Tonight in L.A. (Saturday November 10, 2012)

Don't sleep on your local concert calendar tonight because there are quite a few gems in L.A.'s backyard.

Mumford & Sons makes a trip to Hollywood Bowl for the first of two shows that help close out the season.  They are joined by Dawes and I have no doubts it will be spectacular.  Go a little south on Cahuenga and then head over to Vine if you want the turn up to get real as Wolfgang Gartner, Proxy and Popseka keep Avalon's dance floor saturated and sweaty.  Marc Broussard & Friends also play in Hollywood at The Hotel Cafe; if you're into musicianship - stopping in would not be a bad decision.

Local acts join forces tonight to create some L.A. power bills - including Saint Motel and Leftover Cuties at Saint Rocke and Warner Drive and Love And A .38 at The Roxy.  We have one pair of tickets to give away for Saint Motel so tweet out @supergoodmusic @saintrocke and @saintmotel if interested or holler at us at contest@supergoodmusic.com.

Hit + Run celebrates 7 years of t-shirt printing and parties at The Echoplex and Funky Sole gets a special visit from DJ Spinna upstairs at The Echo.

SAINT MOTEL IS PLAYING THE SUPERGOODMUSIC SHOWCASE IN AUSTIN - MARCH 16th

I love, love, love Saint Motel. Not only are the quartet some of the coolest, nicest, most fun guys I've ever met - but their music is infectiously good. Everything off their first EP is delicious - including the original of "Dear Dictator."

In this video that song gets the treatment from Sam Sparro and Saint Motel's vocalist/guitarist AJ took on the role of director of the music video. I was actually on set for some of the shoot at the club formerly known as Cinespace and even have a very brief cameo (look for a green hat). Although they won't be performing the remix, you can almost count on the original or at least something off of the For Play EP down at SXSW.

Saint Motel are performing at a few different parties - but you'd be foolish to miss them at ours. They'll be in a headlining position and I have no doubts that they will rock the hell out of our stage at Lipstick 24 at 606 East 7th Street in Austin, TX on Wednesday March 16th.

Look for our eventbrite RSVP page soon - but for now, you can RSVP here.

A Fan's Friday - @OhSheida 's Halloween Weekend

SUPERGOODMUSIC had the privilege of giving away a handful of tickets to some Halloween themed music events around town this weekend (thank you Live Nation, Mike Tunney, Vanguard, Key Club). We gave one special follower, @OhSheida, a full slate of treats in the form of tickets to Miike Snow at Vanguard on Friday and Janelle Monae & Of Montreal at Hollywood Palladium on Saturday night.

Sheida took it the extra mile, stopped at The Roxy for Witch Hunt before Miike Snow and then sent us this bad-ass thank you. Rock on @OhSheida. You are, undoubtedly, a fan of supergoodmusic.

MY SUPERGOODMUSIC NIGHT: October 29, 2010

After working a nine hour shift Friday, I didn’t think I’d be able to make it out. I sucked it up and gathered the last bits of energy I had and headed to The Roxy. While standing in line I saw Napolean Dynamite, a few zombies and a couple of penguins waiting to get into The Roxy’s Witch Hunt.

Playing inside was Las Vegas’ rock band, Imagine Dragons. It was their final song and Dragons frontman did not hold anything back. He jumped towards the cymbals and started slapping them. Every time he slapped it, I was getting a burst of energy. Each slap equaled a shot straight to the head. The band made me feel like a snake; their guitarist my personally charmer. After that one song I was ready to let loose.

Up next was Saint Motel. In hindsight, the only thing I wish I did for this show was to learn their lyrics so I could have sang along with the rest of the room. Saint Motel not only kept my ears happy but had some visual eye candy too. They put a spell on me with clips from Hocus Pocus and live shots of them on stage. ‘To My Enemies’ and ‘Dear Dictator‘ were my favorite songs from that night. Look, if there is one thing I want you to take away from this, it’s to support and listen to this LA native band. After their riveting performance, I could’ve been all set for the night but oh no no! It was just getting started…..

Fast forward and I’m now sitting in bumper to bumper traffic driving down hollywood trying to make it to the Vanguard. You’re probably wondering who still plays at Vanguard? Well wonder no more! The boys of Miike Snow had a 90 minute dj set that could’ve lasted twice as long and I still would’ve itched for more. Miike Snow dropped and remixed their very own Black and Blue, Animal and Silvia. As a band, these Swedes are hella talented, and as a DJ group they don’t disappoint either. They know exactly what it takes to have a good time. They took it back to the homeland playing a little Swedish House Mafia and ending the night with Rusko.

It was definitely in my Top 10 Craziest Dance Parties. The crowd at Vanguard isn’t necessarily anything I ever want to be apart of, but that infectious energy that can only be supplied by epic music experiences is. Although I probably won’t head back to the Vanguard again unless I’m accompanied by Miike Snow, all in all, I had an amazing night and I have to shout out and thank Brandon “Supergoodmusic” Dorksy for that.

WITCH HUNTED

The SUPERGOODMUSIC Halloween weekend started with our favorite frequently costumed indie-rock band, Saint Motel at one of our favorite venues, The Roxy.

Before I'd even crossed Sunset to enter the doors - someone was hooting "Rolling on the River" to my girl @stephiebri in her amazing Tina Turner outfit. What followed from the bands was worthy of just as much hooting a hollering...

Performing as part of a stellar line-up that included Nico Vega and Imagine Dragons, Saint Motel held down the middle slot with old material, new material and lots of holiday energy (I came after Imagine Dragons had finished). Their new material sounds better with each performance and possesses the fun vocals, dance-worthy rhythm and indie melodies that should propel this band to be on the tip of music enthusiast's tongues in places far from Los Angeles. I can only hypothesize how tight their show will be come the end of their November tour with the above-mentioned artists.

Highlights of Saint Motel's set included a riveting "Dear Dictator," a ninja bassist later revealed to be normal bassist Dak (pictured below) and an intimate (and cute) stage theatrics between guitarists A/J and Sharp and the industry heavy audience, which included a handful of the cities indie rock radio personalities.

A long hiatus ensued before Nico Vega - in no short part because Saint Motel is such a hard act to follow. But Nico Vega appropriately brought the terror to the stage. Their set began with a bright-eyed Aja Volkman summoning the crowd with a pseudo-vocal chant (she was singing).

Marching around in her white dress (which was later ripped as part of a theatrical mock execution ceremony), Aja shared her organic and raw vocals as Rich and Dan backed her energy. The crowd, slightly thinner than during Saint Motel's set, fervently thrust their fists into the air and those who knew sang along for almost the entire forty-five minute to hour long set.

Much of Vega's music was unfamiliar to me, although I did pick out a few recognizable songs and knew the raucous encore Beast. The night ended with a good post-show gathering of fans outside, including some fun photo play with Dak from Saint Motel and Tina Turner....who wouldn't stop talking. LOL

If Witch Hunt is a sampling of what these two bands are offering on their west coast tour, than I'm even more sad that I'm not accompanying them for the whole damn thing....

Saint Motel: Contest, Tour & More

Cinematically inclined local indie-rockers, Saint Motel, recently announced a handful of exciting news to their fans - a short west coast tour with Nico Vega and Imagine Dragons that includes a stop over Halloween weekend at The Roxy, a huge performance at LA Weekly's LA 101 Fest at Gibson Amphitheatre on November 7th and a fan-inspired music video contest.

We're here to remind you exactly why you should go see one of their performances and break down the details on all three offerings...

If you've seen the rising and rocking quartet, than you certainly understand why a show of theirs should not be missed - they are epic, different every night and infectiously fun. The band's concerts are extremely fluid displays of raw talent packaged in a high energy, visually intoxicating performance.

The visual stimulation comes in the form of a sequenced stream of live video (of the band members and the crowd) that is intermittently spliced with stock footage and other film which gets projected behind the artists on stage. Fans not only can enjoy the band's audible creativity, but they get to see their visual artistry skills too (several band members studied film in college). And, if you're dancing at the right moment, you may even see yourself caught on camera on stage or on stage itself (fans rush the stage during their encores).

The band's musical talents are also worthy of note. Front-man/Singer and guitarist AJ has matured considerably - his vocals are much improved from their Spaceland residency a year ago. Lead guitarist Aaron Sharp rifles off rock riffs with apparent ease, styling them with great guitar faces and occasional fancy footwork. Greg Erwin, the band's drummer, and Dak, their bassist, hold down the rhythm section with beautiful chemistry - seemingly intuitively tuned into each other's personal frequency.

The exceptional musicianship combined with the DIY tech-savvy visual presentation combines for an amazing experience...one you certainly should not miss. AND, L.A. is offering you two chances to have that experience - one a week from Friday on October 29th at The Roxy for Witch Hunt with Nico Vega and opener Imagine Dragons (buy tickets HERE) and then less than two weeks later at The Gibson Amphitheatre on November 7th where they will perform on the same bill as Thievery Corporation and Massive Attack, amongst others (buy tickets HERE).

Not only do these guys play for their fans - they also engage with them too. Just recently Saint Motel announced a music video contest on their facebook fan page. We've included a few details of the contest below - but basically, they are giving you free reign to synch a song of theirs with your home-made video and share it with them - all you need is a youtube account, a facebook account and the ability to create a video.

SSMF 2010: A Showcase of Music's Future, Present & Past

SUPERGOODMUSIC arrived on the scene of Sunset Strip Music Festival shortly after the gates opened to experience the full spectrum of L.A.'s finest non-electronic music festival. The early day crowd consisted primarily of high school kids in cut-off denim shorts and midriff tops...not as offensive as lingerie clad EDC attendees, but still the kind of clothing that their parents would probably kill them for wearing (if they only knew). Their bellybutton rings and braces glistened in the Saturday afternoon sunshine as they made an attempt to appear oh-so-very rock n’ roll while sucking on their cigarettes in front of The Key Club. Sadly, half the kids there didn’t even know who Billy Corgan was (or The Smashing Pumpkins for that matter) but merely came to swig vodka from water bottles and grind up on girls while Big B performed in the background.

Maybe I age myself here, but frankly, I don’t give a damn if I do. The Smashing Pumpkins are one of the biggest bands I remember from when I was growing up. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is arguably the best album of their entire career, and their music video of “Tonight, Tonight” (back when MTV actually played music videos) is still etched in my memory. I remember first seeing that video in my living room and being absolutely blown away. Needless to say, it won an MTV Video Music Award in 1996, and in case 1996 is a little before your time, it was also covered by Passion Pit in a collaboration with Levi’s just earlier this year.

Long story short, I was not missing their performance that night for anything... not for some drunk kid blowing chunks next to my boots, not for some juiced-up meat-head trying to trample me, and definitely not for some loud-mouth nosy chick who couldn’t hold her liquor (I experienced all these things). So here we have my story of finally getting to see The Smashing Pumpkins and all the revelry that happened along the way. This experience is also known as The Sunset Strip Music Festival...

AJ from Saint Motel (is that a gang sign?)

Anyone who has lived in LA knows the traffic on Sunset Boulevard near the strip is absolute chaos. If you’ve never lived in LA, then for a moment just imagine a primary artery running through a city, that is constantly undergoing construction and being bombarded with tourists, but unlike the Hollywood Boulevard tourist traps, the strip is a bevy of historic bars, legendary hangouts, and a Mecca for the music scene. Now envision dealing with that on a Saturday afternoon during the Sunset Strip Music Festival and also trying to make it in time to see Billy Corgan’s interview at The Viper Room.

Maybe after four years of living in Los Angeles, I’ve learned a thing or two about side roads and slick maneuvering skills because I managed to make it just a few precious minutes after Billy took the microphone. The Viper Room is a dark, small cave-like place that tonight consisted of maybe thirty people at most, primarily of diligent reporters, but entirely of appreciative fans. Billy sat with his young son Jason, who donned some sort of super-hero/wrestler mask. Billy came off as a kind, soft-spoken individual, a caring father, and a seasoned musician. He spoke about the first record he bought (Meet the Beatles! for only a quarter), the pros and cons of an internet saturated society, and of course, he talked about the band. After awhile, Billy spoke about the importance of being entirely you and not trying to be someone else, or even one particular version of yourself, because the act will wear thin in a short time. As this theory applied to his career, he reflected, “at least it’s me pissing them off and not the imitation of me pissing them off.” A few moments later, Billy and his son left the stage, graciously stopping to thank those who expressed their appreciation for his talents. They stepped off the curb and into their silver SUV, vanishing into the sunshine.

After that, I realized I'd missed the majority of Saint Motel (pictured above and apparently exceptional) and had some time to kill so I decided to check out Big B. I liked him... he was a large fellow with tattoos, what wasn’t to like? The crowd was still sparse at this point, especially with anyone over 20 years old, but I barely look 18 so fortunately, I fit right in. Big B grabbed the mike and engaged the crowd shouting, “If you like to smoke weed and drink whiskey, put your hands up in the air!” Of course, the teenage crowd immediately threw their hands madly into the air because words like “weed” and “whiskey” naturally excite them. I only threw one hand in the air because even though my smoking weed days are done, my whiskey days are forever. Trying to outdo his brethren, a 15 year-old shirtless boy next to me decided hands in the air were not enough and threw up in the middle of the crowd, half on a garbage can and half next to my boots.

After my Big B experience, and the blown chunks taboot, I decided to check out Neon Trees, a group with which I am somewhat familiar, mostly because of their mainstream hit “Animal." Personally, that song is a little too pop for my taste, but I figured I’d give it a go anyway. One thing I can say about Neon Trees, especially the lead singer Tyler Glenn, is that they have high energy. High energy is always something I enjoy in a performance, but it looked like Tyler may have watched too many cliche rock n’ roll videos pre-show. The 26 year-old was saddled up in black leather pants, using his microphone as a lasso, humping his guitar players leg, and spitting on the stage any chance he got.

If anything, maybe he should take a note from Billy Corgan’s interview earlier in the day and work on being himself, and not just some version of someone else (ahem, Jim Morrison). But again, he’s 26 and relatively new to the mainstream music scene, so I’ll cut him some slack. Plus, the set was pretty good. Did I know most of the songs? No, definitely not. But was the band enjoyable musically as well as performance-wise? I’m going to say yes.

Now I have got to be honest - I unfortunately skipped out on most of Semi Precious Weapons to sit in my air-conditioned car and charge my cell-phone, which now doubled as my camera (thankfully, SUPERGOODMUSIC employed someone else to take pictures for us - a very talented Megan Thompson) Luckily, however, I came back just in time to see Stevy Pyne from Semi Precious Weapons hanging from the rafters. The lead singer, Justin Tranter, beckoned the crowd to “Forget Security! Climb on stage!” And that’s just what they did... taking some of the Sunset Strip Music Festival banner with them.

Next up on my list was Common. Unfortunately, they had severe technical difficulties and the sound check went on for over thirty minutes. The drunk, over-heated crowd was getting antsy, and the time left before Slash would start playing on the opposing stage was diminishing. Ultimately, the trio decided to play off-monitor and Common finally took the stage. Let me say that it was completely worth the wait. He was seriously one of my favorite performers of the night, pulling from classic hip-hop artists like Snoop Dogg and even The Fugees. I knew I wanted to catch some of Slash’s performance (as he was the 2010 SSMF honoree) but Common was so good that after each song I kept telling myself, “Okay, just one more song and then I’ll go." But each song just kept on getting better and better, and eventually he even broke out some freestyle jams.

Needless to say, by the time I made it over to Slash, I could barely snake my way to the front of the crowd. Luckily, I’m rather small and pushed my way through the scantily clad girls and aging blondes who were whining to the club promoters about their lack of drugs. A few songs and “Sweet Child of Mine” later and I had my Slash fix, so I made my way back to the east stage to catch Kid Cudi.

Since so many artists had been having difficulties with the sound system, Kid Cudi couldn’t take the stage until way after his allotted time slot. By then it was getting dark, and the crowd was working on hour six or seven of beer-guzzling. I stood waiting for Kid Cudi for nearly forty minutes while getting pummeled by drunken men and teenagers lacking in body control and annoyed by intoxicated women. The time that Smashing Pumpkins would take the stage was drawing near, and as much as I enjoy Kid Cudi, Smashing Pumpkins trumped all the rest of the performers for me that evening. After nearly getting trampled by a mass of inebriated concert attendees, I decided to throw in the towel and bail.

I watched Kid Cudi from the back and heard one song before I trekked over to see my boy Billy Corgan. It was a good thing I did because I think they were the only performers of the evening to actually go on early. They took the big stage with no introduction, just an epic light show and their trademark guitar-heavy and densely-layered sound. They opened with “Astral Planes” and continued with some of my personal favorites such as “Today” and “Bullet with Butterfly Wings."

My mission was accomplished. My day-turned-night was a success. Maybe it was full of half-dressed and completely drunk teenagers, but hey, when it comes to rock n’ roll anything goes, and I like it (yes, I do).
