Cuz's Corner Ep. 4 - The Mowglis

As spud says, these dudes are "the homies." For about a year, unbeknownst to the Mowglis and myself, we were neighbors. Like, I knew they were people, and I knew they lived down the block. I just didn't know that they were The Mowglis and they didn't know that I had a Jam Van.

They had a robot statue in their front yard made out of guitars and a small television. It was recently removed. Shame on the new tenant for that. When The Mowglis lived their they used to hang signs from a tree branch that jutted out onto Broadway Ave. and alerted folks to their backyard performances. So I'd stumbled upon parties at their pad, unfortunately never caught any music. I did however know a chick that fell off of their porch at one of the shindigs. Maybe they saw her fall, I dunno, she claimed she snuck out of there real quick-like and wasn't seen. My dog, The RZA, played with their dog, Abby, in the street one day. He's white and fluffy, she's black and fluffy. On one of these fluff-head encounters guitarist Josh Hogan and I introduced ourselves. My take away from that meeting was that he was a nice dude, that's it, never occurred that we'd be seeing eachother again in a parking lot about a year later and he'd be with seven of his friends, and I'd be with a few of mine, and we'd hang out, and I'd finally get to hear them play their "love rock."

That's all to say that they are indeed the homies. They kicked it again with us at Bonnaroo, even filmed another Jam Van session in between beers. That's coming out tomorrow.  For now we have this memory from the Roxy, the first time they ever met Spud. He's now the hood's biggest Mowglis fan, and they're now touring the country relentlessly spreading the love. I just hope they still have time to make robot statues.

Cisco Adler Interview/Performs Tonight

In anticipation of his Saint Rocke performance tonight and release of his first solo record "Aloha" - we caught up with California native Cisco Adler about this beachy vibes, star studded career and what he does for Fourth of July....

SUPERGOOD: What are you most excited about at this point in your career?
CISCO:  After years of producing and working with all the amazing artists I have had
the pleasure of rocking with, it feels freeing to step out and make an album for myself.
I'm excited about the possibilities.

SUPERGOOD: What has been your biggest accomplishment?

CISCO:  Too many to list.  Every one is a stepping stone to the next.
I'm concentrating on what WILL be my biggest accomplishment.

SUPERGOOD:  Where are some of your favorite places to perform?  Have you played at Saint Rocke before?

CISCO:  Red Rocks was AMAZING!!! The Greek in Berkeley. But I also dig the White Rabbit in San Antonio. Its a dirty little rock club and the kids go bananas!  This will be my first time at Saint Rocke but I have heard amazing things!

SUPERGOOD: Anything special tonight's attendees should know about?

CISCO:  First ten people in line get Bananabeat Snapbacks!  (get your tickets here)

SUPERGOOD: What did you do for the 4th?  Do you have a tradition?  What is your best fourth of july memory?

CISCO:   Got drunk.  Got stoned.  Ate well. Watched Fireworks.
Made love. Slept amazing!  That's my tradition every year.

SUPERGOOD: If there is one thing you've learned from being an artist - what is it?

CISCO:  Listen to your soul, not the voices in the background or the ones in your head.
Truth always wins and the blues never lose!

SUPERGOOD:  What artists are you most into right now?  DO you have a favorite song at the moment?

CISCO:  I love Mod Sun. i just produced his EP Happy As Fuck and he is on Warped (with Kosha Dillz, Machine Gun Kelly, Dead Sara and more) all summer.

He is the happiest dude on earth and an amazing rapper that will open peoples minds to
a new way to look at rap music. Pushing things forward.

SUPERGOOD:  Anything planned for the rest of 2012 that you want your fans to know about?

CISCO:  Fall tour. Get the EP

New Obsession - The Neighbourhood

Earlier this year, Pigeons & Planes, turned us onto a California groomed rock collective - The Neighbourhood - with the debut of a track titled "Female Robbery" and earlier this week they again delivered another treat from the group. This time "Sweater Weather" with a hook that proclaims you could hold hands through "the holes of my sweater."

Its catchy and nostalgic, been getting love from BBC's Zane Lowe and the video premiered on NME yesterday....plus the song charted to #1 on hypem.com. I'd say its been a pretty good stretch for the people in The Neighbourhood. Congratulations Jesse Rutherford and friends.

Pacific Festival Post Fact - Part 2 (recap by ZSE)

Part 1 of my Pacific Festival review
consisted of acts that performed during the day. Part 2 below consists of acts that performed at night.

After Calvin Harris got the party starting on the main stage, Steve Aoki continued the party with his bangers ranging from "Turbulence" to his stellar remix of "Pursuit of Happiness." He had by far the greatest stage presence. Here's my favorite song he did, his remix to Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness".

Pursuit of Happiness (Steve Aoki Remix)

After seeing Aoki, I scrambled over to see Aussie house duo Bag Raiders. They were one of the up-and-coming acts I was most excited to see. What I didn't expect was that their sound would be so exceptional, not only with the instrumentals but the vocals as well. "Way Back Home" appeared to pump the crowd up the most as the duo both were banging on drums and the catchy chorus was hot and dope!

Bag Raiders - Way Back Home

After Bag Raiders, we went back to the main stage to see Ghostland Observatory. If you're looking for a group that not only sounds good but has amazing visual effects as well, look no further than Ghostland Observatory. While I don't remember all the songs they performed, I won't forget the amazing light show and lasers during their performance, which made their set pretty much amazing. Here's my favorite song I heard from them live, "Midnight Voyage".

Midnight Voyage - Ghostland Observatory

Ghostland was a great pick me up act for west coast hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg. Even though we had to wait over 30 minutes for Snoop to get on stage, his performance was off the chain. Seriously Snoop Dogg is a legend and if you're a fan of hip-hop, you must respect Snoop's music, his swagger and his status. He played mostly his older tracks, which I personally loved and while there was a couple older tracks he didn't play ("Deep Cover" and "Gz and Hustlers"), he still was great. Here's video we got of his performance:

Lastly Australian act Cut Copy came to the stage as headliners of the festival. I was surprised as anybody why Snoop Dogg wasn't the closer, but after seeing Cut Copy jam out with the energy they had, I left with a great appreciation for Pacific Festival and their scheduling. I enjoyed almost every song Cut Copy did and really absorbed the energy from lead vocalist Dan Whitford. Here's my favorite song from Cut Copy, "Take Me Over", just a great song for a road trip or any other adventure you embark on.

Rusko at Wiltern & "Everday"

Rusko is throwing his womp down at The Wiltern on Saturday night with Destructo.

He also just dropped this dope video for "Everyday" that was shot in the California desert by the Salton Sea.

Midnight Juggernauts in Town for 2 Nights!

The fun party that is Midnight Juggernauts swings into town tonight at Echoplex and tomorrow at Cinespace (for Dimmak Tuesdays). You may recall some of their anthems from the 2008 album Dystopia, like "Shadows" which you've heard often and just didn't know the title of. Check out the video here.

But, their tour is truly in support of their soon to be released follow up Crystal Axis. Their 2 LA plays to kick off this week are their last stops stateside before they head back home to Australia for a series of August shows. Don't miss your last chance to potentially get dirty with the Juggernauts in California in 2010!

Weekend of Music Took Its Toll

So - thank goodness it is sort of a holiday today - because we still need an extra day to recover from the amazing weekend that was.

It all started with catching Eyedea & Abilities late set at Echoplex on Thursday. The 200-300 people who remained were hype on Rhymesayers but admittedly a little thin on their knowledge of Eyedea's lyrics. With one of the most potent arsenals of verbal weaponry you could possibly conceive of, Eyedea's performance lacked a little spunk because Eyedea had less verbal crowd energy to feed off of.

Nonetheless, the MC delivered a somewhat inspired performance. Likewise, the jamband STS9, took stage at The Wiltern on Friday as part of their national tour. The show was pretty crowded and the band delivered a cohesive set of music. But, it unfortunately was minimal on the heavy rhythm jungle jamming and lacked the songs that have become my live favorites. (At the least, the debut of their new hat by the rising underground clothing company Grassroots California was a huge hit!)

These touring veterans, Eyedea & STS9, just did not hold a candle to the rising acts we saw for the rest of the weekend....

Performing as part of the STS9 after party series, Big Gigantic and Elliott Lipp absolutely wrecked The Roxy late night Friday. Although the show was not completely sold out, the energy felt as if it was.

Big Gigantic really turned our head. It was the first time we'd seen this group and we'll expect big things from them in the future, gigantic things perhaps. Their sax fueled dub party was intoxicating and kept the crowd moving (as seen above). Some of their music is available for download for free and the group is hopefully taking the festival circuit by storm this summer with a scheduled performance at Wakarusa already.

Elliott Lipp (seen in the Grassroots California Bakers hat above) was also providing the fuel for the party as he closed out the late night jam on his computer. Even as the clock approached the 4 am curfew, the crowd was clamoring for more.

We had so much fun, we raced back to The Roxy the next night hoping it would somehow be Groundhogs Day. It wasn't - but we got a pleasant surprise because it was Zombie Prom! Saint Motel played host at the sold out 2nd Annual Zombie Prom extravaganza. With a featured zombie photo booth, bloodied and batty drunk fans and love from the crowd that was only exacerbated by Valentines Day - Saint Motel delivered a totally inspired performance (AJ featured singing below).

With a handful of sold out and absolutely spectacular shows in Los Angeles under their belt - we at SUPERGOODMUSIC sort of think that Saint Motel will be one of the explosions from the LA scene in 2010 that ends up on the national radar. Let your friends at SXSW know that they need to go see this indie rock quartet.
