Tonight in L.A. (February 3, 2013)

Its Super Bowl Sunday - a #SUPERGOOD staff favorite because the jump off is proper.  Spreads are top notch, beer is flowing, unsanctioned gambling is rampant and couchgate playlists become subject matter for battle.

Unfortunately Super Bowl Sunday is a cultural event - and in doing so - it often takes away from the volume of performers hitting the cities' streets, venues and nightclubs and 2013 is no different.   Of the 60 + venues we ordinarily report on, only about 20% of them play host to a public live music offering.  That list is below.  Our recommendation - getting down with Dim Mak fam and the cool kids Thee Mike B, Fashen and DJ Metric at Drai's Hollywood.

  • Matt & Alber, Lou Jane, Steffaloo @ The Hotel Café
  • Acapella!, Street Corner Renaissance, Veritas, Voxel Rox @ WitZend
  • The Toledo Show @ Harvelle’s
  • House of Blues Gospel Brunch @ House of Blues – Sunset Strip
  • The Reflections, Tashaki Miyaki, Joel Jerome (of Dios), DJ Ana Calderon @ The Satellite (FREE)
  • The Bush Tetras, Terry Malts, Swahili Blonde @ The Echo
  • Thee Mike B, Fashen, DJ Metric @ Drai’s Hollywood
  • The Leeches, The Mormons, White Knight @ Alex’s Bar
  • Cro-Mags, Strife @ Constellation Room
  • Ascent, Capali Long, Phil DeSlott @ TRiP
  • Froth, Cab 20, The Short Eyes, Santoros @ The Smell
  • Stanley Jordan Trio @ Catalina Bar & Grill

Tonight in L.A. (December 9, 2012)

Complete your weekend with some hip-hop - the smokey heat of Curren$y at Key Club amongst cumulus clouds of chronic or the educated raps of Blue Scholars and The Physics at Troubadour.

For some electronic music consider checking out SMOG's Sunday event at Los Globos with Kemst, Hatcha, Djunya and Hogwash or try Drai's Hollywood for Dim Mak's Sunday party with Klever, Fashen and DJ Metric.

Tonight in L.A. (November 25, 2012)

Enjoy the end of your extended holiday weekend and family visits this Sunday, and if inclined - throw some music in too.  I don't have too many hot picks for you - but veteran soulman Trey Songz's intimate music will light up a crowd at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live while So-Cal based acts Fartbarf and The Dustbowl Revival respectively impress much smaller crowds.

Fartbarf takes to Alex's Bar with support from Mondo Moderna to deliver some quirky indie electronic dance music while up the coast in Venice Dustbowl Revival invades Del Monte Speakeasy for a night of tasty blues, New Orleans and roots infused rock.

A full list of tonight's shows is below:

Sunday Funday: The Do Over, Dub Frequency's Guess Event at Drai's and Miami Horror at Dim Mak Cannonball Sundays

Each year - I get uber excited to attend The Do Over - because it is hands down, the best music event in Los Angeles on most Sunday afternoons.   The tunes are always impressive - even though its often a mystery who will be performing - and the crowd 's always eclectic.

Today will be the first time I attend this season - because sadly, the SUPERGOODMUSIC train has not been able to make it yet in 2012.    BUT its a great day for boogying down in Hollyhood because on top of The Do Over, Treasure Fingers performs at Dub Frequency's Guess event at Drai's Hollywood from 12-6 too and then Miami Horror takes over for Dim Mak's Cannonball Sundays later that night.

You can RSVP for all the events - but arriving early is advised....which means, I got to stop typing and get in my ride.  DO OVER - here I come.

The Do Over happens every Sunday in Los Angeles in the summer from 2-10 PM at LURE (formerly Cabana Club) at 1439 Ivar Avenue.  RSVP at thedoover.net/la

Chicago Funk Fusion at The Mint

Continuing the trend of funk parading through The Mint during Jazzfest West, Sidewalk Chalk, a Chicago based group that fuses jazz, funk and hip-hop, hits their stage on Sunday night.

Lifting a page out of The Roots Organix and Do You Want More? handbooks, Sidewalk Chalk makes their best efforts to blend jazz informed bass and rhythms with a female vocalist and male MCs that guide you on a musical journey. Although not as tight as the Jimmy Fallon house band, Sidewalk Chalk is finding their way in a too infrequently explored musical space. Check out this video of them in the studio....

Watch The Grammys - its the Best Live Music in Town Tonight

We could advise you to go to various places in town tonight to catch the potential next big thing or just to hear a smooth crooner or some sexy guitar, however, we don't think that is where you'd witness the best and most supergood music there is to see on this last Sunday of January.

Actually, this is one of the few times we are going to advise you to stay home. Stay there and watch the Grammys. Maybe leave to go to Target to get yourself some 3D specs to enjoy the Michael Jackson tribute performance to the fullest, but maybe you saved yours from Avatar and are hoping those work.

If the Grammy's are too mainstream for you or you just want to DVR them for time porting so that you can skip commercials and enjoy a Sunday on the town, then here is who is playing and where they are playing:

Anderszewski Plays Beethoven (2PM), Los Angeles Master Chorale: Almost A Capella (7PM) @ Hollywood Bowl
Major Johnson-Finley (7PM), Katie Costello (8PM), Wesley Smith (9PM) @ Room 5
Live Footage with Knife and Fork, Tango Nuevo and Guests @ Echo Curio
Supernova.com Presents: Band Wars @ On The Rox
Part Time Punks Presents: Depeche Mode Night @ Echo
Neil Hamburger, JP Incorporated, Brendon Walsh @ Spaceland
387 Entertainment Presents @ The Mint
High Voltage Presents: Solo Clique, The Diamond Light, Girl Next Door @ The Viper Room
Makana, Jerry Joseph, Elina @ Saint Rocke
Marques Wyatt @ Vanguard
Michael Sheppard @ Staples Center
David Lindley @ The Roxy
Ivan and Alyosha, Brown Sugar Sinks, Greg Jong @ Bootleg
House of Blues Gospel Brunch @ House of Blues
