Tonight in L.A. (November 8, 2012)

-->
No shortage of good music for Los Angelenos tonight - from a slate of rock shows that we're giving tickets away to (Cat Power at The Palladium; Delta Spirit at The Wiltern; The Kin at The Roxy) to the last of the filthy beats from UZ at La Cita, its a night to get it in.

The crooning sounds of Nick Waterhouse erupt at The Constellation Room with opening licks from Boogaloo Assassins.  Also in the O.C. - Classixx, RAC, Cosmic Kids and Jerome LOL make the indie kids dance at Detroit Bar.  GottaDanceDirty crew does the same at their Versus event at The Central SAPC.  Iheartcomix fans mash out with Mount Kimbie at Icon Ultra Lounge since Los Globos is temporarily closed for events.

There is also The Kin and Act As If at The Roxy.  Want tickets?  We've got a few to dish out - just mention @theroxy and @supergoodmusic on twitter or email us at contest@supergoodmusic.com

Tonight in L.A. (October 25, 2012)

The spooks of Halloween are basically upon us with a handful of events tonight to get your costumes dirty and your feet moving.

The weekly VS Party at The Central SAPC isn't a bad start - near lingerie like clothing is par for the course when it comes to attire, so a Halloween flavored dance party might step the naughty up a notch on the westside.   Neither is the Billboard Conference wrap party hosted by Hunnypot at Vanguard - there will be music in two rooms, including the verbal venom of Nina Dioz, catchy indie rock of Das Tapes and more.  Both events are technically free - although VS turns to paid entrance after 11.

If you're looking for headliners - look no further than Live Nation venues tonight.  Matt & Kim make sounds bigger than their 2 person show at The Wiltern with support from Oberhofer.  Over at Hollywood Palladium - Two Door Cinema Club gets into business with support from Friends and St. Lucia.  We are proudly giving away tickets to both shows so email us at contest@supergoodmusic.com if you want in on the action or alternatively tweet out @supergoodmusic @livenationLA and either @thepalladium or @wiltern.

On the east side I like what Echo is putting down - upstairs the indie vibes of White Arrows, Kitten and Blondfire might capture your attention, but personally I'm drawn to the show downstairs at Echoplex with Goldroom as headliner.  Rather than attempt to describe their eclectic sound - Goldroom is done justice by watching their video:

Other notable shows featuring up and comers include Bixel Boys at The Mint, TS & The Past Haunts at El Cid , Tropicool at Detroit Bar and Oona at Harvard & Stone.

  • Matt & Kim, Oberhofer @ The WIltern
  • Two Door Cinema Club, Friends, St. Lucia @ Hollywood Palladium
  • Motion City Soundtrack, Jukebox The Ghost, Now, Now @ House of Blues
  • Paper Route, Trails & Ways, Faded Paper @ Bootleg Bar
  • God’Amn Gallows @ SLO Brew
  • Nia Andrews, Trevor Ware, Dexter Story, Tawiah, John Robinson, Jamire Williams @ Elizaveta, Nicki Bove, Emma Joy @ WitZend
  • Harlow Gold @ Harvelle’s
  • Taking Back Sunday, Man Overboard, Bayside @ Club Nokia
  • From The Jam, Right The Stars @ El Rey Theatre
  • Night Moves, Chief Winter People @ The Satellite
  • White Arrows, Kitten, Blondfire, Labyrinth Ear @ The Echo
  • Goldroom, Ghost Beach, Carousel @ Echoplex
  • Alesana, In Fear & Faith, Vampires Everywhere, Glamour of the Kill, All Human @ House of Blues – Anaheim
  • Bastard Suns, Knock-Out, Under The Influence, Otto the Dog @ The Roxy
  • Shwarzenator, That Metal Bar, They Stay Dead, Knee High Fox @ The Viper Room
  • Madusa, Crime Rock, Annacorn, Summer Rona, Ghetto Physics @ On The Rox

Get Gaymous with Scissors Sisters

June is gay pride month and what better way to celebrate it than with the appropriately named Scissor Sisters at Hollywood Palladium on Saturday?  If you want to move, sweat and meet your new gay best-friend - look no further than Sunset and Centro on Saturday June 16, 2012.

We're dishing out a pair of free tickets to their poppy-gaymous glam rock electroclash dance party - and we strongly recommend you hit us up at contest@supergoodmusic.com if you want to go. The formerly Fibrillating Scissor Sisters are celebrating the release of their album Magic Hour (released May 28, 2012) and will most surely be dropping "Only The Horses" "Shady Love" and "Lets Have a Kiki" for their first time in LA - plus classics like "Take Your Mama" and "Fire With Fire."

If you don't want to chance it - ensure you'll be inside for the party by getting tickets here via Live Nation.

Theophilus London Plays Free Show Tonight; Other Hip-Hop In Town

If your Thursday night is still open, then consider yourself lucky because, the Avalon is the place to be and you are invited free of charge. Chegg, Live Nation, and College Battle proudly present the Textbooks and Tickets tour featuring live performances by Theophilus London (in video below), MNDR, Milkman, college battle finalist Rozzi Crane and more special guests. Adding even more fuel to this night of exceptional hip-hop are DJ sets by Ben Oprstu and Burn Unit.

I've been told by respected concert goers that Theophilus has really amped up his game and his live show has improved - so we're going to give him another shot. MNDR is fun and we'll withhold judgment on the rest until we catch their show. If you can't make it to Avalon - or are looking for something at a smaller venue - The Dean's List plays Key Club and Das Racist, Danny Brown and Despot are at The Roxy tonight.

For free admission, make sure to RSVP/ Doors open at 8pm

LA 101 TOMORROW

Craving some grade A music? Then keep your Sunday open, in case you haven’t already, and get yourself over to the Gibson Amphitheatre for LA Weekly’s, LA 101. This savory night features some of your favorite artists: Headliners, The Airborne Toxic Event along with Tokyo Police club, Built to Spill, Delta Spirit, Electric Guest, JENNY O, and The Drowning Men.

Instead of spending Sunday thinking about Monday, kick back, relax and treat yourself to LA 101. The show officially begins at 7:15pm but don’t wait ‘till then to get there; Festival grounds open at 3pm for a multitude of live music, art, vendors, and some of LA’s finest food trucks. And just to help a couple of you dodge the possibility of this year’s show following in the same sold-out pattern as 2010’s crowd of 6,200, SUPERGOOD MUSIC will be giving away a pair of tickets…

Deadmau5 Hits SoCal Again!

Deadmau5 just can't get enough of Southern California....or maybe we can't get enough of him. Either way, he is storming back through the state on his Meowington Hax tour at the start of Halloween Weekend.

If you missed his epic four night sold out run at Hollywood Palladium - NOW is your chance to correct that mistake. Tickets for the Petco Park show on October 28th go on sale tomorrow at noon via Live Nation. With support from Feed Me and Tommy Lee & DJ Aero and special guest Avicii the show is likely to be a certified banger.

So, don't sleep - get your tickets from Live Nation starting at noon tomorrow!

Dysfunction Junction

(image from Downtown Lobby)

Sunset Junction Street Fair officially got the kabosh put on them this morning when their appeal to obtain the permit was denied. The two day event which was going to take place this weekend is officially cancelled.

After a meeting earlier this week confirmed that the three decade running community event did not have the city's permission due to an outstanding $400,000 bill to the city, festival organizers were told an immediate payment of $142,000 might save the event. Despite allegedly raising $152,000, the cash was not in hand as of this morning (according to festival organizers - they'd "hoped" to have it tomorrow) and the demonstrations of anti-Junction sentiment, mostly from letters from community members, indicated the community festival had lost some of its local supporters.

Those that opposed the festival were aptly prepared to argue why the Junction should be cancelled and the festival's organizers and supporters simply did not have enough ammunition for a counter attack. With a huge debt, a nearly non-existent clean up attempt last year, and Hanson and Butthole Surfers as headliners - I'm not that surprised that the Silverlake Counsel told the fest to take a hike.

While the absence of Junction is certainly a disappointment - the city shouldn't be stuck with the festival organizers' bills. The same festival organizer who had already advanced a bunch of talent for the event didn't even pony up to pay the city and that is just insulting. If I was sitting on that council - it would be hard for me to respect the position of the festival organizer who essentially didn't pay for the mess they created (and charged people to create).

And now there is a whole new mess - a cancelled event. Not only does that bring up a handful of potentially breached contracts and creditors. But with many artists not booking local gigs to respect the festival's radius clause - there is suddenly an explosion of quality acts looking for places to play not just this weekend, but all through out September. Keep your eyes peeled for wild impromptu indie BBQs this weekend as well as updates to local venues calendars in September.

The fate and future of Sunset Junction is not fully told yet as Live Nation was one of the main parties to step up to make the event actually occur this year. A rumored $100,000 donation from the event beast put Junction in a position to pay down some of their debt - but it was unfortunately too little too late. The city might change their tune to the festival in the future with a backer like Live Nation though - who could clearly support clean up efforts. Whether or not Live Nation can resurrect the event - stay tuned to other local blogs and tweeters, eastside streetpoles and lightposts and random bands facebook accounts to find out about all the renegade Junction shows that are sure to occur.
