Get To Hilltop Hoods Early for Kenan Bell!

Are you hip to Kenan Bell? Maybe you should be if you're a Los Angeleno. He's hometown talent that's made various splashes over the last several years, including "Like This" - which was on the NBA 2K10 soundtrack and reminds me a bit of Childish Gambino.

Kenan's lyrics are often playful, embedded with imagery and informed by the experience of being a 6'5" black male raised in "lily-white Los Angeles suburbs challenging stereotypes." Sounds like a person I'd want to meet - let alone hear rap. You can do both tonight at The Satellite when he opens for Hilltop Hoods.

Bonnaroo Announcement Courtesy of ESPN's John Anderson

With festival announcements, line-ups and promo getting cooler and quirkier every year - Bonnaroo made sure that they continue to set the standard by recruiting ESPN anchor John Anderson to assist on their announcement.

Relishing in former non-existent band glory, Anderson delivers a few funny words before the video goes all synthed out and cartoony with the list of artists performing at Bonnaroo 2012. Hard to imagine them topping their 10th anniversary line-up - but they may have done it with this one!

Bonfire Video - Chris Gambino

MTV premiered this wicked ghostly video from Childish Gambino. Other rappers should be scared of his forthcoming release on Glassnote, because it is probably going to be spooky spectacular. Anyhow, he drops this - and we share it for your Halloween enjoyment.

If you're in L.A. and want to ensure a Happy Halloween, come out to Bootleg Theater for Mind The Gap's last residency show of the month, with Weapons of Audio and indie rock cover band - Black Crystal Wolf Kids. It should also be wicked (in a good way) - and its FREE. Plus, I'm gonna give away some candy there - so it will be sweet too!

They Are The Legendary Roots Crew...

Saturday night's Roots concert at House of Blues was exactly what I needed - a smack in the face from a veteran band.

While festival season brought out many great acts, including The Roots themselves, I felt it rarely elicited straight magic from those veteran touring artists when they hit the massive stage. The metaphorical torch of rocking the crowd felt like it had been passed to the groundswell of rising talent that go bananas when they see capacities they previously thought unattainable - the way Childish Gambino did at Bonnaroo or The Stone Foxes did at Outside Lands Festival. Well, this Saturday, The Roots reclaimed the throne as the best live show in town...any town.

The fearsome Fallon house band executed Roots classics, a few new joints and a healthy mix of covers to an over capacity crowd at the Sunset Strip's The House of Blues. Entering around 9:45, I caught a handful of tracks off of "How I Got Over" - including the end of the title track and "Fire" (normally accompanied by John Legend) on ground level where you could barely find place to stand. Apparently I missed Thought @ Work - but Thought's buttery poetic verses over the new material clearly announced he was on his illa-fifth adrenaline.

If there was any question whether they were ready - their drop of the now infamous "Hear I Come" let you know America's favorite house band from Philly via NYC had indeed come. The eruption from the floor (and the sheer volume of people) resulted in my retreat to the balcony - which proved brilliant. The view from up top showcased a crowd packed so close it was like they were trying to get a better smell of the Roots' sweat.

Focusing on a lot of Things Fall Apart and Do You Want More?!? material for a good section of the show - from sexy bass on The Next Movement and beautiful melodies on Step Into The Realm and You Got Me to the always smooth Proceed and an amaze-balls version of Mellow My Man - it felt like it was a Roots show from a decade earlier. The bass was often so in the pocket, if you shut your eyes, you may have even thought that Hubbard was still slapping licks....except that Tuba Gooding Jr. wasn't in the band back then and his bass drone was an undeniable highlight.

Doing 360 degree rotations and two stepping all over stage, Tuba really rocked the crowd with showmanship. Him and Captain Kirk Douglas traded stage theatrics to really entertain the packed house (as well as themselves).

They may have been the most emphatic performers on stage - although they got a challenge from Childish Gambino who made a surprise appearance during an interlude after the Mellow My Man jam. Gambino played three songs with his own band, which, at times, included ?uestlove on percussion. He came out to 'Freaks and Geeks' - one of his most bragadocious but nonetheless dope releases, but he closed with "Bonfire" the overnight heater that had seen its real introduction at a Paris show and on Hot 97 just earlier that week. The actor better known as Donald Glover certainly made the most of his appearance only raising my expectations for his next show and his hopefully coming soon album on Glassnote.

Gambino quickly relented the mic to the master, Mr. Trotter, or Black Thought, who shortly after the interlude orchestrated a series of amazing rock covers - from "Sweet Child O Mine" to Gil Scott Heron's "The Bottle." The Roots continued their stage show - with Kamaal, James Poyser and the new bassist all joining the choreographed dances - and by shows end - even Frankie Knuckles was in the dancing mix.

Myself nor the rest of the crowd wanted the show to to be over. Attendees endured to the bitter end and then hung around stage hoping to get just a second more and then to get whatever drum sticks or other items The Roots were willing to hand out (?uestlove gave away the head on one of his drums). Some even retreated to The Foundation Room where Poyser, Knuckles, Tuba Gooding Jr. and Gambino could all be found mingling with concert goers. Everyone left satisfied because it was easily the best concert House of Blues has hosted all year...

Before It Wears Off…Bonnaroo Day 1

Its early on Sunday, the final day of Bonnaroo X, which has really taken the cake for best outdoor music festival in the United States in 2011 so far, and quite frankly, I don’t think it will be topped this year.

Music is already being played (I’m pretty sure its Widespread Panic’s soundcheck) and the empty fields strewn with debris tell a tale of an amazing night before. Before visiting Day 3, or Day 2 for that matter – lets return to how it all began.

The first day of Bonnaroo X was a smashing success by all of my standards. From top to bottom efficiency and offerings were improved over last year and my SUPERGOOD experience begin as it should, in super good fashion.

Traveling via red-eye to Nashville – I ended up hitching a ride with two ‘Roo rookies who were looking for some people to fill their car. It just so happened my driver was a former contestant and winner on Who Wants To B e A Millionaire? Great conversation on our journey to Walmart, Alco÷hol purveying establishments and gas stations ensued. It culminated with a departure at the Holiday Inn, where I picked up my press pass and joined a mash up crew of videographers, photographers and festival volunteers.

The first beer was cracked around 2:30 p.m. The delicious Fat Tire dripped down my throat as the beads of sweat forming on brow puddled on my glasses. The future, as the sun, were both very bright at the moment. Little did I know my supplied tent was not such a simple set up.

Rocking a tent that’s older than I am….which I think qualifies as vintage – myself and friends erected a structure that might collapse if you took a leaf blower to it. My sleeptime sweatbox was nonetheless standing and it was time to celebrate. Beer 2. Tecate.

Encouraged by campmates – I left to go to see Hayes Carll at The Other Tent. After getting turned around, I ended at Futurebirds. Not bad. Not incredible. It didn’t really grip me too much. What did grip me was the microbrew beer tent featuring over 20 microbrews. Totally up my alley. Totally supergood and just in time for Beer 3. Sweetwater 420.

After getting a little more hydrated and getting my bearings again between That, This, The Other and wherever else an active stage was, I finally found Hayes Carll. After indulging a song or two at That Tent – I set out to check out River City Extension.

Drawn in by a song sounding curiously like early Rusted Root, I entered the periphery of This Tent for RCE to avoid what appeared to be some looming ominous weather. Gusts of wind and overcast clouds were the pretext to a curtain of darkness appearing off to the west. Thankfully, that was all avoided.

I paraded to Freelance Whales who wove through some indie rock that, like many bands these days, appeared to melt a variety of styles. I was impressed enough to stick around for brew 4 (Coors Light) and to note that I’d make sure to circle back to this band down the road. I advise you do the same.

School of Seven Bells performed after them, and that was my cue to leave. Despite their success in 2010, I’m simply not a fan. Rather than be a detractor, I set out to see an act I’d seen before and liked – The Knux.

The Knux certainly brought the party – from “Cappuccino” to “Bang Bang” they performed their hottest tracks from their initial release Remind Me in 3 Days… and then stuck in a few from their forthcoming follow up, including the debut of some material and their lead single “She’s So Up.”

Needing a breather from the heat and the crowd, and wanting to return to the campsite, I unfortunately missed most of Band of Skulls and J. Cole, both of whom I heard had spectacular performances. But, the temporary time out was necessary to catch my breath for the acts high on SUPERGOOD’s watch list – Twin Shadow and Childish Gambino.

Playing back to back in This Tent – the two up and coming solo artist spearheaded bands performed beautiful sets respectively. Twin Shadow chartered new territory in the indie rock arena, while Childish Gambino exemplified why an actor turned rapper is something to keep on the look out for. Crushing cuts from mixtapes, as well as cult hits like “Lights Turned On” “Bitch Look at Me Now” and “Freaks and Geeks.” Backed by a full band that featured a talented violinist, Donald Glover sang, rapped and performed for a crowd that was apparently his largest audience ever. His enthusiasm and excitement were repeatedly acknowledged by his admissions of how “fucking great” Bonnaroo is.

I could’ve easily retired on the strength of Gambino. Nothing was going to top his energy – but the drone of Beats Antique’s drums sucked me in and a gravitational force pulled me to The Other Tent. Their grimy jungle beat jams kept me moving for a few songs – but exhaustion ultimately won out and Day 1 of Bonnaroo was done.

Apologies for the absence of pictures, but I promise they’ll be up next week. There are lots of press competing for internet bandwidth here and, in the interest of community and time efficiency – I’m not uploading and posting pics/videos until I get back to civilization.
