New Hipster Music Exposure Vehicle: HBO's GIRLS

The increasingly funny and clever HBO show GIRLS isn't just good for visual entertainment and humor - its proving to be a pretty good vehicle for exposure to new indie music.  Take The Echo Friendly for instance.  Had you heard of them?  Or there "Same Mistakes"?  We admittedly had not.

I'm not boasting that "Same Mistakes" is infectious.  Its not.  But its good.  A solid time piece that makes a point and captures that post-college or post-grad school early adult crisis angst in a lo-fi indie rock pocket.  All the more reason why it was a perfect song to use on Girls.   The track resonates because we all feel or have felt that angst (or for our younger readers - will feel it sometime in the future) and despite trying to sort it all out - we still end up repeating bad behavior and/or making the same mistakes.  Its a cycle.  Sometimes a vicious one...but one that at least gets young artists to make palatable music.

The Echo Friendly's video is lo-fi, with some cool effects.  Nothing visually outrageous to melt your face, but it compliments the music well.  Enjoy....

New Obsession - The Neighbourhood

Earlier this year, Pigeons & Planes, turned us onto a California groomed rock collective - The Neighbourhood - with the debut of a track titled "Female Robbery" and earlier this week they again delivered another treat from the group. This time "Sweater Weather" with a hook that proclaims you could hold hands through "the holes of my sweater."

Its catchy and nostalgic, been getting love from BBC's Zane Lowe and the video premiered on NME yesterday....plus the song charted to #1 on hypem.com. I'd say its been a pretty good stretch for the people in The Neighbourhood. Congratulations Jesse Rutherford and friends.

Miike Snow New Video for "The Wave"/ Physical Record Out In 1 Week

Miike Snow's highly anticipated sophomore album, Happy To You, sees its physical release on March 27, 2012 - although you can already acquire the record digitally.

To promote their effort, the act teamed up to make a series of music videos with Swedish director Andreas Nillson - who has worked with MGMT, Fever Ray and others. The video series revolves around a character Jean Noel - a manufactured proto-human that is supposed to be perfect. This new video for "The Wave" takes off where "Paddling Out" ended - when Jean crashed a spaceship into a planet looking like Earth. Check it out....

Final Night of SXSW/Check Out Grape Vinyl

SXSW 2012 was amazing and exhausting. #BandPageHQ hosted by SUPERGOODMUSIC (@supergoodmusic), Heard Entertainment (heardent) and of course Bandpage (@bandpage) really rocked out - especially on its last night with The Service Company, Warp Records and Brainfeeder.

At the end of it all, SUPERGOODMUSIC founder Brandon Dorsky took a flight back from San Antonio to LA via Southwest. In a serendipitous turn of events, Kunal Anand - the creator of Grape Vinyl, one of the more awesome video blogs out there these days, sat down in the middle seat next to him and a friendship was born.

If you didn't know about Grape Vinyl - its delivering new music video nuggets on a regular basis. This is a blog that is doing it right and looks good too. It even led me to stuff I should have already discovered myself - like this trippy cartoony Neon Indian "Fallout" video released in early February.

How I missed it - I don't know. But Grape Vinyl didn't - and that's the point. I respect this blog and this blogger. Check out the video blog here and follow Kunal.

Jungle Fever? - Gucci Mane's "I'm In Love With A White Girl"

Gucci Mane just released the video for his soon to be club anthem - "I'm In Love With A White Girl." Its not that this track is anything epic, its not, but with a hook like that - I'd put my chips on white girls wanting to sing along and demanding the track from their local DJ. The catch phrase "once you go black, you'll never go back" clearly doesn't apply here as Gucci and Yo Gotti relish in their love for Caucasian race.

Assisted by scantily clad females, some white girls with serious booty and some clever white girl glasses - its quasi-entertaining standard hip-hop fare.

Miike Snow - "Paddling Out" Video

Something about Miike Snow's music just grips me every time. I'm oozing with anticipation for their record, excited to catch them at Coachella and just hoping I'll be able to see them wherever they're playing in Austin during SXSW.

"Paddling Out" is hopefully a great window into what their new record will sound like - cause it just means they'll be continuing their trend of kick-ass left of center melodically sound quasi-dance floor bangers that are ripe for remixing and perfect to drive to. While this music video is positively weird and out of this world - the song isn't. Great structure with some sexy vocal cries in the hook. Enjoy...

Trippy Justice Video

The "ON'N'ON" video by Justice might scare you if you're on acid - or it might be the coolest thing ever. If you're sober - I suppose you could still have the same reaction. What do you think? Reminds me of Star Wars credits, The Never Ending Story and hallucinations. Plus, its got enough special effects that its not just your average music video.

Massive effects, skeletons, colors, explosions and, justifiably, the members of the duo make it entertaining.

Grammy's Best Video Category

Since when has the Grammy's had the best video category? I'm not even sure - but its an eclectic mix - Skrillex, Adele, Memory Tapes, Radiohead, OK Go and, yes, Weird "Al" Yankovic.

Do you have a front runner in this category? I'm not advocating making your computer a personal MTV circa 1988 - I've listened to the records more than I've watched any of these music videos - but in 30 minutes you can digest all the Grammy nominees, and, with the exception of Weird Al's parody of Gaga, the nominated videos are synch with quality material.

In some of the videos - there are lots of great special effects (OK Go, Skrillex, Memory Tapes), others have creative dance interpretations, broken dishes and synchronized glass ripples. Prepare to be entertained...

Skrillex - "First of the Year (Equinox)"

Adele - "Rolling In The Deep"

Radiohead - "Lotus Flower"

Memory Tapes - "Yes I Know"

Weird Al Yankovic - "Perform This Way"

OK Go - "All Is Not Lost"

Black Keys Debut New Dance with "Lonely Boy"

Black Keys dropped a little taste of their forthcoming record, "Lonely Boy." This low budget video is awesome mainly because the guy is killing it with the dance moves and the lip synching. Wonder if there is a Lonely Boy dance tutorial - because I want to learn it.

I also want to know where that office is? And who pokes their head in the window for a hot second?

Enjoy Black Keys latest....over and over and over.

Suitable for Children?

If you like risque and down right weird music videos - you may have already heard about Duck Sauce's latest "Big Bad Wolf." The piece is clearly designed to make a statement about sexuality as well as show A-Trak pissing out of his mouth.

If you don't believe me - watch for yourself. If you've got your kids around - you may want them to wear a blindfold...

Kids Love "Sweatpants"

It wasn't until I was in third grade that I departed from a daily routine of wearing sweatpants. Kosha Dillz latest music video, the second from his EP Gina & The Garage Sale, has me waxing nostalgic for the days when pants with buttons weren't even part of my wardrobe yet. The Jersey based MC most likely will be getting kids amped to rock sweatpants as a fashion statement today as he performs with Yo Gabba Gabba in New Brunswick, NJ at two shows this afternoon/evening.

What makes that so cool is, not only did he just drop the premier of his music video for "Sweatpants" on Consequence of Sound last night (see below), but rappers also are not the norm for the touring Yo Gabba Gabba show. With acts like Pretty Lights, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. and Leslie Hall normally joining the tour - it is refreshing to see an MC that is always on his grind get his due. Sharing a stage with Biz Markie, Brobee, Muno, Plex and DJ Lance will most likely be not only cool for him - but a career accomplishment.

In support of one of the hardest working MCs I know (and because it is my nephew's favorite song) - I give you "Sweatpants" music video and a link to purchase the song via i-tunes as well as the free download of the Yo Gabba Gabba remix.
