Das Racist Funny Raps at Echoplex This Tuesday

Animated funny rappers Das Racist return to Los Angeles to grace Echoplex's stage for what hopes to be another night of swagged out hip-hop and hilarity at Check Yo Ponytail 2. If their pseud0-hit "Michael Jackson" and its music video (above) are any sort of harbinger - the trio will likely succeed in delivering just that.

We're making it a bit easier for you to indulge in their antics by giving away a couple pairs of tickets to those of you that let it be known exactly why you should be there. Broadcast your sentiments to the world in a comment on our facebook page, via twitter (make sure to tag @supergoodmusic & @theechoLA) or privately by emailing contest@supergoodmusic.com. We'll pick and notify the winners sometime before noon the day of the show.

Its an Unknown Mortal Orchestra Kind of Weekend...

This weekend Los Angeles gets a double dose of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, the Portland groomed psychedelic indie rock act formed by New Zealand native Ruban Nielson. After their arrival in 2010 and subsequent eruption as a buzz band in 2011, they dropped their Wes Anderson esque video for "Strangers are Strange" in February 2012 in anticipation of their tour.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Strangers Are Strange from Pharm on Vimeo.

Now they find themselves on that tour and inhabiting the Echoplex (Saturday) and The Central SAPC (Sunday) - with support from White Arrows and trash-pop act TRMRS (who play earlier that day at KXSC Fest for FREE!). We have two pairs of tickets to give away for each show - email contest@supergoodmusic.com or comment on our facebook page to enter. Winners will be notified by 2 pm on the day of the show.

Speaking of UMO - look out for Kosha Dillz next drop off The Jetlag EP coming soon - it features him and Ducky rapping over some Unknown Mortal Orchestra on a track called "Friends." Check www.koshadillzworld.com or his Facebook for the release...

From Underground to International Hit Song - "Somebody That I Used To Know" Covers Are Abundant

From the quirky rework of Walk Off The Earth with five people on one guitar, to JaymeDee's kitchen floor cover - there are plenty of acts and talent taking their stab at Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know." The covers have gotten so extensive there are even covers of covers, acapella versions and cover mash-ups (see the Walk Off The Earth/Gold Digger mash up in the second to last video).

The thread that ties it all together - the fact that Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know is such a good song that it sounds good as long as you have a scintilla of talent to speak of. Check out these versions and then enjoy Gotye's live KCRW performance:

Dance Floor Banger: The Night Out (A-Trak Remix)

Martin Solveig's "The Night Out" already is a go to driving anthem, dance floor kickstarter and party track. A-Trak just added his own Fool's Gold spin to it that encourages you to two-step and get down.

New Release/Video: Dean Risko - "Trouble"

As the opener for a heavy hip-hop slated Kosha Dillz presents OY VEY LA event at The Viper Room on Wednesday February 15th, the young opener Dean Risko delivered an unexpectedly soulful set of quasi pop-tunes, including "Trouble," a potential future hit that he just released a video for.

The 23 year old Johannesburg, South Africa native sings, raps and even has a little b-boy steeze wrapped up in his skinny, stylishly fashioned frame. His whole ethos and style reminds me a lot of Mike Posner, just with less cheesy lyrics and a swagger that seems a bit more authentic. Its like Risko is doing what Posner does better than Posner does it. Maybe its because Risko is a better dancer, because Risko is more attractive (doesn't he look a little like the white guy from Chromeo) or maybe it's just because Dean hasn't been cast in the limelight yet. I can't really put my finger on it, but there is certainly something that I am feeling a bit more than I felt "31 Minutes Til Take Off." Go see Dean's live show if you're not convinced by the song, writing and video. (Caveat - Mike Posner's live show is still superior to Dean's. Dean is solid and carries a performance well - but Mike's got a bit more experience and a whole band.)

Dean penned "Trouble" himself and with hooks like "I don't know where you're from, but you're in the wrong place if you're looking for love. Now, if trouble is what you want. Well, come and get you some, come and get you some" - Dean is hitting on themes that resonate for many. The Echo Park resident carries himself with a casual demeanor, but an intense hunger to succeed, and with tracks like "Trouble" it is only a matter time before he does.

Follow dean on twitter at www.twitter.com/deanrisko.

The "Trouble EP" is his first official release and is available for download/purchase at deanrisko.bandcamp.com.

One Upping Posner: Dean Risko - "Trouble"

I just discovered this future star Wednesday night when he played SUPERGOODMUSIC's Superdope Wednesday event at The Viper Room. As the opener for a heavy hip-hop slate, the young Dean Risko delivered a soulful, hip-hop esque set of quasi-pop tunes - including "Trouble." The 23 year old Johannesburg, South Africa native sings, raps and even has a little b-boy steeze wrapped up in his skinny, stylishly dressed frame.

Risko reminds me a lot of Mike Posner, but with lyrics that are not nearly as cheesy and a swagger that seems a bit more authentic. Maybe its because Risko is a better dancer, maybe its because Risko is more physically attractive, or maybe its just because Risko isn't big yet - butAnd I mean no disrespect to Posner - Risko just does what Posner does better than Posner does it.

His Trouble EP is his first official release and is available for download/purchase at deanrisko.bandcamp.com

find Dean Risko on Facebook

Thanks for your support!

Jungle Fever? - Gucci Mane's "I'm In Love With A White Girl"

Gucci Mane just released the video for his soon to be club anthem - "I'm In Love With A White Girl." Its not that this track is anything epic, its not, but with a hook like that - I'd put my chips on white girls wanting to sing along and demanding the track from their local DJ. The catch phrase "once you go black, you'll never go back" clearly doesn't apply here as Gucci and Yo Gotti relish in their love for Caucasian race.

Assisted by scantily clad females, some white girls with serious booty and some clever white girl glasses - its quasi-entertaining standard hip-hop fare.

Skrillex - "Bangarang" Video Released

Skrillex's first post-Grammy music video release continues his content onslaught. This week's treat is "Bangarang" - a mischievous tale of young ice cream thieves. The mildly creepy, back alley setting seems eerily familiar to the "First of the Year" video - but this video has a few more bright spots. Little kids. Ice cream trucks. Explosives. Ya know - the good stuff.

Bonnaroo Announcement Courtesy of ESPN's John Anderson

With festival announcements, line-ups and promo getting cooler and quirkier every year - Bonnaroo made sure that they continue to set the standard by recruiting ESPN anchor John Anderson to assist on their announcement.

Relishing in former non-existent band glory, Anderson delivers a few funny words before the video goes all synthed out and cartoony with the list of artists performing at Bonnaroo 2012. Hard to imagine them topping their 10th anniversary line-up - but they may have done it with this one!

Pu$$y - Iggy Azalea

Dirty subject matter. Check.

Kid with mad swagger. Check.

Gratuitous shots of kittens. Check.

This video is a winner and I'm actually impressed with Iggy Azalea. Her raps come off casual, smooth and effortless. As long as she is better than Kreayshawn live - I'm down.

Converse's Three Artists, One Song Births an F'ing Miracle

Gorillaz really dropped a gem on the music world today with the revelation that their "Three Artists, One song" partnership with Converse yielded a new song called "DoYaThing" featuring Damon Albarn with James Murphy and Andre 3000. Had you called me yesterday and said - want to check out this new song by Gorillaz, LCD Soundsystem and Outkast - I would have smacked myself in the face to make sure I wasn't dreaming. Turns out dreams can come true... on February 23rd - when the song will be available for free download via Converse's website.

Initial feedback from The Sun's Bizzare blog sounds promising as they noted the beat resembles tracks from Plastic Beach and reported that "Damon must have been inspired by Andre because he raps rather than signs the opening two verse himself. James then sings on a chorus before Andre takes over, singing and rapping in impressive fashion."

In conjunction with the whole campaign - Gorillaz Jamie Hewlett designed four different Gorillaz converse shoes - which you can also see on Converse' site.

2/3 De La Soul Drop "Pushin' Aside, Pushin' Along"

Part of the legendary trio of De La Soul is back at it again - dropping some fresh hip-hop hotness that makes you want to strut, bob your head and look like you did when you first popped in their Stakes Is High record. Plug 1 and Plug 2 reconfirm that they were part of what made the group's sound so swag.

Tokimonsta "Darkest" is a Beautiful Light

L.A. beatstress Tokimonsta, who recently signed a record deal with Payday/Ultra Records, is already making their investment look like a good one with the release of this sexy, soft low end music video for "Darkest." The song features Gavin Turek and the dreamy video was directed by Doug Chang and crowd funded through Kickstarter!

The music video is a real gem - Tokimonsta is basically Gavin's dreamweaver - building the architecture of her dream from some alternate world or control room. Quite fitting for a song off an album called "Creature Dreams." Despite the song's title - the end of the video is bright, happy and light, with a pucker-lipped, rabbit eared Tokimonsta closing it out.

Make up your own metaphors and judge for yourself - we've digested it and think its dope.

Miike Snow - "Paddling Out" Video

Something about Miike Snow's music just grips me every time. I'm oozing with anticipation for their record, excited to catch them at Coachella and just hoping I'll be able to see them wherever they're playing in Austin during SXSW.

"Paddling Out" is hopefully a great window into what their new record will sound like - cause it just means they'll be continuing their trend of kick-ass left of center melodically sound quasi-dance floor bangers that are ripe for remixing and perfect to drive to. While this music video is positively weird and out of this world - the song isn't. Great structure with some sexy vocal cries in the hook. Enjoy...

Pimps of Joytime Know How To Party...

Jambanders, funksters and Brooklyn nostalgics can all rejoice on Friday at The Mint when Pimps of Joytime take to the stage. Traveling to the cosmos with their musical concoctions - the party funk band is sure to take the crowd along with them on their journey.

If you've caught them - you don't need to be convinced why they are the act to see if you just want to get your groove on. If you haven't - their shows are non-stop waves of funk jams that keep you two stepping, drinking and merry for a good two hours plus. You'll be sweating it up next to a stranger not even thinking twice about it.

Whether that sounds like a blast to you or not - it would be probably at least sound better if it didn't cost you a penny to do it....and we can help in that department. We have a couple pairs of tickets to give away to someone lucky who emails us at contest@supergoodmusic.com or share this blog post on their facebook page. Whatever you do - just make sure that you keep that music playing!
