Hey. First off, I wanted to thank all of you who made kind comments about me in relation to the American Lawyer article picked up by Above The Law last week – some of them were absolutely hilarious. (If any of you are the anonymous commenter who wrote “Brandon is allergic to everything but music. Seriously.” please let me know – that was my favorite one). I also really appreciate all of you who posted links to my blog as I am always trying to attract new readers.
Speaking of the blog/site, last week I finally got around to making some changes to the SUPERGOODMUSIC website – including some press links, new picture, live twitter feed and an opportunity for others to sign up for the CONCERT BLAST on the website itself. Hopefully you notice some of the changes and start frequenting the website more…also, pass the word along to your friends and industry peeps. As a result of all the website updating, I did not go out to see as much music as I normally do. Monday kicked off Local Natives month long residency at Spaceland, Tuesday I soaked in two great shows – Rebelution at The Roxy and Kesha at Cinespace (no review on Kesha – but needless to say she was foxy with moxie and she may just be all over the radio really soon). Thursday brought me over to echo for Quintron and Miss Pussycat. You can reviews of the shows on my previous posts.
The weekend slowed up a bit for me, in part because many of my concert going crew was in Chicago for Lolla (SUPERGOODMUSIC had an on the scene reporter – look for a blog post later in the week summing up the experience). Despite feeling sorry for myself because I was not in Chi City, Saturday I had the privilege of hanging with Local Natives, Saint Motel and Lindsey Cook of MySpace Records over in Silverlake for some late night laughs and good times. Thankfully I made the decision at the last minute to not go to HARDFEST, which apparently did not pop off as expected, but rather was shut down by Inglewood police after people started jumping from the balcony to the floor level. As usual, you’ll find the CONCERT BLAST below, which includes all of LA’s important concert information for the next week. ON THE RADAR was updated with a few shows as well. You’ll find my recommendations below – if I have taken the time out to discuss the show in more detail, I am most likely going. If you just want to go straight to the list - I’ve also bolded those artists that I think are my top picks for any particular date.
Just a heads up - several SUPERGOODMUSIC artists have shows coming up in late August/early September – so make sure you make it out to see them and show your support – new SGM artist - Tic Tic Boom! is playing Tuesday August 11th at Spaceland before embarking on a Pacific Northwest tour. When they return to LA – they will be playing the Dakota Live Music Lounge with We Should Be Dead on September 2nd. The French Semester will be performing on Sunday at the Luxury Wafers session – which should be available for download/purchase on i-tunes shortly thereafter. Next Friday, the quintet will be playing at echo with Hockey, who is fresh off of their electricity-less (power went out during the set) performance at Lollapoolooza.
SUPERGOOD RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK
On Monday, I’m dropping by Hunnypot unlimited to give a shout out to my homies John Anderson, PJ Bloom and DJ Stacee Coleman – and hear a few tunes from The Robotanists, one of LA’s active indie bands as of late. From there – I plan on scooting out to the east side and running all over town to catch a ton of great FREE MUSIC – first on my list is The Growlers and Tijuana Panthers at echo. I’m definitely digging on TP’s “Creature” and “Redheaded Girl” –you can check out both here - http://www.myspace.com/tijuanapanthers. From there, if I have time, I’ll drop in to see new supergood friends Local Natives continue to make bigger splashes in the scene. FYI, both The Growlers and Local Natives will be playing each Monday at those respective venues for the rest of the month.
On Tuesday, I will be at Spaceland for the last minute scheduled performance of Tic Tic Boom! TTB is a SUPERGOODMUSIC artist and are fresh out of the studio having just completed initial work on their first full length LP. Mixing and mastering is currently in the works – but come check them play some of their new tunes live in LA for the first time. There will be a whole bunch of “debuts” that I’m sure you don’t want to miss. After Spaceland, unless TTB closes the house down, I will be heading to Cinespace for DIMMAK Tuesdays – this week Data and Esser will both be performing.
Wednesday I am amped up for the N.A.S.A. performance at El Rey. Rumors are circulating about all sorts of cameo alleged cameo appearances (someone, albeit an unreliable source, said Kanye might be there). Having seen them at Coachella in April, I’m expecting just about anything – from aliens in puppet suits to a host of unexpected guests. If NASA isn’t your thing – then check out Sarah Silverman at Largo if you want to laugh your ass of or Avi Buffalo and The Parson Redheads if you want a healthy serving of rising LA indie-rock.
Thursday I may have to take the night off as I have plans to be on some young professionals/entrepreneurs twilight yacht cruise that is complete with appetizers and all you can drink. If I fail to make the connections I’m hoping to make – I will be jetting over to Key Club around 10:30 to see Eric Krasno (of Soulive) and Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk. Whether I make it or not – if you like funk that is highlighted by exceptional musicianship – Key Club is the place to be. If you don’t like funk – but want to put on your dancing shoes – maybe head down the block to the Hollywood Jerkin Tour at The Roxy (The Pack was just added after canceling their show at The Roxy on August 2nd).
Friday, SUPERGOODMUSIC plans on being all over Hollywood and the east side as there are a host of good concert events I’d like to show up to. A strong line-up of indie music will grace the stage at Echoplex – including Henry Clay People returning from Troubadour, with support from Marvelous Toy amongst others. Considering I like to party aggressively on Friday nights – I will head from the indie party to The Knitting Factory to catch some of Immortal Technique’s politically inspired flow and then to Avalon to dance until the sun comes up with members of Does It Offend You, Yeah.
Saturday it is eastside again – for SUPERGOODMUSIC artist The French Semester’s small, intimate warm-up show at Pehrspace. They will be honing their chops for their radio performance at Luxury Wafers the following day and getting prepared to play with Hockey at Echo the following weekend. From Pehrspace, I plan on making the routine Saturday night stop at echo/echoplex for what appears to be a stellar night of funky soul, world and hip-hop music as Quantic is playing with Nu-Mark and J.Rocc at echoplex and Funky Sole will be going strong upstairs.
Sunday – as mentioned, I’ll be at The French Semester’s Luxury Wafers session. If I’m feeling the energy, I’ll stop by Nite Jewel at echo.
