Tuesday is a no-brainer decision for me - The 88 and The French Semester at Spaceland. LA indie-rock at its finest - don't miss it! If you're not feeling that vibe, but still want some rock, maybe check out The Duke Spirit and Band of Skulls at El Rey. Once TFS and 88s call it a night, I am going to swing by Cinespace for DIMMAK Tuesdays because it is Them Jeans' birthday this week. Anytime there is a bday for a member of their crew, I'm eager to be at Cinespace to see what madness might unfold.
Wednesday - the whole Supergood family will be at Dakota LIve Music Lounge for SUPERGOODMUSIC Presents night featuring Tic Tic Boom!, We Should Be Dead, Cody Hudock and Helicopter Rounds. Come show your love for some of LA's rising indie artists and stay for the Irish headliners! (If you are going to NIN and Mew - I totally understand why you won't be at Dakota).
Each band has a limited discounted VIP guest list - e-mail the bands at their respective pages to get on the cheaper list.
Hollywood is where you will find me on Thursday - New Orleans keys legend John "Papa" Gros rolls into town on his boogaloo funk train with his band Papa Grows Funk. They will be performing at The Knitting Factory, which is closing its doors in late October, and Big Organ Trio - a great crew making some waves in the jam scene - will be lending their support. If you like keys, and especially if you like Hammond B3s, this is where you want to be. If the keys jam doesn't go all night, or I'm feeling like rolling out with the fabulous crew - I might drop by Avalon for Tigerheat's Whitney Houston CD Release Event. Other good options are Israel Vibration and the Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad at Key Club and Peanut Butter Wolf at Club 149.
Friday I think the best music in town is a little more low key. I'm talking about Jon Brion at Largo - which is always exceptional music, often with unique surprises. Another quality, but low key option, is John Williams with LA Phil at the Hollywood Bowl. If you haven't been to the Bowl yet, this might be a good opportunity to go.
Saturday, I will unfortunately be out of town. I wish I was here because Felix Da Housecat is spinning Avalon (love Felix), Erykah Badu and Mos Def are bringing their awe inspiring performances to the Hollywood Palladium and Nine Inch Nails is going to rock The Wiltern. Not to mention that all day long in Chinatown will be FYF Fest featuring a host of respectable musicians.
On Sunday, there are rumors of an unconfirmed Nine Inch Nails performance at Echoplex circulating. I've seen a few posts claiming NIN is playing Echoplex, but no reputable source has confirmed it. If you are a NIN fan, I might just try and go to Echoplex's Smiths & Morrisey night because you just never know what could happen at the esteemed venue.
Looking ahead this month, you can start getting excited for Saint Motel all month at Spaceland for the FREE Monday night residency. Their first performance is on September 7th, the eve of their album release. Check out their music here - "Do Everything Now" has been high on my playlist for the last two weeks.
