Hoodie Allen - "The Chase Is On"

Its really nice to see the wealth of catchy hip-hop music being dumped on our ears this summer. With "Otis" being released recently it feels like there is about to be a return to classic sampling and less than wack commercial hip-hop. One of the up and comers we like is Hoodie Allen. Check out his latest "The Chase Is On" ....

Chris Webby at Key Club (Review)

This is my first post on SUPERGOODMUSIC, so thought I would let you know a little about what I enjoy about attending music shows - I love when I see people moving around, specifically if they are waving their arms in the air, dancing or just singing along.

I have always had mixed feelings with Chris Webby, consistently going back and forth with following him on twitter. However seeing him live at The Key Club on Wednedsay, my feelings sort of stayed the same. I hate to like the kid, but he's a good rapper.

At times being among the all ages crowd made me feel like I was seeing Chris "Baby" instead of Webby but the kid can hold his own with catchy songs like "I Need A Dollar" and "La La La". However he also lost interest in me and other fans when he played "ADD" and the songs that followed. His other highlights might have been the support he had on stage with R & B vocalist Miss Deja doing hooks on a couple tracks and DJ Semi opening/hyping Webby up with a quick 3-5 minute DJ set.

Overall Webby had real good stage presence, got the crowd engaged several times but also had some yawners during his hour long set. Yet, I found some new favorites after hearing him perform. So if I had to put a value on his performance, I would say it would be worth seeing Chris Webby for $15 or less. Here's three of my favorites Webby performed.

Mac Miller - I Need A Dollar ft. Mac Miller

Chris Webby - Get Down ft. OnCue

Chris Webby - La La La

Chicago Funk Fusion at The Mint

Continuing the trend of funk parading through The Mint during Jazzfest West, Sidewalk Chalk, a Chicago based group that fuses jazz, funk and hip-hop, hits their stage on Sunday night.

Lifting a page out of The Roots Organix and Do You Want More? handbooks, Sidewalk Chalk makes their best efforts to blend jazz informed bass and rhythms with a female vocalist and male MCs that guide you on a musical journey. Although not as tight as the Jimmy Fallon house band, Sidewalk Chalk is finding their way in a too infrequently explored musical space. Check out this video of them in the studio....

T. Mills - Ready and Fired in 2010, Exploding in 2011

Local resident Travis Tatum Mills may not yet be on your radar, but that will probably change soon. And he might already be if you've heard of the artist T. Mills. The 21 year old hip-hop-R&B-electropunk hybrid phenom is already a force on the internet and, after seeing one of his performances, I can attest that he is one on stage as well.

The Riverside, CA child sites influences from Wu Tang Clan to Blink 182 to Bone Thugs N Harmony - to recent additions to his playlist like Rusko and Wiz Khalifa. Embracing his multitude of tastes, T. Mills has already reached to a multitude of markets. In 2010, T. Mills could be seen all over the place - from his release of the "Ready, Fire, Aim!" EP to Bamboozle to the Warped Tour to his constantly growing online presence.

Earlier in 2011, I witnessed T. Mills headline and sell out an all ages show at The Troubadour. Not only were teenage girls grabbing for the pierced young hearthtrob's crotch on stage, they lined up to the edge of Doheny and Santa Monica at the end of the show screaming for a photo opportunity. Mind you, they'd been invited by the artist to do so after the show. He took the time to embrace each one of his fans willing to wait in the line while their parents waited outside to pick them up...

With plans to release a mixtape in April featuring production from J Hawk, Matt Squire, Colin Munroe, Hit Boy, The Stereotypes and more - T. Mills won't be resting anytime soon. Plus, with over 46,000 Facebook likers, where he happens to be giving away a free mp3 - http://www.facebook.com/ilovetmills?sk=app_4949752878 - almost 22,000 twitter followers http://twitter.com/#!/search/%40ilovetmills and over a million views on MySpace - his identity is going to keep penetrating the internet. With a swagger lick a rockstar for and songs like "Just My Luck" coming too - his hybrid-pop sounds will probably begin and keep penetrating your head too...

#Imjustsaying - Dog Shit is that New Shit

I have no idea who Courcy Magnus is - but I dig this simple video and the beat that has some dubstep like bass in it. Video is very lo-fi, which draws your attention back to the beat and the song. To fit the dirty topic - they went with a slightly dirrrrrty beat and BOOM - Dog Shit is my new shit. Is it yours?

Machine Gun Kelly AKA MGK - "Cleveland"

Machine Gun Kelly comes to us straight out of Cleveland, coincidentally the name of the aptly titled song "Cleveland"

MGK represents C-Town and Big Ohio quite well - paying particular homage to Shaker Heights, the high school he went to I presume. The same high school that spawned Kid Cudi and me, Boom D.

Houston born Colson Baker, better known as MGK or Machine Gun Kelly, feels home in the city on Lake Erie as displayed in his expletive laden, reference heavy video. While I don't expect him to be repping any other sect like that, I do expect to see more heat and bad ass raps from this rising midwestern MC in 2011.

K. Flay at Troubadour Tonight w/ wallpaper, The Dance Party & More

Stanford graduate and hipster hip-hopstress K. Flay makes her way into Los Angeles this evening, where she performs with wallpaper., The Dance Party (Hell Ya!) and Dude Royal.

Born in IlliNOISE - K. Flay began making music in her dorm room shortly after heading West. Now, with a lot of industry heat around the quite talented female artists, she's making music everywhere - from studios to apartments to the front seat of her car (wonder if she was making music with Amp on her car on the day of this photograph?).

You can peep some of her tracks through RCRDLBL.com or click this link - K.Flay - 2 Weak

K. Flay takes stage at 9:30 and may just steal the thunder of fellow rappers Dude Royal and wallpaper. Flay will be at home with Bay Area electro-hip-hop funkster wallpaper - whose live show is definitely worthy of anyone's attention. Wallpaper's received some good nods for recent live remix work of Passion Pit and Das Racist - and who knows what he will pull out tonight.

Dude Royal is an L.A. native also worth your time. If you heard the radio friendly "Love High" last year - you might already be on top of this show and be aware that he is not merely a rapper, but also a singer. If you didn't - check it out and check out the show tonight if you can!

Also on the line-up are The Dance Party, whose debut record was released on Hell Ya in late 2010. Despite not fitting all that well with this line up (why have The Dance Party with rising hip-hop artists?), The Dance Party will certainly be giving lessons in their expertise areas - Dancing and Partying.

If you want to have a good time, get your dance on and Party - go to Troubadour tonight!

Indie Rock & Rap Mix at Echoplex

I'm definitely going to have to check out the Black Crystal Wolf Kids simply because they sound like they are fun and judging from youtube, are clearly a cover band of the latest indie songs of yesteryear.

Doing their best attempt at Black Keys "Tighten Up" while performing as an opener for Busdriver at Echoplex last Thursday - the Kids get a dosage of hip-hop flavor from Culver City's Verbs and New Jersey's Kosha Dillz.

KOSHA DILLZ and his "L.A. Ish" on SUNSET

Its no mystery that I'm a fan of Kosha Dillz - he is a white, jewish MC that can spit. He is like everything I wanted to be when I was 13 years old but never became (my rap career ended with a brief stint as an MC in the group Dopamine n' Potassium; we only performed in Ann Arbor, MI).

You can see the better of the two of us take the stage at Key Club tonight (buy tickets here). Kosha, from New Jersey, will be headlining the Sean Healy Presents night at the Sunset venue - showcasing his east coast talents amongst a plethora of West coast emcees, including Foci.

If you're a fan of real hip-hop - a Kosha Dillz performance is where you should be. He is quintessential real hip-hop - multiple incarcerations, war stories, trials and tribulations and persevering through it all because he was hungry to rap and had to rap because he was hungry. Now, he's not going hungry being a rapper - but his star is still rising and he is the sort of tenured rapper still looking for their big break.

With a character in NBA 2K11, a Yacht vs. Kosha Dillz mixtape, Freestyle vs. Written with C-Rayz Walz, and the Beverly Dillz full length album, produced by Belief, that spawned at least 2 MTV music videos - Kosha Dillz pot is damn near ready to boil over with blow up potential. It doesn't hurt that he's out here shooting scenes for his music video "L.A. Ish" - the third potential MTV video from Dillz, as well as working on tracks and other content for his forthcoming full length tentatively titled "Garage Sale."

Come to the Key Club and help fuel this jewish pickle's artistry - you may even end up in that content or "L.A. Ish" - depending on how you act. I want to make a cameo in it, so you'll find me there. If you buy a ticket and come give a SUPERGOOD shout out when you're there - I'll do my best to make sure you're in some footage too.

Movin' Like Berney

This song certainly would have been beating out the subwoofers in my trunk in high school, but now it just makes my computer shake, inviting my girlfriend and clients to wobble walk in the SUPERGOODMUSIC office. When was the last time you moved like Bernie?

Behind The Lyrics - Toot It & Boot It by YG

The frequently quoted radio hit "Toot It and Boot It" has been around for quite some time now - long enough to elevate it into the realm of hit hip-hop song, and long enough to warrant a closer look at what the song is really talking about.

Like many chart toppers, the song popularized a catchphrase - this one "toot it and boot it" which DOES NOT mean farted and vomited. Those down with street culture know the reference and probably understand the song - but not everyone is so I'm here to break down the song for you...

The easy going hipster-hop anthem tells a tale of a man meeting a woman on the first night, taking her home for intercourse and asking her to leave afterward.

The song introduces the protagonist, presumably YG, in the opening chorus. He is at the club trying to meet women. After successfully meeting said woman, he convinces her to go to his abode ("crib") by saying hello ("wassup"). Rather than leave something to the imagination, the protagonist confidently lets us know that he successfully got laid ("know I fucked" or, for the radio version, "know I f...d"). After fornicating or "toot(ing) it" the protagonist than kicks the female out or "boot(s) it."

If you were wondering how the story man conquered the booty, YG quickly tell us in the first verse that it was because the female found him attractive and desired to copulate. Our confident protagonist believes he is superior, but is nonetheless willing to engage in sexual relations with this woman. After the female expresses her desire to have the protagonist engage in intercourse with her, he accepts the invitation by giving the female permission to "run it."

YG reminds his audience that he is able to get women easily ("yo I'm a pimp bitch straight game never no sipping"). He also illustrates the size of his genitals through verbal imagery and recollections of the female having difficulty walking post coitus ("and after we did it she was walking with a limp.") Apparently he wants us to know that the intercourse was unprotected and that he is ready for another woman as well. ("bust it open, leave it wet, you know i leave it soakin'/who next I don't ever close, I stay open")

After again reminding listeners of the circumstances under which he met the female, YG opines that the promiscuous female fell in love with him and felt stupid when he asked her to leave his house once the sex was over. It is clear at this point that the protagonist likes to kick women out of his home after intercourse.

In the second verse, our protagonist presumably speaks to a new female having booted the previous one. He advances requests to have sex and tells the potential female mate that she should acquiesce to his requests to have sex with her and make her leave afterward. He tells her she should do this because of his status that she is aware of. He insists she knows where she can find him in the aforementioned club.

The protagonist expresses his delight at the potential female finding him attractive and contemplating their future sexual intercourse. This female has invited several of her friends to join the protagonist's entourage. Once both parties exit the establishment, this new female proceeds to engage in sex, apparently in the position of doggy style. The female involved makes her buttocks cheeks clap together. She and YG engage in intercourse multiple times. But, "only for one night" and then she's "gotta go."

The chorus resumes followed by a short banter third verse that reminds us that the protagonist's female sexual partner(s) had sex with him and was(were) forced to leave his house which resulted in her(their) feeling stupid.

YG performs at Key Club this Wednesday, October 20th. E-mail contest@supergoodmusic.com with subject heading "Behind The Lyrics" for a shot at winning a pair of tickets.

Meet Signal Path (Playing The Roxy Saturday 9/25)

Over at SUPERGOODMUSIC, we are stoked to have the stellar line-up of Blockhead, Signal Path and Nocando coming to town next weekend. After listening to Signal Path's recently released (AND FREE) album, Imaginary Lines (which you can play at the bottom of this post) we reached out to the artists to learn more and get amped for the upcoming show.

Not only did we discover that Signal Path's Damon Metzner is a cool mo-fo who formerly lived in Michigan, we found out he trained under Galactic's Stanton Moore too!!! Imaginary Lines had me sold on attending The Roxy initially, but armed with the knowledge that Damon is a funk master's disciple, I definitely won't miss a minute next Saturday!

Below is our full interview with Damon from just before he hit the road to tour (first show was last night Seattle), along with a stream of the album. ENJOY :D

SUPERGOODMUSIC: Where did you grow up?

Damon: I grew up in the great city of New Orleans, with a little bit of time in America's High Five: Michigan!

SUPERGOODMUSIC: How did you decide to chase a career in music? When did you give up the typical "day" job?

Damon: I've been bouncing between being a performer and working the music industry side of things since I was 17. The last job outside of either the music industry or performing was at a pizza shop in New Orleans when I was 16.

SUPERGOODMUSIC: Did you go to school for music or take any music lessons growing up?

Damon: I did both. I started out taking lessons with the great teacher Mark DiFlorio in New Orleans who then introduced me to Stanton Moore. Stanton was a gigantic inspiration in my playing and having him take the time to show me a few things was a huge motivator to say the least. I then went on to major in jazz at The University of New Orleans before changing my major to business at The University of Montana.

SUPERGOODMUSIC: Where did the name Signal Path come from?

Damon: Ryan Burnett (guitar production) came up with the name in 2000. It makes sense for an electronic act, no? Haha.

SUPERGOODMUSIC: What is Signal Path all about?

Damon: Signal Path is a musical project created by Ryan Burnett (guitar/production) and myself, Damon Metzner (drums). We try to incorporate deep melodic ideas that wrap around compositionally focused core of intricate rhythm and massive low end. Both Ryan and I draw a lot of influence from american roots music, and try to incorporate those influences with our electronic production. Rhythmically, we definitely identify with a lot of glitch, hip hop and big beat music, but intertwine acoustic instrumentation as well. We regularly incorporate acoustic guitars, mandolins and lapsteel guitars that weave inside synths, massive leads and heavy basslines. Our goal is to produce deeply meaningful unique music that can be both beautiful and intense live.

SUPERGOODMUSIC: What's brewing at the moment?

Damon: Right now we are 100% focused on the recent drop of our free album Imaginary Lines, that came out on September 1st. Getting ready for one of the most exciting headlining tours in our history too. We couldn't be more thrilled to share the stage with some of our favorite artists in the nation including Blockhead, Bluetech, Designer Drugs, EPROM and EOTO. Having the opportunity to perform with artists of this caliber is a HUGE inspiration.

SUPERGOODMUSIC: What makes this tour that you're embarking on different from all your previous ones?

Damon: This tour really stands apart as it's giving us the opportunity to perform music from an album that we spent more time on than any other release. This tour also is allowing us to work with some of our favorite producers in the country.

SUPERGOODMUSIC: When will you be playing LA?

Damon: Saturday September 25th. At The Roxy. We're giving you a pair of tickets to give away. (tweet and mention @supergoodmusic @signalpath & @theroxy for chance to win or e-mail contest@supergoodmusic.com with the Subject: Signal Path)

SUPERGOODMUSIC: When was the last time you played LA? Where? How was it?

Damon: We haven't played in LA since 2007 when we did a run with the Pnuma Trio. We played a place called Fais Do Do. It was a great time for sure. LA throws down.

SUPERGOODMUSIC: Where have you stayed in LA when you've come? Do you have a favorite place? Do you have a favorite spot to hit up to eat?

Damon: Hahahaha - Well, we pretty much always stay at some seedy motel....this one time, naw, forget it.

SUPERGOODMUSIC: Have you had In n Out? Is it the best fast food burger there is?

Damon: I have had In n Out...and although a fantastic burger, I have to say that the Burgerville's in Portland, OR takes the cake for the organic(ish) fastfood chains...I hope I get some free burgers out of this!

SUPERGOODMUSIC: I hope I do too. So, what's next?

Damon: We're focused on making the next several months some of the most positive in the history of the band. We couldn't be more proud of the music we've put out on the new album. We just really can't wait to get on the road and share the music with the fans live. Ultimately, none of this would be possible without their support.

SUPERGOODMUSIC: Anything else you want to let the SUPERGOODMUSIC community know?

Damon: We just really want to thank all the fans. Like I said, NONE of this could happen without them which is one of the reasons why we give the music away for free. Of course we'd like to give props to www.supergoodmusic.com for the opportunity to share these thoughts and help spread the word. We'd also really love to thank all the artists we're fortunate enough to work with including the amazing visual artist Josh Keyes who donated a fantastic piece of art for our use as our album cover.

1st Coachella Performance We're Checking Out Is....WALE

Since checking out the schedule, we've had to make some hard decisions on who we're going to see, who we're not going to see and when we're going to attend some of the amazing satellite parties we've been hearing about.

One thing is certain though, I'm trying to make Wale my first performance of Coachella 2010. The rising MC, managed by Elitaste, is performing from 2:35 - 3:25 on the Coachella stage, so you'll hear him when you are walking in the festival grounds. He first popped on my radar at the 2007 MTV I've been a fan since before "Nike Boots," and I imagine if you read this blog, you've at least heard of the rapper born Olubowale Victor Akintimehin. If you haven't heard about Wale, you probably don't listen to radio, have been absent from the music blogosphere and/or have no love for hip-hop. If you haven't heard of him - but want to check out a little more about him and hear one of his songs - go to this blog/site - http://mixtapemaestro.net/2010/04/wale-breakup-song.html

The Interscope signed artist released his debut album, Attention Deficit, in November 2009 which featured a few dope singles, including Chillin' (featuring Lady Gaga) that made its way onto a few SUPERGOODMUSIC mixes and World Tour (featuring Jamie Sullivan) which is on our April Showers Bring Coachella Flowers mix.

He has the lyrics, the beats and the charisma to be a hip-hop staple for a while, so don't sleep on this opportunity to see him while he is still a rising star...
