Tonight in L.A. (February 23, 2013)

Its the last Saturday of February, a night before the Oscars and its time to get funky!   To help, Big Sam's Funky Nation is coming into town to let it all loose at The Mint.  Catch that trombone blow the roof of the Pico venue with some help from Quinn Deveaux.

For some more talented musicianship consider seeing one of the masters of slide guitar - Robert Randolph - at Royce Hall.

Those funky and jazz tickets sometimes can be a little outside the price range - so maybe you need some cheaper (or free) options.  Funky Sole's weekly event goes down at The Echo, and is free before 11.  Tonight Oliver Wang does a special DJ set.  Another DJ party with a low price tag is Chrome Canyons and Peanut Butter Wolf over at Los Globos.  For a little more money you can get a little freakier with Freq Nasty and LowRIDERz at El Rey Theatre.

No list would be complete without mentioning that 311 invades The Roxy for the first of two nights that are certain to sell out and be packed to the gills.  DJ Unite opens up at the venue.

Tonight in L.A. (November 13, 2012)

Its not your average Tuesday when Wiz Khalifa comes to town - and he is bringing a lot of the Taylor Gang with him to Gibson Amphitheatre.  Brush off some black and yellow, whip out a G Pen to get trippy with Juicy J and get ready to play hard after work....can't afford that ticket or want a more intimate hip hop experience?  Go with Mod Sun at The Roxy.

Or try some gentler sounds from Clairy Brown and The Banging Rackettes at The Mint.  They're making a stop through LA as they visit from the down under to do a few television performances.  She could be the next big thing in pop vocal - so might be worth your time.  The same can be said for Gavin Turek who performs at The Central SAPC for the second installment of her residency.  She is joined by Zak Waters, Amy Krebs and The Ross Sea Party.

If you snagged tickets to Gary Clark Jr.'s sold out Troubadour show - good look.

The Second To Last Night of The Year...Where's that Pre-NYE Party At/

Tons of people scramble to figure out what to do as they go out with the old and into the new, but the reality is that a ton of talent packs into Los Angeles to get well paid on New Years EVE and some of that talent also performs the day before.

Take advantage of the quality entertainment and much more reasonable pricing by checking out any of the following:

1. Asher Roth at The Viper Room w/ special guests Midnite Theory, Rob Roy, Luke Christoher and Kosha Dillz.

Asher Roth will be performing as part of a promotional run to support his Pabst & Jazz mix tape that highlights the maturation of the former "College" loving MC. It is the precursor to his 2012 Def Jam release and he's recruited some other lyrically talented individuals to join him on the Sunset Strip stage. Local artist and Dim Mak act, Rob Roy, may still have fur in his cap. Haven't heard a ton from him since he blazed trails on the internet with the "Fur In My Cap" video. Young buck Luke Christopher also joins the party. You might remember him from his Asher Roth collabo "Roof Tops."

World touring, Jersey born Kosha Dillz is also supposed to join the party as a surprise guest. He is performing on New Years Eve at Viper Room, but will probably join Asher to spit some of his "West Coast Flavor" as well as cuts from his 2011 release Gina & The Garage Sale.

Midnite Theory opens up the whole damn thing.

We've got a pair of tickets to give away for this one so shout us out on twitter (@supergoodmusic) or e-mail contest@supergoodmusic.com to enter the contest.

2. Beats Antique, Random Rab, Emancipator & Lynx @ Club Nokia

Get your fulfillment of booty shaking beats and bass at Club Nokia with this awesome line up put together by The Do Lab. For those that acquired a bit too many party supplies to close out 2011, get after it early with this pseudo-festival line up.

Emancipator compose electronic sonicscapes with the best of them. Entirely instrumental - with orchestral elements layered on some tracks (including "Nevergreen" below) - Emancipator music is organic, beautiful and relaxing.

Random Rab composes bass-strumentals himself. His sonic textures differ from Emancipator's; less of an orchestrated feel with Rab, who seems to be driven much more by beat (although his tunes have great melody). Check out "Jewel of Now" below:

Beats Antique will get you in the festive mode before NYE even starts with their belly-dancing, costumed, beat-enthused performance. They always make sure things get a little weird - in the drugged out, hippie-esque good sort of weird way. Check them out at Bonnaroo -

3. The Growlers, Allah-Las, TRMRS @ The Echo

The raspy, folky/blues-like indie rock from The Growlers ends its series of end of 2011 shows at The Echo with a stellar support group of Allah-Las and TRMRS.

The former are high on lots of local bloggers lists of LA bands to watch for. This video of an earlier performance at The Echo gives you an idea of the soundtrack they'd be providing. Nostalgic feeling indie rock jams.....filled with shakers.

TRMRS are the act on the bill I know too little about. I can't say much about them other than that they use cool color filters in their "One Foot" video (see below), but my guess is they are a suitable musical hors'douvres for this bill.

Growlers are the veteran act here - with a honed and tasteful grit to their indie rock. Clearly a favorite of someone important at The Echo - its not hard to understand why. There is an undeniable charm to their music. A charm that hopefully sets the mood right as you close out your 2011.

4. Caspa & Dillon Francis @ Avalon

Why would you want to go to this show? Probably cause Dillon Francis is a bad ass whose name won't be going anywhere for a really long time. Just check out this video for "I.D.G.A.F.O.S." Don't know what that means? Check your urban dictionary, because I don't give a fuck or shit enough to tell you....

Dillon is a rising star - a darling artist for many more established in the electronic game. You can expect a lot more from Mr. Francis, including great supporting artists because he won't be joined by just anyone either. He'll be joined by bad ass dub stepper Caspa. Check out Caspa with Mr. Hudson - "Love Never Dies (Back for the First Time)."

5. Tim Reynolds @ The Mint

If you like guitar play - see Tim. That's all I have to say - this video says the rest.

The Summer of Orgone

We make no mistakes about it, we love Orgone. They've given us yet another reason to jump on their bandwagon, with their latest offering Cali Fever.

The 12 track offering is dirty funk at its finest. For a city known for its indie rock, electro fantastic kids, DJs and formerly for its thriving South Central hip-hop, Orgone is putting Los Angeles on the map as a funky town too. The 9 piece band helmed by the charming, soulful and beautiful Fanny Franklin on the vocal tracks and powered by Stewart Killen's pounding percussion on their pure instrumental cuts delivers fire on their latest Ubiquity release. (On a side note, this album will certainly satisfy the Ubiquity guarantee, as do all Orgone releases; the Ubiquity Guarantee, which allows you to return a CD to the label in exchange for a new one if you are not satisfied with your purchase, is one of the reasons it is my favorite record label and the reason I actually purchased my first Orgone disc on pure speculation).

The catchy and soulful "Give It Up" is funtoxicating, and "Cali Fever" and "The Cleaner" are two others that are just phenomenal live. Those songs, which are reminiscent of some of my favorites of their earlier works, like "Funky Nassau," really drive the album.

The nostalgic "It's Time Tonight" is like a 60's soul throwback meets the electro-dance generation - like Martha and the Vandellas took some ecstasy, partied in the tents at Coachella, and went to record a song. It is straight funk disco. It epitomizes what LA funk should be and represents quintessential Orgone - dope ass funk influenced by the upbeat dance indie scene that thrives in the sunny streets of Los Angeles, but nonetheless keeps true to funks roots and the rhythm that is its foundation.

Songs like "Doing Me Wrong" show the versatility of the band and Fanny's fantastic vocal skills. Wrong also provides a good window into their storytelling songwriting nature. On the flipside, the band also delivers a handful of spectacular and equally funky instrumental jams like the melodic and laid back "The Only One" or the slow-rolling chill afternoon cruising jam "Lookout."

While I could dissect the album some more, you'd best be served to just watch what the band is capable of and go purchase the damn thing on the strength of my endorsement and/or specualtion. That said, here is a taste of their funky jams from Bonnaroo 2010:

Although the below videos are not of their new material (they are actually covers), they nonetheless showcase the talent and cohesiveness of the crew. Here is "Brothers on the Slide" and "Ain't No Use" from their late and early Bonnaroo performance respectively.

Having just wowed newcomers at Bonnaroo and recently turned heads at The Roxy and Spaceland, I'm vying for them to come westside and play at the Dakota Lounge (formerly The Temple Bar) on August 11th. As of this blog post they haven't confirmed - so go give them some shit on their myspace and facebook pages encouraging them to accept the headlining position for the SUPERGOODMUSIC party and we'll make sure you all have a supergood time!

Watch The Grammys - its the Best Live Music in Town Tonight

We could advise you to go to various places in town tonight to catch the potential next big thing or just to hear a smooth crooner or some sexy guitar, however, we don't think that is where you'd witness the best and most supergood music there is to see on this last Sunday of January.

Actually, this is one of the few times we are going to advise you to stay home. Stay there and watch the Grammys. Maybe leave to go to Target to get yourself some 3D specs to enjoy the Michael Jackson tribute performance to the fullest, but maybe you saved yours from Avatar and are hoping those work.

If the Grammy's are too mainstream for you or you just want to DVR them for time porting so that you can skip commercials and enjoy a Sunday on the town, then here is who is playing and where they are playing:

Major Johnson-Finley (7PM), Katie Costello (8PM), Wesley Smith (9PM) @ Room 5
