Watch The Grammys - its the Best Live Music in Town Tonight

We could advise you to go to various places in town tonight to catch the potential next big thing or just to hear a smooth crooner or some sexy guitar, however, we don't think that is where you'd witness the best and most supergood music there is to see on this last Sunday of January.

Actually, this is one of the few times we are going to advise you to stay home. Stay there and watch the Grammys. Maybe leave to go to Target to get yourself some 3D specs to enjoy the Michael Jackson tribute performance to the fullest, but maybe you saved yours from Avatar and are hoping those work.

If the Grammy's are too mainstream for you or you just want to DVR them for time porting so that you can skip commercials and enjoy a Sunday on the town, then here is who is playing and where they are playing:

Anderszewski Plays Beethoven (2PM), Los Angeles Master Chorale: Almost A Capella (7PM) @ Hollywood Bowl
Major Johnson-Finley (7PM), Katie Costello (8PM), Wesley Smith (9PM) @ Room 5

Kick Off Your Grammy Weekend with The Mighty Mos Def, or Diplo, or The Mother Hips, or the cast of SUPER TROOPERS!

Grammy Weekend really kicks off tonight as a slew of artists perform around town and some exciting Grammy related events pop off (like DipDive's event at Palladium with Diplo, David Guetta, Will.I.Am, Kelis and other performers). Below you will find a full list of concerts for the night, but several, like the Palladium event, are worthy of special mention:

* Mos Def is performing at the new Key Club tonight. Although the venue's official launch party is not until tomorrow (and is being hosted by LL Cool J), the soulful hip-hopper/actor/poet Mos Def is gracing Sunset Blvd. with his presence for a surely inspiring performance. Although we've only caught him a few times, Mos Def's show is truly a thing of beauty. It is no wonder that he has successfully crossed over to being an actor because his stage presence is undeniable and magnetic. Seamlessly woven together words are Mos Def's ammunition and when he grabs the mic, the guy's glock is cocked, loaded and ready to fire. There are few in the business who put on a performance the way Mos does and to catch him in the intimate Key Club will truly be a treat. For $30 advance and $35 at the door - that ticket is a steal.

* The Mother Hips at The Hotel Cafe. These guys straight rock and, in a perfect world, would be playing a larger venue that maintained the intimate feel of the Hotel Cafe. Like Mos Def, the opportunity to catch an artist of this caliber in such a small room does not come around often. Fans of rock n roll probably already scooped up these tickets as I hear they are sold out, but if you have not yet gotten yours - maybe you can scrounge around craigslist or the venue's doors itself for a chance to see the Hips in action. Later in the evening, Samuel Stewart, an up and coming guitarist and singer, will also be performing.

* Broken Lizard Comedy Group - the men responsible for the great films SUPER TROOPERS and BEER FEST - are performing comedy at the El Rey all night. With shows at both 7 pm and 10 pm, the mid-wilshire corridor will certainly be filled with laughter and smiling faces. For fans of either film, the comedy group does perform some bits from their famed works.

* Last, but not least, The Pimps of Joytime are playing at On The Rox. Pretty good afro-cuban-funk band with some cats that clearly like hip-hop too. Caught them at Air Conditioned Lounge last time they came thru and it was a fun and danceable performance. Their cut "Bonita" is pretty spectacular live.

Jenny Lewis & Friends Haiti Benefit Concert at The Largo

Last night I had the honor of attending the Jenny Lewis & Friends Haiti Benefit Concert at The Largo and I must start off by saying that my love for the indie-rock goddess has only grown exponentially since seeing her. For those of you that are unaware of who Jenny Lewis is may know her from the successful band Rilo Kiley, but as of late, Miss Lewis has been going solo with two albums (Rabbit Fur Coat at Acid Tongue).

Last night was a very special evening of music. Jenny was joined by singer-songwriter and boyfriend Jonathan Rice, newly reformed indie band Azure Ray, Jason Boesel and Morgan Nagler (from Whispertown2000) and Becky Stark (Lavendar Diamond). You got the feeling that they threw the event together quickly because it wasn't an organized set of music. It was basically Jenny Lewis and a group of her friends who all gathered together to play songs that are both new and old. She prefaced the show by telling concertgoers that whenever her and her friends get together they usually play songs that they have recently written for one another to see if they can add anything and to give constructive criticism.

To begin, they all played three songs each and then realized that they had more time so each artist played one more song. Anyone who came to the event hoping for hits from both her Rilo Kiley days and her solo albums were probably disappointed, but for me, I was just in awe of seeing an artist that I admire so much just stand on a stage with a guitar and play.

The Largo has had a string of benefit shows since the tragedy in Haiti took place, and they have raised over $33,000 dollars already and made a promise to continue to aid Haiti with a benefit show each month.

For more information on how you can help the people of Haiti visit the Official Red Cross Website or you can go to the official Doctors Without Borders Website (which is where the money from Jenny Lewis & Friends went towards).

We Miss Conan Already :(

Video Review: Dan Black - "Symphonies"

In our picture-painted world we can’t help but try to escape the attack of this film, that book, this new product, and that beautiful man way over there that I’ll never get to meet.

My resolution to the problem???

CREATE SYMPHONIES.

In everything I do.

In everything I see.

In all that I touch.

In all that I am and hope to be.

Dan Black fucking goes for it in his music video for “Symphonies.”

Combining the simple romanticism of old French black and white cinema with electro-goodness that’s so bright you can practically lick the screen, to Donnie Darko-like references, to the mother of them all, Godzilla (!!!), how can you NOT be satisfied?!

“Gimme, gimme, symphonies/
Gimme more than the life I see/
Score adds up/
Angels play/
Let my loneliness get blown away/”

PS: Anyone who promotes themselves with a sketch of their bodies attached to a handgun head is so very much A-OK in my book. Check it out here and give Mister Black some sweet, sweet fan love: http://www.danblacksound.com/

Music Monday in Los Angeles.

The last week of January kicks off with a handful of good live events. You'll find me kicking it at Hunnypot Radio early on as the station potentially hosts one of its last radio events at the Hunnypot House (8926 1/2 National). The guys are considering relocating to a venue - so all you venues who want a cool radio show to be broadcast from within your walls, considering hitting up Hunnypot's John Anderson to discuss a possible collabo.

After Hunnypot, there is a good chance I go to Carbon for Funkmosphere and wait around until 11:30/midnight to catch the break-dancing crews that roll through. IF I'm feeling a little more indie or a little too impatient, I will probably head to Echo to see The French Semester's final installment of their January residency. Their performance has improved considerably in the last 6-8 months and 2010 may be their year to shine. They've got some gigs set up for February already - but if you're cheap, than tonight would be the night to see them.

If I didn't already have all these competing obligations, I definitely would be considering going to Largo for the Love & Haiti Benefit Show. The opportunity to see Sarah Silverman, Aziz Ansari and Ed Helms all perform in the same night is kind of too good to pass up. Helms cameo last week on Conan was absolutely hilarious - and I can only imagine what sort of comedic gems these all-stars have saved for this event.

If you feel driving a ways, Girls are playing at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. Detroit Bar is an amazing venue and the Girls could easily tear the house down. I heard good things about their performance in LA at the Troubadour, but I unfortunately missed it. If you're a huge fan or you are near Detroit Bar - it would be wise to check it out.

Stone Foxes Laid Down at The Mint (literally); What's Hot in LA Tonight?

Last night was a spectacular musical introduction to the weekend. The Stone Foxes rocked so hard it was painful. They came and sang in the crowd, laid on the ground and Shannon beat the shit out of his drums! The entire crowd was thirsty for more of the quartet's ridiculously good vocal rock. I look forward to having them come back to L.A. sometime very soon! (maybe they will play with Saint Motel - that'd be fun!)

I wish I could say there was something nearly as exciting on the concert queue, but there is not. The Stone Foxes are simply just that good. Sure, Black Lips are in town at El Rey with Nobunny and Jemina Pearl, Funky Sole is popping off at the Echo and Dudley Perkins is playing at Dakota Live Music Lounge. I may head to Dakota, but otherwise will be taking a night off. The Stone Foxes really were so good that I feel totally fulfilled as far as live music goes. You can check out a video from their performance last night above or here, and hit up SUPERGOODMUSIC's youtube channel for other cool video content!

Enjoy your night! Follow us on twitter @supergoodmusic and @supergoodrca!

Getting Stone(foxe)d on a Friday Night...

A lot of steamy music in town on this somewhat chilly Los Angeles Friday. We're going to hit things up at The Mint with Wendy Darling and The Stone Foxes. We just cannot get enough of the Foxes bluesy-rock vibe. It is eat your heart out good. If you want to get down on some of that vibe too - you could win free tickets by texting Boom D at 310-592-2094. Your text must say "I want to get stoned with the foxes" and you will win a pair of tickets while supplies last.

If you don't feel like getting down with that - we also recommend Cold War Kids at The Wiltern, Jon Brion & Friends at The Largo, Andy Clockwise at Hotel Cafe, the Haiti Benefit at Echoplex, Eric Lindell at Cafe Boogaloo or Schwayze & Kelley James at The Roxy.

Eric Lindell is just sick on the guitar - so if you like jammy rock than don't make the mistake of missing him in that very intimate venue. The Benefit for Haiti will feature music from Nico Vega, as well as several other artists. If you're looking to do a mitzvah and enjoy yourself at the same time - you can't go wrong there.
