Tonight in L.A. (October 3, 2012) - L.A.'s Concert Options for Tonight

Whether it’s the new rocking sounds of The Black Keys, fun., Foster The People or some other band your parents haven't heard of - you can hear it all with the indie rock cover sounds of Black Crystal Wolf Kids as they launch their residency at The Viper Room.

Along with BCWK – on the Sunset Strip KROQ Locals Only throws down at On The Rox with NO, Beach Party and The New Limb.   Head east and you’ll find Father John Misty and Daniel Lanois at Bootleg Theater, Eyes Lips Eyes and the debut performance of Hobart W. Fink at The Satellite (for FREE too) and the kickoff to FILTER MAGAZINE's CULTURE COLLIDE FESTIVAL!  Over at Taix lounge - you get an intimate treat from Penguin Prison, The Chevin and School of Seven Bells.  If you're not already figuring out how you're making your way to Taix - you're either busy, don't like discovering music or sipping a bit too much weak sauce today.   Or maybe you just can't handle that energy in that little room - in which case - go really east and you can relax with Conor Oberst’s melancholy rock and Jenny Lewis at Fox Theater Pomona

And, last but not least, the native Chicago homie Prob Cause is spitting at Taix for Culture Collide Festival as well.  He goes on at 10:30 and his new video Flex (above) is all over MTV.  Get hip to it.

This Should Get Packed - Jhameel at On The Rox Tonight

I saw this concert listing and had to do a double take.  Jhameel played a SUPERGOODMUSIC event at The Viper Room in October, opened for Hoodie Allen at El Rey Theatre in March and now he is playing at On The Rox?!?!?!?  Seriously.  It's as if L.A. is just oblivious to Jhameel's amazing drunk performance sessions (see below) or the Roxy talent buyers are just on that 'ish tip before the rest of their Sunset Strip brethren - because this intimate show at such a tiny venue is almost too good to be true.

The set time of 8:15 isn't that awesome - but performances in small places by kick ass musicians generally are - which is why you should bite the bullet, brave the traffic and be on Sunset Strip tonight.

Check out some drunk performances, a nice T-Pain cover and some original videos below:

RapScallions EP Release Party - TONIGHT @ ON THE ROX

Hollywood’s party rap rockers RapScallions released their self-titled EP today - October 11th. To celebrate, RapScallions will be performing at On The Rox tonight. The first 100 guests will receive a free copy of RapScallions and there is an open bar for those of you legal to drink.

The second track, Freak In The Sheets contains elements of a signature 3OH!3 or LMFAO party anthem. On the other end of the sonic spectrum, the final cut, California Brain, has a guitar line comparable to Rage Against The Machine. Perhaps that is what landed it a spot in the new XBOX and PS3 game Rocksmith, due for release later in October 2011.

RapScallions was produced by Wendy Starland (Lady Gaga) and recorded at Interscope Studios in Santa Monica. To add even more credibility to their release, the band was able to get Kevin Churko (Ozzy Osbourne, Shania Twain) and Paul Lapinski (Ludacris, Alicia Keys) to mix the EP.

The energetic SoCal group's shared the stage with artists like Fishbone, Wu Tang Clan, Mike Posner, performed at The Toronto Film Festival and the official NBA All-Star Block Party and even played at VH1's Save The Music. Clearly, someone is looking out for them or their is some industry darling child in the group - possibly both. I have no idea if the act is worthy of the hype - so I will be at ON THE ROX tonight to judge for myself.

With free booze, a rising local artist and DJ Luca Buassi spinning - it should be, at the very least, worth checking out.

Singer/Songwriter Robert Kelly in L.A. this Week

While Andrew W.K. gets rowdy with like-minded partyers at Echoplex and The Lonely Wild treats westsiders to their Americana at The Central SAPC, Nashville’s Robert Kelly will be pleasing fans and recruiting new ones around 11 pm tonight at The Hotel Café.

If Tuesdays are tough, or the notice isn’t enough, Kelly does it again on the 12th at On The Rox at 8:45 and on the 14th at 3Clubs at 11:45.

Kelly’s recently released debut full length, We Are Poetry, appeared at #15 on the iTunes singer/songwriter charts. And rightfully so - the album was produced by Thomas Doeve, the same man responsible for production on Andrew Belle’s The Ladder, and Doeve captures Kelly well in his arrangements.

Although singer/songwriters often elude my i-pod playlist, Kelly’s energy and sincerity invite the casual listener in. Kelly’s guitar and the accompanying instrumentation on the 10 track offering complement Kelly’s voice and lyrics well to create a solid album.

While not pushing boundaries anywhere they haven’t been, We Are Poetry delivers.

Robert Kelly will be in Los Angeles until May 22nd. You can check out more and listen to his music at http://www.myspace.com/robertkelly
