CONCERT BLAST August 3rd - August 9th

This CONCERT BLAST ™ takes you through the first full week of August (from today until Sunday August 9th) and is packed full of lots of opportunities to see great music.  ON THE RADAR received some extensive updates – with lots of great new adds at Echo (French Semester, Hockey), The Troubadour (Portugal. The Man, Hockey, Wax Tailor) and The Roxy (Mayer Hawthorne, Foreign Exchange).

In a bit of related news – I received a great write-up in the August edition of American Lawyer regarding what it is that I am doing with SUPERGOODMUSIC.  Read the article here - http://www.law.com/jsp/tal/PubArticleTAL.jsp?id=1202432565393&After_the_Layoffs=&src=EMC-Email&et=editorial&bu=The%20American%20Lawyer&pt=Am%20Law%20Daily&cn=AmLaw_LitigationDaily_20090803&kw=After%20the%20Layoffs. If you have any friends or colleagues who could benefit from my services – feel free to give them a referral.  Additionally, in additional work/related news, I recently became involved with seeking sponsors for the Hollywood Reporter/Billboard Film and TV Music Conference Official After Party thrown by Hunnypot Unlimited.  The party, which hosts some of the most influential individuals in the Film and TV Music business, takes place on Thursday October 29, 2009.  If you or a colleague would have any interest in being a sponsor of the event, please contact me at brandon@supergoodmusic.com or sponsorshipathunnypot@gmail.com.

For those of you who are new readers – artists and events that appear in the CONCERT BLAST in bold are ones that I am recommending.  If I’ve taken additional time to describe the music or event – that means I am just endorsing it more than others that I have bolded on that particular date.  The list is posted each week on SUPERGOODMUSIC, along with additional blogs and music content.  The site is constantly in development – so check frequently to see if anything new is going on.

If you want to cut straight to the chase, scroll down to the CONCERT BLAST.  If you’d like my impressions from last week, recommendations of what’s coming up, and a look at the latest unofficial SUPERGOODMUSIC mixtape  – read on….

Impressions and Recommendations

Even a week later, I am still going crazy over the Kid Cudi and B.o.B. show!  I bought the hypeman’s CD (Pastor Tre) – and despite having not even listened to it yet – that simple reality is sticking in my head.  I rocked B.o.B. vs. Bobby Rae mix tape all week and I’m straight love-love-loving it.  It is arguably better than ‘A Kid Named Cudi’ and the anthems on the mixtape are the same gems from his performance – “Satellite” being my favorite.  I must’ve listened to that song at least 4 times a day all week long.  You can see Kid Cudi perform this week on Saturday August 8th with Jay-Z, LMFAO, Lil Jon and many others at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

Last Monday, I rocked out at Hunnypot Unlimited’s every-other-Monday internet radio broadcast – and had the pleasure of hearing Santa Barbara’s own Rebelution, a young soulful reggae group that is about to embark on a 3 month national tour - kicking off with a record release show at The Roxy on Tuesday August 4th.  They jammed out a few cuts from their record and had the insider, standing room only crowd getting down to to their dub grooves.  Rebelution’s sound, even in the tight knit space, was charming and organic.  I look forward to seeing them in a larger space that is more conducive to a live performance.  Check for Rebelution’s new album out Tuesday, as well as their concert the same day at The Roxy.

Having missed their performance at Spaceland last Monday, I was happy to see Ebony Bones make a surprise appearance for DIMMAK Tuesdays at Cinespace.  The 7 piece (I think) band – with their interesting stage apparel and funky make-up – really brought the energy to Hollywood Blvd. with their unexpected live performance.  I had high expectations, and the wild and sassy Miss Ebony Bones did not disappoint me at all.  I don’t believe their album is available in the states yet – but once it is, you should cop it.  Don’t sleep on these Brits.

Wednesday brought me to Bedouin Soundclash at The Roxy.  I’d never seen the dub-soul-ska band before – and I have to say it felt like I went back to the 90s the way the house was getting down to their ska-ish vibe.  The mostly early 30 something crowd knew most of the lyrics, pumped their fist and displayed genuine love for the band from up North (they’re Canadian).  Rootbeer and Pigeon John lent support – and I got to see them during the encore – but unfortunately missed their opening set.

With close friends from high-school in town for the weekend, my music week ended on Friday night at International Pop Overthrow Festival at The Knitting Factory – for the rising, and awesome, The French Semester, and a hot young indie-pop band from across the pond, We Should Be Dead.  The bands on the ball spanned several genres and had differing degrees of palatability – but these two, the headliners, really played well.  We Should Be Dead brought an energy that had been lacking to the standing, toe tapping- but not dancing crowd, when their lead vocalist jumped into the crowd to do her vocals and amp up the party.  The mixed sex band seemed to have a good chemistry and a thirst for keeping things animated.  You can catch We Should Be Dead around Los Angeles over the next few months, including on the East Side at Spaceland on August 18th and on the West Side of town at Dakota Live Music Lounge on September 2nd.  The French Semester, although not nearly as animated in the crowd interaction category, were animated on the tiny Alterknit stage.  Packing their new 5 piece arrangement into the space was tight – but they made the best of it – impressing the crowd with their jazzed up arrangement of “Large Bouquet” and touching a chord with some of the elder members of the crowd with their rendition of the oldie but goodie “Sugar Sugar” by the Archies.

Cutting to this week – and what is looking good.  Monday, if you are trying to spend some money to see music, I’d have to go with Gomez at The Wiltern.  I saw these British rockers at Bonnaroo and was very impressed with their unity as a band.   They took their performance places I didn’t expect and I found it genuinely enjoyable.  Considering I’ve seen them (and considering that I’m operating on a self-employed blogger’s budget), you’re much more likely to catch me at the Local Natives residency kick-off show at Spaceland.  With support from likewise local indie band, The Union Line, the residency should go off without a hitch.

Tuesday is hitting heavy on good music – with the previously mentioned Rebelution record release show at The Roxy.  There is also Lykke Li and Deadly Syndrome, who did some of the music in the soon to be available feature-length documentary Last Cup: Road to the World Series of Beer Pong, at The Wiltern and also downtown you’ll find The Ting Tings at Club Nokia, with support from the always fun and quirky Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head.

Wednesday I didn’t see too much to rave about other than Dwele at Key Club.  This crooner – who occasionally reminds of D’Angelo – is sure to lay down some smooth sultry R&B tunes for the audience on Wednesday night.  If I am picking one night this week not to go out – Wednesday is probably it…

Thursday I’m not insane for either – but, there are a few up and comers I wouldn’t mind checking out.  Quintron and Miss Pussycat, hailing all the way from New Orleans, LA will be bringing their boogaloo punk to Echo – I kind of just want to go because their music is way different than anything I’m hearing recently and it incorporates Hammond B3 organ and boogaloo in an indie palatable way.  I can only imagine what the two step is going to be like in that room on Thursday.  For indie-rockers and east-siders who might not love the B3 – I’d suggest checking out another installment of International Pop Overthrow at The Knitting Factory because rising locals The Monthlies, who played SXSW, will be performing, along with several other rising indie acts.  If you are not an east-sider or don’t want to brave the new sound that is boogaloo punk – you might check out Who’s Bad – the allegedly good Michael Jackson cover band playing at the House of Blues – Sunset Strip.

Friday and Saturday bring as a handful of electronic music to town, as well as two power packed hip-hop events and a couple great spot off shows.  Friday you can go see a Busy P spinning with some friends at 740 Club – for what is fast becoming a popular Friday night dance party.  If you’re already going to see him on Saturday at The Forum, than I might suggest bringing your dancing shows to the Henry Fonda Theater to see Love Grenades and Elefant.  Although the show was just recently announced – I’m confident it will draw some good attendance from a hip crowd, including me.  If electronic isn’t your bag or you really just love some good soulful funk – then try and get into the taping of the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson to catch one of my personal favorite artists/groups, Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings.

Saturday you might already have plans given the volume of full slate music events in town including Summerfest at The Forum featuring Chromeo, Crystal Castles, Rye Rye, A-Trak, Tiga, Amanda Blank, The Bloody Beetroots and more.  While these events typically draw a younger than I’d prefer crowd (read – all ages) – I’m most likely going to brave the youth simply because Amanda Blank, Rye Rye, Tiga and The Bloody Beetroots are so hot right now.  Plus – Chromeo and Crystal Castles always deliver and never disappoint!  If this event were not in town, then I probably would have given a bit more consideration to Rock The Bells at San Manuel Amphitheatre because The Roots are popping away from Jimmy Fallon as part of the event, Big Boi is going to perform solo and Reflection Eternal will be reuniting on stage.  Throw in rising hip-hop party group The Knux, the slow drawl flow of K’Naan and the lyrical skills of Murs, Evidence, Eyedea and Abilities and you’ve got a kick ass hip-hop line-up.  and Reflection Eternal.  The Jay-Z, Kid Cudi and LMFAO at Honda Center is also enticing – but, honestly, there is no way that Cudi or LMFAO could eclipse their performances that I witnessed in July – so avoiding this show is a no-brainer for me (if you didn’t get to see them – I highly recommend their respective performances).

If all day and night music events are not attractive to you (i.e. – you play it more low key on the weekend) – then I’d suggest going to Largo to see Nels Cline and Jon Brion.  I can guarantee beautiful music – what I can’t guarantee is that you’ll whip out your dancing shoes.

Sunday – given the extreme dosage of music LA will be receiving on Saturday – will most likely be a day off for me.  But, if you are inclined to be a weekend warrior – or you just prefer to wait until Sunday to get your weeks dosage of music – I would suggest either Links at Cinespace or Warpaint at Spaceland.

My last recommendation is that you check out the music and artists on the most recent unofficial SUPERGOODMUSIC mixtape – Supafresh Vol. 3.  The track list is as follows:

You can cop the mixtape by contacting me directly for unofficial methods of obtaining a copy (I don’t sell it and I don’t post it for download or streaming because I am not the copyright owner), by going to hypem.com, rcrdlbl.com and various other music posting sites and searching to download the tracks, or by going to good old i-tunes and other digital retailers to pay for the tracks individually.  If you are interested in the tracks/artists for more than just listening purposes – (i.e. you want to synch the music to something, you want the artist(s) to play your next party, you want to interview the artist(s)) I represent the artists in bold and italics in some way, shape or form.

Enjoy.
