esque hair and soft voice that's crushed on dope tracks from Tokimonsta ("Darkest" below) and flown on her own material too.  Check her out below and out the show..

Weapons of Audio Premier Peruvian Pan Flute Beatbox on Jam In The Van

Fresh off the presses and straight out the fryer, Weapons of Audio dropped another hot piece of content today – “Life Goes” - the second acoustic video from their Jam In The Van sessions.   The poetic tale of life’s trials and tribulations features the premier of the Peruvian pan flute beatbox and continues the brother’s trend of creating a unique blend of soul, hip-hop and indie rock ethos.  Although it’s a live version,  Weapons of Audio crush another new track from their forthcoming untitled EP.

They’ll also be crushing stages this week –starting with Echoplex on Monday August 27th at Check Yo Ponytail 2 along with Tokimonsta, The Very Best and Jonwayne and then Labor Day weekend at City Stock Festival hosted by the great Jeff Miller (Black Crystal Wolf Kids).   Get your tickets for Check Yo Ponytail here

You can catch another Weapons of Audio video from JITV (included below) as well as many other videos from rising artists around the country.  Make sure the Jam Van can keep making mobile music content by voting for them in this Samsung Startup Thrillist contest here.
