Los Angeles Tonight (April 30, 2013)

Its the final day of the month - which could mean its time to tame down spending to make rent...or its time for the turn up.  If its the latter - we've got a host of musical offerings to suggest.

Topping our list are two shows on the eastside.  If you're feeling Brit Week, then Chad Valley is your man.  He produces and sings simultaneously, effecting his vocals into some sexy, somewhat ambient strange indie electronic music.  His show at The Echo is definitely worthy of your attention.  For more sexy vocals, albeit a different variety that is more hip-hop and poetry informed, consider Robert Raimon Roy at Bootleg Theater.  The triple R threat is joined by the soul of Jack Davey and the electronics of Jonwayne making for an eclectic, eccentric night of dopeness.

We have tickets to give away for both shows - so hit up contest@supergoodmusic.com or mention us and the artists on twitter to get in on the action!

On the grittier rock side of things consider Great White Buffalo at Hemingway's or The Record Company at The Mint.  For the latter, I might advise sticking out for their Cinco De Mayo show at Venice Love Shack because its $10 for all you can drink and all you can jam out to.

Full list of shows below.

Los Angeles Tonight (Monday, April 29th)

Booo hooo, the Lakers lost. Get over it by seeing some live music tonight.

For an energetic Monday, Pitchfork's favorite Canadians, Metz, bring their hard-hitting sound to the Troubadour with support from White Lung and Mrs Magician.

KCRW'S It's a School Night is bringing the beats proper this evening with Big Black Delta's record release party going down at Bardot. Shy Girls, Emma Ejwertz and The Last Internationale fill out the bill.

Tonight is Gavin Turek's last night of her April residency at The Bootleg Theatre. Helping Gavin close out the month are Zak Waters, Fellow Bohemian and a special guest is substituting in place of Boom D, who is stuck in NOLA.

Don't forget to head on out to the West side this coming weekend and join us at the Cinco de Mayo bash "El Dia De La Heady." Lagunitas and Sailor Jerry are providing libations, The Record Company, The Dustbowl Revival, Ivory Deville, The Dead Ships, The Diamond Light and Highway Poets are providing the tunes, and, most importantly, Jam in the Van is providing the headiness. Hope to see you all out there.

BritWeek at The Echo

So it's BritWeek in Los Angeles and The Echo is celebrating with some sweet billings.  If you don't know, BritWeek is "a celebration of all things British in California," so the bands playing are Brit'ish, duh. Whether or not the taco cart down the street is serving bangers and mash is unconfirmed.

Night one (Friday 4/26) features The Veils, they're on Rough Trade Records and they get muchos hits on YouTube.  If that isn't enough for you to make this show your Friday evening plans then you should give them a listen and decide after that.  They're accompanied by Andy Burrows and Pop Noir.

You can assume that night two (Saturday 4/27) is going to be a fairly crowded event as it's headlined by New Build, a love child hatched between members of Hot Chip and a member of LCD Soundsystem (yes, the LCD Soundsytem, OMG).  Expect a sweaty room full of hipsters, I'm not trying to sell it short with that, it will no doubt be awesome.  That bill is also packed with other artists, I will leave it to you to Google them.  I trust you will.  Update:  This event got moved because The Rolling Stones scheduled a surprise performance at The Echopl

Night three is Steve Mason with Dark Furs opening. The poster has Beta Band in parentheses so I dunno if that means he's with the Beta Band or performing their songs, or what, but it's on the poster, so there.  Update:  Steve Mason not able to make it due to Visa issues.

Night four (Tuesday 4/30) passes the reigns to Chad Valley he will coo to you in a Brittish accent while thizzy beats get all dissonant in the background. You will swoon.

They close it out on Night five (Thursday May 2) with Little Boots, who is hot, apparently has small feet, and will make you dance.

In conclusion, GO TO THE ECHO FOR BRITWEEK DAMMIT!

Los Angeles Tonight (April 24, 2013)

It's hump day, so hump, but see some music first, you know, to get in the mood...

It's a relatively slow evening, and we'd say your best shot at a good time would be to go see Bass Drum of Death, Tijuana Panthers, and Beach Party at The Bootleg, if that's the mood you're looking for.  If not, well there's SKATERS at The Echo and The Armada at The Satellite.

Here's to hoping tomorrow is a bit more turnt up...

Los Angeles Tonight (April 17, 2013)

The in-between Coachella week keeps the hits coming.  If you dropped the ball and didn't catch any of the good music that was about town last night, well you have a chance to make up for it tonight.

If it's hip hop that your ears desire then you have several very appealing options like Kitty Pryde (swoon) at the Bootleg Theater, Action Bronson at the Constellation Room at The Observatory, Public Enemy at The House of Blues Sunset Strip, or Teebs and Verbs at Low End Theory at The Airliner.

If it's rock that you want then you've got options for that as well. Tops on our list would be Dinosaur Jr. w/ King Tuff at The Glass HouseAlt J at The Observatory or The Dropkick Murphy's at the Nokia.

If thizz is what you want then look no further then Boys Noize and Claude Vonstroke who are doing a free show at the Sound Nightclub.

There's plenty to be had tonight, so wherever you end up just remember, keep it funky!

Los Angeles Tonight (April 16, 2013)

Gary Clark Jr. is at The Roxy tonight, so you should go there.  100% certifiably guaranteed guitar amazingness.

If not there, then maybe Foals at El Rey.

If not Foals then maybe Modest Mouse at the Fox Theater in Pamona.

If not Modest Mouse then maybe Sparks at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

If you're scared of ghosts then maybe Salva, Gaslamp Killer, Thundercat, and Franki Chan at the Echoplex.  If you're scared of the trap, then maybe Dim Mak Studios for Keys N Krates and SPECIAL SECRET GUESTS.

If none of those then maybe Smith Westerns at The Echo, Franz Ferdinand at The Fonda, Aesop Rock at The Observatory, The Make Up at The Glass House... I could go on, but what I'm trying to say is there is a ton going on tonight so you should Tivo your programs and get out there.

Los Angeles Tonight (April 15, 2013)

Got a post Coachella hang-over?  Didn't go, not hungover at all and feeling a bit down?  The best cure for both is to go see more music.  If we're suggesting shows for tonight, and we are, then we'd say go see The Faint with White Arrows at The Observatory.  Or, if you want to get real crazy with your Monday, check out Koshachella with Kosha Dillz, the Hebrew Hammer of Hip Hop (aka Yung Menorah, Lil' Latke, etc. etc.), Y-Luv and some other bands will be rocking The Joint with Kosha tonight.

Full show list is below.   Remember, Monday is just another word for Friday.

Los Angeles Tonight (April 12, 2013)

It is admittedly a slow evening. The turn-up has no doubt left Los Angeles County and made its way to the desert. That's sort of a bummer for those of us stuck here, but you know what? It's a big town, there's always stuff to do.

So maybe hit up the Calvin Harris show at The Palladium.  He's joined by Trey Songz, The Wanted, and Zedd.

Or, if you're feeling adventurous and you want in on a little bit of that desert vibe, get in the whip and head out to Pappy and Harriet's in J-Tree to catch Nick Waterhouse.  That will be a guaranteed good experience.  However, if your pockets are thin and you don't want to make a trip out of it, then drop your finger on any number of the free options listed below.  Odds are you'll land on something fun, and if it isn't, well, that's probably because you didn't try to make it fun...

Los Angeles Tonight (April 6, 2013)

I know we're less than a week out from Coachella. I know everyone is running around this weekend trying to buy up all the coolers, sunscreen, liquor and glowsticks they can get their hands on. It's a beautiful day in Los Angeles though, so once you've stocked up on your goods, get your butt out and see some tunage...

Our buddies' the Tijuana Panthers (we have a Jam Van session coming from these guys next week) bring the fuzz (rock, not 5-0) to the Glass House in Pomona tonight to support The Three O'Clock.

Tijuana Panthers "Tony's Song"

Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk will be filling up the Roxy with NOLA-style booty shakin' jams that you won't want to miss.

Dumpstaphunk "Do You Want My Love"

If heady vibes are what's going to  tickle your pickle this evening, you have two great options with Big Head Todd & The Monsters at HOB Sunset and Dark Star Orchestra at The Canyon.

Dark Star Orchestra "Sugar Magnolia"

If the work week kicked your booty and you were too exhausted to catch Sammy Adams and T. Mills at the El Rey last night, you're in luck, as they have another show at the same venue tonight. Make sure to pop your collar on entry or else the frat brothers won't let you. True story.

Sammy Adams "All Night Longer"

And lastly, if you're looking for laughs, KROQ's got your covered with their annual APRIL FOOLISHNESS concert at the Gibson Amphitheatre featuring Jay Mohr, Bill Burr, Doug Benson and more

Month in Music: March (R. Kelly Gets Patriotic, JT Rips Off Mayer Hawthorne, The Allman Brothers Back At It and More)

r-kelly

Full Disclosure: I consider myself a big R. Kelly fan. Party anthems, cheesy inspirational songs, tunes about about bonding with homies, baby making music...the man can do it all. You can imagine my excitement when I found out that there was an official petition on the White House website to make "Ignition (Remix)", a true classic in every sense, the new national anthem for these United States of America.

Screen Shot 2013-04-01 at 3.57.22 PM

After deep analysis, I'm on board with this petition for the following 3 reasons:

1) The "Let's Be Lovers, Not Fighters" Argument:

Our current National Anthem mentions "rockets" and "bombs"....that's some bleak ish right there.  The remix to Ignition invites everyone to "After parties", "hotel lobbies" and proceeds to explain that at 4 am, the lobby will be cleared so we'll all head up to hotel rooms and "freak somebody". That's a message I can get behind.

2) The "Let's Be All Inclusive" Argument:

I'm not that well versed in politics, but it seems like there if a lot of ideas based on exclusion being thrown around in the political arena these days. In the world of Ignition, and other slow jams by Kels, there is no exclusion. He's got "fellas on his left" and "hunnies on his right" and he makes note that he is bringing them all together for "junkin all night". Bringing people together folks. We need more of that.

3) The "Let's Do This For Ethical Reasons" Argument:

Ethics seem to be a thing of the past. In our "me, me, me" culture, no one is polite or courteous anymore (and this is coming from a New Yorker). We need a national anthem that can inspire everyone  to start treating each other a little bit better on a day to day basis. Ignition is a courteous and giving jam. He even starts off the song by declaring that he's not trying to be rude (mensch move on Kels part) and that he simply wants to give a lady the "beep beep" while also receiving the "toot toot". Giving and taking is what life is all about. Polite...check. Courteous...check.

We can learn a lot from Mr. Kelly about how to treat people (minus one particular incident, but hey, Kels is human just like the rest of us).

 JT Ripping Fools Off

161414994-jt-grammys          mayer-hawthorne

If you've been in a medically induced coma for the past month you still probably know that Justin Timberlake is back on the music train with his highly anticipated (by who exactly?) new album, "The 20/20 Experience". Justin came roaring back with an old school, 50s soul vibe that left Mayer Hawthorne asking himself, "What the fuck am I supposed to do now?"

In worse news, JT claims to be releasing another album in the fall. Whose look and vibe is he going to steal from next you ask? I don't know. I do love to gamble though so I set some odds on a couple different possibilities:

Unknown-2

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes

Odds: 14-to-1

Tell me you can't see JT dressed in shredded clothes, completely disregard the concept of a shower and underwear, and grow a thick beard. I can't either, just the idea of Timbaland dressed in hippy garb makes me laugh. Long shot for sure though.

 Unknown-3

Riff Raff

Odds: 9-1

JT does loves rap music and is quite well versed in it's history, as we've seen many times on Jimmy Fallon's show. It was hard to decide which rapper's ethos JT would steal from. 2 Chainz and Trinidad James were both strong contenders. Andre 3000 was the strong runner up, but the afro situation does seem to be something that would have to be overcome. So when in doubt, put the money on Riff Raff. I think Riff Raff's wardrobe is quite similar to some stuff JT still has in the closet from his boy band days, gold teeth are everywhere now and Riff Raff loves to collaborate with his contemporaries like JT does.

 images

The Black Keys

Odds: 5-1

What band have more songs on more platforms than the Black Keys at the moment? HBO shows, car commercials, bumpers to commercial breaks on sporting events, these guys are everywhere. This is the easiest persona for JT to rip from elsewhere. Jeans and t-shirts, shitting on the Biebs in the press, hell, the Black Keys even collaborate with rappers like JT does. They also have some street cred for not being soft with their tunes. In most instances, this would be the front runner. This is not most instances though.

images-1

Kanye West

Odds: 2.5-1

Kanye came out and said he's still cool with Jigga man, but he don't fuck with the JT "Suit and Tie" bullshit. What's Timberlake do? Does he tell Ye that he mistook his baby mama's ass for Joey Fatone? No. Does he tell Ye that he has better plastic surgeons for his family members? No. So that's why we're giving this the best odds. How big of an F-U would it be to Kanye if come Fall, we saw Jessica Biel with a huge ass and jet black hair being shopped around by her mother like a whore on Game of Thrones while JT goes on live tv to make uncomfortable comments about political figures in the wake of tragedy all while wearing a leather mini-skirt and telling the world that he interned at Yves Saint Laurent, so he knows fashion and if he wears a black mini-skirt, well goddamnit, that's fashion. What would Ye do to retaliate? Start a boy band? We need more "Hip Pop" beef out there like this.

 Unknown-4

The Allman Brothers Band returned to the Beacon for their annual March residency. I have a special place in my heart for Allman shows at the Beacon as they were my first experience with all things heady. First time I encountered heady people, first time I ate heady treats, first time I saw heady things that weren't really there, all happened at the Allman Brothers Beacon run. It's nice to see the boys are still kicking ass and taking names.

Quick Ones While You Were Away:

My Chemical Romance Breaks Up...I couldn't give a shit about this. I just found it fascinating this got press.

mcr

Billy Joel made a kids wish come true at Vanderbilt University. This is just awesome. The onions on this kid though, huh?

The Strokes released their heartless new album that makes me think they all just wanted a payday and threw away the entire concept of "letting your sound grow

[soundcloud url="http://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/3704032" params="" width=" 100%" height="450" iframe="true" /]

Lou Reed cancels tour dates again. This is becoming all to common an occurrence for me. Lou Reed announces that he is playing somewhere, he gets VU fans all excited that maybe he'll put forth some effort and not sound like he just got out of a lobotomy, and then cancels his shows last minute. I guess ole Lou ain't doing too hot these days, but quit messing with my emotions man.

Latest Obnoxious Trend in Hipsterdom: Bands with no vowels

I guess hipsters are too cool for vowels now. At some point the hipster god's that be, got together and decided that from this moment forward, license plate spelling would be the correct form of grammar between Williamsburg and Silver Lake. We got bands with names like TNGHT and DWTWN making the rounds. My English teacher is furious right now.

Latest Obnoxious Music Cruise: Weezer Cruise

So it was announced this month that there will be a Weezer cruise in February 2014. Yes, that's right folks, pasty and pale 30 somethings taking over the Carribean with "The Sweater Song" and "Beverly Hills" blasting on repeat. Rivers must look sexy in a bathing suit.

[caption id="attachment_6585" align="aligncenter" width="250"]images-3 Do you really want to see these guys in a bathing suit?[/caption]

Artist to Watch: Hanni El-Khatib

Dude is pretty sick on the electric. Check em out...

Los Angeles Tonight (April 1, 2013)

That part about Dr. Dre at Santa Monica Pier just is not true.  It was meant to be a joke.  While it may be April Fool's Day, the launch to FREE April residencies is no joke with Gavin Turek's takeover of Bootleg coming out with Western Scene, Hustle Roses and the DJ stylings of Downtown Lobby's Channel One.  FYI - SUPERGOODMUSIC will be presenting Gavin's final residency show on the 29th. There is also Hands at The Echo with a DJ set from Aaron Castle and support from Mayan, Jefferson and The Chances.

It's A School Night brings in Among Savages, The Moth & Flame, Miner and DJ sets by Skemmadox and Vitalic Noise to Bardot.  The Foxygen part of the bill evaporated - and thus no Foxygen as previously reported in the Concert Blast.
