New Heat: FIND MY WAY by MIND THE GAP

Hopefully you've been watching your step in the music game in early 2013 - because then you might already be familiar with Mind The Gap and their edgy bouncy electronic pop rock single "Find My Way."  To celebrate their ballsy anthem - they released a performance video yesterday and made the song available in exchange for an e-mail address on their website  www.mindthegapsound.com.  Teenagers to 30 somethings filled with angst about life need this track on their mobile phone, ipod and computer STAT - it speaks directly to the struggles we've all experienced trying to figure this thing called life out and the song beats hard and f'ing pops!

"Find My Way" is the first single off of MTG's forthcoming EP Youth due out sometime later in 2013.  If this track portends what the rest of their EP is like - I'm expecting fierce and energetic dopeness in a diverse package.   And why shouldn't I have that expecation?  MTG may be able to lay claim to the title "most diverse rock band" as they're a truly unique quartet spearheaded by a Jewish vocalist from the suburbs of Cleveland, OH, and backed by Sri Lankan hip-hop producer, a Mexican guitarist/producer and a Korean songwriter.   Not only does their diversity make a statement - their musicianship and on-stage chemistry truly validates the famous Abdul line "opposites attract" and evidences that sometimes the best content comes in the most unlikely and colorful of packages.

You can catch MTG performing at The Hotel Cafe on February 15th, but check their website for updates as there will likely be a few other performances popping up and peep the video below with the filthy remixed outro....

Tonight in L.A. (Saturday November 10, 2012)

Don't sleep on your local concert calendar tonight because there are quite a few gems in L.A.'s backyard.

Mumford & Sons makes a trip to Hollywood Bowl for the first of two shows that help close out the season.  They are joined by Dawes and I have no doubts it will be spectacular.  Go a little south on Cahuenga and then head over to Vine if you want the turn up to get real as Wolfgang Gartner, Proxy and Popseka keep Avalon's dance floor saturated and sweaty.  Marc Broussard & Friends also play in Hollywood at The Hotel Cafe; if you're into musicianship - stopping in would not be a bad decision.

Local acts join forces tonight to create some L.A. power bills - including Saint Motel and Leftover Cuties at Saint Rocke and Warner Drive and Love And A .38 at The Roxy.  We have one pair of tickets to give away for Saint Motel so tweet out @supergoodmusic @saintrocke and @saintmotel if interested or holler at us at contest@supergoodmusic.com.

Hit + Run celebrates 7 years of t-shirt printing and parties at The Echoplex and Funky Sole gets a special visit from DJ Spinna upstairs at The Echo.

VV Brown Hits The Town

British Queen, VV Brown is putting her fingerprints on Los Angeles this week, playing two hot shows. One is tonight at Los Angeles’ Bardot for "It's a School Night" and then Wednesday at The Hotel Café, where Vanessa “VV” Brown plans to take you on a musical high.

The beautiful songstress infuses raw elements with an upbeat mixture of rock, soul and pop. Buzzing off her second, upcoming full-length album, her single "Children" (featuring Chiddy of Chiddy Bang) marks the tone for Lollipops and Politics. Set for release on February 7, 2012, Lollipops and Politics is simply, “a positive way to somehow talk about some serious things (VV).”

Having appeared on Ellen, Rachael Ray, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, The Late Show with David Letterman and then hitting the road with Maroon 5 for its 2010 North American tour, on top of performing on BET’s Black Girls Rock show alongside the legendary Mary J. Blige and Jill Scott, it’s no question that Miss Brown’s latest album is a brilliant product of a highly inspirational year.

You can RSVP for tonight's show at Bardot here. You can purchase tickets to The Hotel Cafe here. We will be giving away a pair of tickets to Wednesday's show as well. Participate in the contest by e-mailing contest@supergoodmusic.com or tweeting @thehotelcafe @supergoodmusic and @vvbrown.

Singer/Songwriter Robert Kelly in L.A. this Week

While Andrew W.K. gets rowdy with like-minded partyers at Echoplex and The Lonely Wild treats westsiders to their Americana at The Central SAPC, Nashville’s Robert Kelly will be pleasing fans and recruiting new ones around 11 pm tonight at The Hotel Café.

If Tuesdays are tough, or the notice isn’t enough, Kelly does it again on the 12th at On The Rox at 8:45 and on the 14th at 3Clubs at 11:45.

Kelly’s recently released debut full length, We Are Poetry, appeared at #15 on the iTunes singer/songwriter charts. And rightfully so - the album was produced by Thomas Doeve, the same man responsible for production on Andrew Belle’s The Ladder, and Doeve captures Kelly well in his arrangements.

Although singer/songwriters often elude my i-pod playlist, Kelly’s energy and sincerity invite the casual listener in. Kelly’s guitar and the accompanying instrumentation on the 10 track offering complement Kelly’s voice and lyrics well to create a solid album.

While not pushing boundaries anywhere they haven’t been, We Are Poetry delivers.

Robert Kelly will be in Los Angeles until May 22nd. You can check out more and listen to his music at http://www.myspace.com/robertkelly

Generationals in LA

The Generationals are in Los Angeles - which is making me a bit disappointed that I'm not in town. I've been into the band since I first heard "When They Fight, They Fight" and have enjoyed their latest release "Trust."

If you're in L.A. and you missed their performance last night at The Hotel Cafe, you can catch Generationals tonight (February 17th) at The Satellite (formerly Spaceland), where they are performing with The Black Apples, Minks and Shadow Shadow Shade. You can purchase tickets to that show by clicking here. The band follows that up with a performance at hipster eastside record shop Origami Vinyl on Friday February 18th. That show is at 7 pm and likely to be short, but I'm pretty sure that show is free.

Leftover Cuties (We're Talking About The Band)

With a name like Leftover Cuties, your first inclination might be to think some LA douchebag is referring to what he considers to be the remaining ladies (or males - depending on your orientation...or even your gender) at the end of the night. Clever name. I won't be the next Los Angeleno to use the term in public because, one, I'm not a douchebag, and two, someone will be saying it to refer to the band that is playing at The Hotel Cafe tonight in Hollywood, CA.

You may have heard Leftover Cuties on the opening credits of Showtimes's "The Big C" or you might have checked them out over at www.leftovercuties.com or at Casa del Mar Hotel in Santa Monica. Where you should hear them next is kicking off your December 2010 tonight. Why?

As young scenester journalist Lauren Lomma said "the lead singer is a petite but soulful woman full of 1920's Hollywood glamour and pipes comparable to Billie Holiday's. Her voice is sultry, sweet and absolute perfection. ... Leftover Cuties have the kind of sound that will take you straight back into the old days of blues and jive, smoking parlors, and speakeasies."

After seeing them cover songs like "At Last" and "Poker Face" at their weekly gig at Casa del Mar Hotel, the perfect backdrop to their old school, Boardwalk Empire feel - Lomma urged me and all SUPERGOODMUSIC readers to go see them at The Hotel Cafe. The band - despite their laid-back, humble demeanor and old school feel - employ a worldly combination of instruments to back the big bodied vocals, including trumpet, trombone, ukelele, maracas, stand up bass, drums and piano.

So, if you go, thank the Lommabot (@lomfry3) for the recommendation and cheers her with a glass of fine Scotch - SUPERGOOD's suggested drink pairing (we're also music sommeliers). If you can't make it there tonight, then check them out on www.leftovercuties.com.

Rob Laufer Review from Our Newest Writer - Samantha Ray

Walking into Los Angeles' Hotel Cafe, at the very least, I know I'm in for musicians of hunger and genuine love for the music they play. The double doors open and the blonde, twangy chick belting on stage is plain fucking cute. The crowd is generous and seems to be getting excited for the next round of sound. A quiet steadies over the scene and it's only inevitable that I notice the red hue practically screaming from the cut out bulbs hanging from wires -- and I finally see the man I've come for.

Mister Rob Laufer enters, quiet and serene. He instantly reminds me of some wearied fisherman. Sad. Sweet. Just wanting to be heard. He begins to tune his guitar on stage, and out come the other two members of his band -- and here my excitement builds as Scott Babcock pulls out an enormous viola. Ummm, YES, PLEASE. Drummer, Carl Sealove, takes a seat, and with that, Rob gives the audience a definite look of "Shhhh," and the show begins.

This bass beat comes in from their first song choice, "Broken Record," and I immediately think I can place pieces of it in some feel good Crowe flick like "Singles"... You know, something that's true and is there to teach you something. Laufer croons, "They'll always beat you til you change." Amen to that.

Laufer, a mixture of Dave Matthews' mellow tones-Eric Clapton-"Secret Garden"-style-meets the 90's, speaks: "Now we're going to get into the Excruciating Bliss part of the program," Rob's way of announcing his new album's release. To this, those in attendance give a loud and pronounced "WOO!!!," which warmed my heart to know that they were, indeed, there to support.

I hear an opening like the ocean...waves and distortion and smoothness just like I like it. "Under the sheet of ice / there's a deep blue sea...she's a child of the moon." Rob strums that guitar like his child, Babcock's drums kick into steady gear, Sealove's bass of the grandest stature hums, all in unison, to the tune of, "That's the thing about angels, they don't give a fuck really."

All ends on a marching, upbeat note:

"Sunlight / baby / it's gonna happen / ... / everything's gonna come 'round"

There's something simple and honest about this and about him, and it makes me want to put this record on in the background and type that letter that I've been meaning to send for years. And even though love is the last thing I wanna be in right now, this stuff makes it seem pretty damn appealing.
