Mind The Gap Release Catchy "Hero"/Play The Roxy

The next great (currently below the radar) LA quartet that I think is going to pop off in a SUPERGOOD way is Mind The Gap. As evidenced by their new single "Hero" - they capture the fusion of electronic dance in a way that feels like an indie ballad is being mashed up with a slamming house track by your favorite DJ. Hero even feels like A-Trak's remix of Yeah Yeah Yeah's "Heads Will Roll"...except its an original composition. And a catchy one at that. With recently landed synchs in "You're Next" and a forthcoming documentary tentatively titled "Generation Iron" - plus spots on Lifetime and other reality programming - it appears they have a penchant for songwriting and it's possible you may have even already been exposed to MTG.

If you haven't - August 30th at The Roxy is your chance. With a set scheduled for 9 p.m. in a supporting slot for Work Drugs - I can promise they'll unleash at least a half hour of power that will probably leave your feet sore, your heart racing and have you chanting at least one of their hooks. If you haven't heard or seen this train coming - make sure you Mind The Gap, because they've arrived. Get your tickets for tonight's show here!

Moderat + Tokimonsta = Thursday Turn Up

Club Nokia and Los Angelenos get a special treat tonight when Moderat - the esteemed collaboration of Modoselektor and Apparat - unleashes that good sort of filth as Thursday turns to Friday.  The collab does not tour often - so electronic music aficionados take note.

The late addition of Tokimonsta only makes the bill significantly better --- and makes the decision to not go that much more ignorant.  Don't miss the queen of electronic beats (TOKiMONSTA), where she is likely to perform a handful of tracks from her Ultra release "Half Shadows."  It's rare that such high quality musicianship and production skills packs a bill in Los Angeles and tickets are still available day of --- but they are, and for all ages.

Doors are at 9 and Patricio will be first to the decks.   Follow this link if you want to ensure you're in the building when the music drops.

Kiev Residency at Bootleg

Quasi-local (OC and Long Beach) act Kiev enjoy the third night of their stellar residency this Monday night at Bootleg. Their Radiohead meets My Morning Jacket meets Medeski Martin & Wood sound recalls all things that are good about music, without any of the pop, begging to be discovered, drivel. These guys make music they like - and they appear to have fun doing it too. Celebrate their latest projects at Bootleg tonight with Miya Folick, The Steelwells, MYPET and DJ Kat Corbett! And, its FREE!

LocAl fLAvor: Breakfast "True Love Waits"

Fierce, beautiful, well-orchestrated all aptly describe Breakfast's "True Love Waits" - but nothing does it justice like the song itself.  The deeply emotional ballad belted by the beautiful Andrea Adolph is enhanced by dramatic accordion and perfectly peppered ivory and ebony.

The clap breakdown is charming and cute, as is these seemingly young artists opining about how true love waits.  Does it?

Guitar Center's Get Out of the Garage Contest

GOOTG Launch Artwork

Guitar Center launched an amazing artist discovery program, Get Out of the Garage, a few weeks ago – complete with the opportunity of a lifetime. What’s that opportunity exactly?

In exchange for submitting your music and videos and engaging your fan base – an artist or band can win the opportunity to record an EP at Converse Rubber Tracks Studios, collaborate with writer/producer Dev Hynes (Florence and the Machine, Chemical Brothers, Solange Knowles, etc.) and take stage at The Fader Fort during SXSW 2014! Did I mention the $25,000 in cash, gear from Fender, Vox and Martin Shure, and digital distribution through Tunecore too?

In tune with Guitar Center’s service of supporting artists worldwide, the new discovery program will provide one lucky unsigned artist with a giant platform for growth and development. “Guitar Center’s mission is to support musicians – whether by outfitting artists with top-of-the-line gear and impeccable style or providing a platform to share their music with large and influential audiences,” said Maria Brown, Manager of Music and Entertainment Marketing for Guitar Center. “We are excited to have a unique and fresh talent like Dev on board who has so much to offer artists in the independent music space. We couldn’t be happier with the collaborative aspect of this program.”

Guitar Center’s unique approach to engaging the artist community not only benefits artists, but also probably contributes to Guitar Center being the world’s largest retailer of musical instruments.  By collaborating with Converse and Rubber Tracks Studios – this program affords the winner the chance to record at a state of the art recording facility at no cost where their creative spirit will hopefully shine.

So what are you waiting for? To Submit Your Music for Get Out of the Garage visit: http://www.guitarcenter.com/getoutofthegarage

Los Angeles Tonight (August 7, 2013)

It's a night for the left of center concert bills and line-ups - with some special bills at Hollywood Palladium, Hollywood Bowl and The Roxy.

First and foremost, Mac Miller brings his traveling party to Hollywood Palladium along with Action Bronson, Chance The Rapper, The Internet and Vince Staples. If acid rap is your thing, or you can't get enough of Mac and Action's east coast flavor - the Sunset Blvd. venue is where you should be.

If rock is whats moves you - head further west to The Roxy for Grimy Goods party featuring The Dead Ships, Death Hymn Number 9, Death Valley Girls and a DJ Set from adult film star April O'Neil. It's only $5 at the door - and we also have some tickets to give away, so hit us up at contest@supergoodmusic.com.

The weirdest show of the night though probably will be MC Chris at Troubadour. The artist also known as MC Pee Pants and famous for high-pitched Aqua Teen Hunger Force raps brings Dr. Awkward, Jesse Dangerously and Tribe One along with him to drop some serious nerdcore rhymes and backpacker raps.

Other notable shows include Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers at Hollywood Bowl along with Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Madeliene Peyroux. I also like the weekly Dub Club at Echoplex with Tribe of Kings and Low End Theory at Airliner, which gets a visit from Exile, Fashawn and Matthewdavid.

  • Yellowbirds, Eric D. Johnson @ Bootleg Bar

  • Steve Martin, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Madeleine Peyroux @ Hollywood Bowl

  • Whiskey Shivers, Moonsville Collective, Sam Outlaw, Wild Child @ Detroit Bar

  • Savoir Adore, Only You, Fever The Ghost @ The Echo

  • Mac Miller, Action Bronson, Chance The Rapper, The Internet, Vince Staples @ Hollywood Palladium

  • Cayucas @ Space 15 Twenty (FREE)

  • MC Chris, Dr. Awkward, Jesse Dangerously, Tribe One @ Troubadour

  • The Dead Ships, Death Hymn Number 9, Death Valley Girls, April O'Neil (DJ Set) @ The Roxy

  • Lightning Dust @ Constellation Room

  • Exile, Fashawn, Matthewdavid, Kyo Sakurai @ Low End Theory

Cuz's Corner Ep. 4 - The Mowglis

As spud says, these dudes are "the homies." For about a year, unbeknownst to the Mowglis and myself, we were neighbors. Like, I knew they were people, and I knew they lived down the block. I just didn't know that they were The Mowglis and they didn't know that I had a Jam Van.

They had a robot statue in their front yard made out of guitars and a small television. It was recently removed. Shame on the new tenant for that. When The Mowglis lived their they used to hang signs from a tree branch that jutted out onto Broadway Ave. and alerted folks to their backyard performances. So I'd stumbled upon parties at their pad, unfortunately never caught any music. I did however know a chick that fell off of their porch at one of the shindigs. Maybe they saw her fall, I dunno, she claimed she snuck out of there real quick-like and wasn't seen. My dog, The RZA, played with their dog, Abby, in the street one day. He's white and fluffy, she's black and fluffy. On one of these fluff-head encounters guitarist Josh Hogan and I introduced ourselves. My take away from that meeting was that he was a nice dude, that's it, never occurred that we'd be seeing eachother again in a parking lot about a year later and he'd be with seven of his friends, and I'd be with a few of mine, and we'd hang out, and I'd finally get to hear them play their "love rock."

That's all to say that they are indeed the homies. They kicked it again with us at Bonnaroo, even filmed another Jam Van session in between beers. That's coming out tomorrow.  For now we have this memory from the Roxy, the first time they ever met Spud. He's now the hood's biggest Mowglis fan, and they're now touring the country relentlessly spreading the love. I just hope they still have time to make robot statues.

The Roots hold a soft place in founder Brandon Dorsky's SUPERGOOD heart.  Having seen them upwards of 40 times - they capture a special place a top the list of bands he's seen most.  Their acceptance of a spot on Jimmy Fallon's late night program meant less touring than their former 200+ shows a year - but hey, the world now gets the treat of seeing them every night - and that is a net positive.

Earlier this week, they really impressed when Robin Thicke joined the legendary Roots crew and Mr. Fallon for a special rendition of "Blurred Lines" with classroom instruments.   Which version do you prefer?  The video might not be as sexy as the scandalous original, but check it out and decide for yourself.

Los Angeles Tonight (August 1, 2013)

Wake up, wake up, it's the first of the month...and there is definitely some hip-hop in town tonight.   Emerging acts Casey Veggies and Travi$ Scott take over El Rey Theatre for a sure-to-be raucous night of fun and rhymes.  Across town - the epic duo of El-P and Killer Mike ride their Run The Jewels tour to the eastside with a special invitation only beer tasting of the Run The Jewels brew from Goose Island followed by a performance at Echoplex.

We have tickets to give away to that show - plus extras for the esteemed Donna The Buffalo at The Mint where she is supported by supergood bluesy throwback rockers Ivory Deville.   One of the members of ID even has a beard reminiscent of ZZ Top, who coincidentally plays the Pacific Amphitheater tonight.   Another rock legend, Joan Jett, will be celebrated on the Sunset Strip as Sunset Strip Music Festival 2013 kicks off at House of Blues.

Outdoor concerts are in abundance too - with Xavier Rudd at Santa Monica Pier, Boogaloo Assassins at Mile Square Regional Park, Jeffrey Broussard at Levitt Pavilion in Pasadena and The Rebel Light rocking Grand Park downtown.  For more shows - see the list below!  To win tickets to one of our contests email contest@supergoodmusic.com or check out our giveaways page for other ways to win.
