Los Angeles Tonight (March 20, 2013)

Hump day yo! Insert sexual innuendo there and proceed to the recommended concerts that will no doubt help you find that hump at the end of the day. I mean, get over that hump.

Anyhow, an exceptional week of music offerings continues in Los Angeles with Mos Def at The Belasco Theater. It's not so often that this place has a concert going on, and this happens to be an awesome one, so if you've got tix or still can get, then lucky you. Also lucky you if you're going to check out Imagine Dragons at The Wiltern for their Night Visions Tour or Wavves + FIDLAR, & Cheatahs at The Echo. I know for sure the latter is sold out, so hit the Craigslist if you're trying to get there last minute. It should be pretty fuzzy up in there. I expect a lot of angst riddled youngins who are angry with their parents to attend.

However, if you have no tickets to any of the bigger marquees this evening and your pockets are running a bit thin, consider the packed line up at tonight's Low End Theory at The Airliner featuring Baths, DAUWD, Dark Time Sunshine, TA-KU + residents Daddy Kev, Nobody, The Gaslamp Killer, D-Styles, & Nocando, that place will probably be pretty turnt tonight. Question is, will you?

Black Box Revelation Comes to California

Bluesy garage rockers Black Box Revelation are stopping by the Wiltern this Saturday December 3 to join Beady Eye and we wanted to tip everyone off to what should be a fantastic show. The Belgian duo joins Beady Eye, the new band formed by Liam Gallagher and other Oasis members, and also gets support from Incan Abraham.

BBR's latest release Shiver of Joy is already making waves overseas, and their simplistic and powerful approach to 60s garage rock is known to turn some heads. Black Box Revelation uses skuzzy guitars and crashing drums to dress pop melodies in a trench coat of raw power and grit. If you need to hear Black Box Revelation before you call your friends to make plans, here’s a free download link for their EP title track “Shiver of Joy.”

We're giving away three pairs of tickets to the Saturday show - just tweet out @supergoodmusic @livenationLA and @wiltern in the same tweet or e-mail contest@supergoodmusic.com to enter.

If you have friends in San Francisco, let them know Black Box Revelation will be at The Warfield Friday, December 2!

Okkervil River Charms and Disarms with Southern Soul

Will Sheff looks like an English Professor as he steps on stage at the Wiltern wearing a sport coat with his strap twisted and his guitar dangling off of his back. Okkervil River emerges to cheers and whistles after the odd act of Titus Andronicus leaves and the unorthodox mosh pit of hippies and hipsters dissipate. The Austin-based band is left with the task to impress a crowd that isn’t easy to budge, and eventually Sheff turns the tide in a moment that captivates with beauty and leaves the audience inspired and engaged.

Okkervil River reminds me of a band that will start playing at a bar without an audience, and an hour and a few drinks later everyone is on the floor dancing and screaming the chorus in unison. Sheff has a unique vocal presence and he reaches with his range and has his moments. As the band wanders through the beginning of their set, it is evident that some of the bigger fans are in the balcony while people on the floor waver back and forth between interest and boredom. Okkervil River offers consistent songs with a range of style and they bring their smiles to work as they go about their business. It’s easy to tell how much they absolutely love playing music. Sheff has animated onstage antics and although he looks like anything but a front man, he showcases style and soul and the band plays a unique rendition of their own brand of southern indie rock n’ roll.

At one point between songs, an overbearing fan screams, “I love you Will!” and he replies, “I love you too nameless voice in the dark,” drawing a small explosion of laughter from the audience. His charm and passion are undeniable and it’s impossible not to appreciate him as a musician. The show changes immediately when he takes the stage solo and plays A Stone, a beautifully written and emotionally sung acoustic melody that touches on everything great about this band. Their simplicity and unique feel grows on an audience that comes alive and gives the band something back. And together, everyone makes it an intimate experience that is felt and appreciated.

Through the back half of their set they time their hits perfectly, playing For Real and closing with Lost Coastlines before leaving the stage. Sheff comes back on to apologize for their late entrance and tells the audience they’re only being allowed one encore. This is met with a chorus of boos, and they choose to play Unless it Kicks and close respectably although screams for Westfall are shouted by the majority of requesters. As they jam out and come together, the rhythm and the backup harmony of this satisfying and simple talent from Austin closes the show in style. A man well into his sixties catches the attention of everyone on the floor as he wiggles around uncontrollably in the balcony and the band eventually notices and takes to him. When the show is over they give him a thumbs-up for his Elaine Bennis moves that signify the feel-good nature of everyone in the building. I wasn’t won over at first, but this band will fight until they make everyone in the house a believer. Their range is undeniable and their style is in a category by itself, giving them a soulfulness that is impossible not to appreciate. And Will Sheff is an unlikely talent who captivates and makes you a fan. He’s the Seth Rogen of Southern Rock N’ Roll.

Dr. Dog

This post comes courtesy of one of the more avid music fans I know in L.A., Lauren Lomma. She's usually on the cutting edge of most things indie-rock and grade A hipster, and that was even before she worked at Filter.

So - Lomma, like many other followers, retweeted some @supergoodmusic tweet and won free tickets to the Dr. Dog show. She just happened to go out of her way to e-mail some thoughts:

When I first heard about Dr. Dog I thought, “oh this must be some super sweet hip-hop dude” - namely because I assumed “Dr. Dog” was some mash-up of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. I was clearly mistaken. If you enter their name into Pandora Radio you’ll be greeted with a plethora of delectable rock n’ roll tunes, including that of The Beatles. The Beatles - who are, let’s face it, rock n’ roll legends. So that fact alone should lead you to believe that if they’re in that good of company then they've got to be some pretty cool dudes.

Anyway, I went to Dr. Dog Friday night at The Wiltern and had the fortune of standing behind the most wannabe hipsters in the world. They actually (and I saw this) pretended (yes, pretended) to shoot up heroin mid-dance. Naturally, I asked if they’d let me take a picture of their totally awesome dance moves (I’m rolling my eyes here), but they gawked at me, scowled and declined. Who is she? they said. Ugh, well hipster tool-ettes, I’m the chick who wants to plaster your photo all over the internet, so I can properly out you for being so lame.

But back to the music... Dr. Dog was rad - definitely a great band to see live. They had fantastic energy and a good set list to go along with it. They played a delicious sampling of newer and older tunes that had me bouncing on my feet all night long. In my opinion, it’s always a success when you leave a show feeling more energized than when you had arrived.

In any case, I definitely recommend giving Dr. Dog a listen - on the off-chance that you have yet to be turned on to this psychedelic rock group from Philadelphia. I do not recommend however, thinking that you are “too cool for school” and making pseudo shooting-up gestures in attempt to appear “bad ass." I assure you that you are not bad ass, but that you are, in fact, just an idiot.

Lebowski Fest in Los Angeles

Los Angeles has the privilege of hosting the kick-off to this year's Lebowski Fest. Lebowski Fest, which celebrates the esteemed Coen Brother's Film "The Big Lebowski" from the '90s - is an event that brings together fans of The Dude, Jesus, Walter, Shomer Shabbas, Bowling, The Coen Brothers, rugs that tie rooms together and Tara Reid's inherently poor acting skills (as depicted in the brilliant film).

It is a 2 day extravaganza that features both a big room screening of the classic and then a full fledged night of Lebowski themed bowling. White Russians flow freely, handguns may or may not be waived around bowling lanes and someone, undoubtedly, will bring a ringer. You may even find a guy in a purple body suit claiming to be none other than Jesus himself. The question is - will you be there to see it?

The screening is at The Wiltern tonight and the bowling, trivia, etc. event is at Cal Bowl tomorrow. Details are below. You can pick up discounted tickets for both nights for $39.99 - just go over to lebowskifest.com to figure out how.

Fri, April 2nd - Movie Party - Creedence cover set by Paddy and The Poor Boys + special guests Peter Stormare (Uli The Nihilist/Karl Hungus), Jack Kehler (Dude's Landlord), Philip Moon (Woo The Carpet Pisser), Jim Hoosier (Liam), Jeff Dowd (inspiration for The Dude), Peter Exline (inspiration for the story), Robin Jones (Ralph's Girl), Andrea Nunn (Julianne Moore/Maude's Stand-in for the carpet flying scene) and possibly others followed by a screening of The Big Lebowski. Doors 8:30 / Show 9:00 / Movie 10:00 @ The Wiltern - All Ages - $19.99

Sat, April 3rd - Bowling Party - Bowling, costume, trivia and other contests. Special guests Mike Gomez ("Leads" Cop!), Jim Hoosier (Liam), Jeff "The Dude" Dowd and Robin Jones (Ralph's Girl). Bowling and shoe rental included. Bowling is general admission and not guaranteed. 9 pm @ The Cal Bowl - All Ages - $25 adv / $30 day of. RSVP on Facebook

Weekend of Music Took Its Toll

So - thank goodness it is sort of a holiday today - because we still need an extra day to recover from the amazing weekend that was.

It all started with catching Eyedea & Abilities late set at Echoplex on Thursday. The 200-300 people who remained were hype on Rhymesayers but admittedly a little thin on their knowledge of Eyedea's lyrics. With one of the most potent arsenals of verbal weaponry you could possibly conceive of, Eyedea's performance lacked a little spunk because Eyedea had less verbal crowd energy to feed off of.

Nonetheless, the MC delivered a somewhat inspired performance. Likewise, the jamband STS9, took stage at The Wiltern on Friday as part of their national tour. The show was pretty crowded and the band delivered a cohesive set of music. But, it unfortunately was minimal on the heavy rhythm jungle jamming and lacked the songs that have become my live favorites. (At the least, the debut of their new hat by the rising underground clothing company Grassroots California was a huge hit!)

These touring veterans, Eyedea & STS9, just did not hold a candle to the rising acts we saw for the rest of the weekend....

Performing as part of the STS9 after party series, Big Gigantic and Elliott Lipp absolutely wrecked The Roxy late night Friday. Although the show was not completely sold out, the energy felt as if it was.

Big Gigantic really turned our head. It was the first time we'd seen this group and we'll expect big things from them in the future, gigantic things perhaps. Their sax fueled dub party was intoxicating and kept the crowd moving (as seen above). Some of their music is available for download for free and the group is hopefully taking the festival circuit by storm this summer with a scheduled performance at Wakarusa already.

Elliott Lipp (seen in the Grassroots California Bakers hat above) was also providing the fuel for the party as he closed out the late night jam on his computer. Even as the clock approached the 4 am curfew, the crowd was clamoring for more.

We had so much fun, we raced back to The Roxy the next night hoping it would somehow be Groundhogs Day. It wasn't - but we got a pleasant surprise because it was Zombie Prom! Saint Motel played host at the sold out 2nd Annual Zombie Prom extravaganza. With a featured zombie photo booth, bloodied and batty drunk fans and love from the crowd that was only exacerbated by Valentines Day - Saint Motel delivered a totally inspired performance (AJ featured singing below).

With a handful of sold out and absolutely spectacular shows in Los Angeles under their belt - we at SUPERGOODMUSIC sort of think that Saint Motel will be one of the explosions from the LA scene in 2010 that ends up on the national radar. Let your friends at SXSW know that they need to go see this indie rock quartet.

The Sounds - October 21, 2009 - The Wiltern

Sometimes the best decisions in life are made in an instant, and although that may sound a little dramatic, but it completely encompasses how I feel about last night. At the very last possible moment, I decided to buy tickets to see one of my favorite bands The Sounds, as they played the first night of a two-night residency at The Wiltern.

Last night marked the sixth time that I have seen The Sounds and I would have to say that it was the best that I have ever seen them. With the release of their third album Crossing The Rubicon, the sounds now have a fantastic catalog that makes for an amazing live show. If you’re a fan, you won’t be disappointed in their set lists because they play everything you want to hear. From one of the first songs they wrote as a band (“Living In America”) to their latest single (“Beatbox,” which, in my opinion, was the best song from last night) and everything in between. Every time that I see The Sounds I always leave thinking about how incredible lead singer Maja is, and though I did think she was as amazing as always, I was really taken back by how great the band is as a whole and was angry with myself for never really appreciating how great they have been in the past.

With the exception of a few rows in the mezzanine, the venue was packed and although it’s taken them a long time to get to this level of success in America, the band will be the first ones to point out that non stop touring has brought them to where they are today. I think the best part about being a fan of The Sounds is that I’ve watched them go from playing a small club in downtown Detroit with about 50 people to a sold out show in Los Angeles, and I’ve loved every minute of the ride.

Here is the set list from last nights show:

Crossing the Rubicon

Dorchester Hotel

Queen of Apology

Hit Me!

Mine For Life

No One Sleeps When I'm Awake

Midnight Sun

Rock 'N Roll

Seven Days a Week

Living In America
