Los Angeles Tonight (April 15, 2013)

Got a post Coachella hang-over?  Didn't go, not hungover at all and feeling a bit down?  The best cure for both is to go see more music.  If we're suggesting shows for tonight, and we are, then we'd say go see The Faint with White Arrows at The Observatory.  Or, if you want to get real crazy with your Monday, check out Koshachella with Kosha Dillz, the Hebrew Hammer of Hip Hop (aka Yung Menorah, Lil' Latke, etc. etc.), Y-Luv and some other bands will be rocking The Joint with Kosha tonight.

Full show list is below.   Remember, Monday is just another word for Friday.

Tonight in L.A. (October 27, 2012)

If you're not already tired of your costume or too hung over to move - Halloween themed parties are all the rage again tonight - and dance-a-thons are in no shortage.

No matter what side of town you're on - there is someone pushing a few buttons to keep your feet moving.  On The westside, those buttons are pushed courtesy of Goldroom, Yuksek, Steffi Graf and Jamuel St. Jones at The Central SAPC.  If you missed their show on Thursday at The Echo/Echoplex, tonight's your chance to correct that mistake at this Audio Absinthe presents event.  You can  buy tickets here too.

O.C'ers shouldn't come up to the beach though - I'd advise sticking down by Detroit Bar for Flight Facilities and Fred Falke, unless, of course, you were already going downtown to Club Nokia to see Flight Facilities open for The Presets.   Benny Benassi, Congorock and Pink is Punk also get heavy downtown at Exchange LA and Belasco Theater hosts a haunted mansion with $5,000 in cash prizes for costumes.

Take a trip up the 101 and contine to Halloween BOOootie LA at Echoplex or try Hollywood's Avalon to dance wee into the morning with Erick Morillo or with Supreme Team presenting DJ Felli Fel and Will.i.am at Supperclub.  Its a potentially destination for the hip-hop fans spilling out of the sold out Macklemore & Ryan Lewis show at Fonda Theatre (Note, if anyone can find Macklemore's threads from this video, aka his jacket, I kind of want that to be the "cold ass honky" as my Halloween costume for tonight).

There is other hip-hop stuff too - like Brother Ali and Homeboy Sandman at El Rey Theatre or Skeme at Key Club.  Rock fans get a true treat with Jane's Addiction at The Wiltern.  They're supported by Thenewno2.  The Railroad Revival Tour chooches through town too with Band of Horses at Warner Grand Theater. Since it's Halloween Weekend - KCRW hosts their masquerade ball with tunes served up by Z-Trip, Mexican Institute of Sound, Dustbowl Revival, Hanni El Khatib and more.   White Arrows at Constellation Room is also a SUPERGOOD choice.

Full list of shows below...

  • Jane’s Addiction, Thenewno2 @ The Wiltern
  • Erick Morillo @ Avalon
  • My Ruin, Goldsboro, Behold! The Monolith, All Hail The Yeti @ The Viper Room
  • Hunter Valentine, Queen Caveat, Cherri Bomb, Life Down Here, DJ Hollywood Julio @ The Roxy

Its an Unknown Mortal Orchestra Kind of Weekend...

This weekend Los Angeles gets a double dose of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, the Portland groomed psychedelic indie rock act formed by New Zealand native Ruban Nielson. After their arrival in 2010 and subsequent eruption as a buzz band in 2011, they dropped their Wes Anderson esque video for "Strangers are Strange" in February 2012 in anticipation of their tour.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Strangers Are Strange from Pharm on Vimeo.

Now they find themselves on that tour and inhabiting the Echoplex (Saturday) and The Central SAPC (Sunday) - with support from White Arrows and trash-pop act TRMRS (who play earlier that day at KXSC Fest for FREE!). We have two pairs of tickets to give away for each show - email contest@supergoodmusic.com or comment on our facebook page to enter. Winners will be notified by 2 pm on the day of the show.

Speaking of UMO - look out for Kosha Dillz next drop off The Jetlag EP coming soon - it features him and Ducky rapping over some Unknown Mortal Orchestra on a track called "Friends." Check www.koshadillzworld.com or his Facebook for the release...

Get Hip To Gardens & Villa: Playing Tonight at Bootleg

Get hip to Gardens and Villa because these boys aren't going anywhere. Equipped with a quiver of flutes, vocals with great range and a vibrant indie band - this troupe may just be the next thing to hit out of Los Angeles.

Not only are their live shows highly entertaining (and occasionally reminiscent of Jethro Tull), but their recordings are solid. I really dig "Black Hills" for which they made a music video

Black Hills by Gardens & Villa from Secretly Jag on Vimeo.

The band hits the road with L.A.'s latest breakout, Foster The People, but I'm thinking that Gardens and Villa could steal the thunder. The lead vocalists voice is a bit more polished and less annoying. Plus, it feels more indie wholesome.

And, unlike Foster The People, who have many songs that unfold into similar jungle jams that have Foster playing one drum rather poorly (i.e. "Broken Jaw", "Helena Beat", etc.) - Gardens and Villa's jam sessions have real chemistry and don't all sound the same.

You can catch these cool cats with a bunch of other indie all-stars tonight at Bootleg Bar. They are joined by White Arrows, Milo Greene and Dangerbird Records' Eulogies. Should be awesome. And it is FREE!!!!
