Tonight in L.A. (October 23, 2012)

Tuesday night brings a lot of artists that your parents haven’t heard of – but hopefully you have.  Who am I talking about?

Rising female stars Rita Ora and Iggy Azalea are joined by Havana Brown at Yost Theater in the O.C.; KROQ Locals Only recruits MNDR to join a retooled Shiny Toy Guns at The Echoplex and just around the corner Jhameel, who is now a Los Angeleno, plays at Silverlake Lounge.   The likes of Etienne De Crecy and Flume at Dim Mak Studios won’t disappoint for those that like to dace either.

We also have a few pairs of tickets to give away to Helmet and Toadies at The House of Blues on Sunset tonight - so shout us out on twitter or email us at contest@supergoodmusic.com to get in on the action.   And, of course, remember that Walk The Moon and Gold Fields contest from yesterday's Concert Blast - we still have some tickets to give away to that Thursday performance sponsored by LogiTech - so don't sleep....

Y Luv at Silverlake Lounge (By Converse Rockstar)

Last night probably constitutes one of the strangest shows I have ever been to. Of course, that was mostly because of the crowd rather than the band.

When I arrived at the venue just before the first opening band started, there must have been no more than five people there. Then, when Metal Mother played, the crowd swelled a little bigger (about 30 people). And that's when the strangest thing happened - just before Y Luv took the stage, most of the crowd left.

Even if that crowd couldn't appreciate good music, I'm glad I was there to enjoy the show.

The set was short, but sweet. After all, Y Luv only has one EP out. But even with the small crowd, they certainly had fun playing and they did it with as much energy as if they were playing in front of a packed venue. And don't let the fact that the crowd was small deter you from listening to Y Luv's music or seeing them live.

While they seemed to have some problems with the keyboards, they took on a show-must-go-on attitude and powered through the set, enjoying every minute that they were on stage. Lead singer Freddy Janney has a unique, raspy voice that gave the otherwise smooth music an interesting edge. While Y Luv still has a little ways to go before they become the seasoned live performers that I know they are capable of becoming, they have more skill and potential than a lot of world-famous bands I have seen in the past.

The set ended with "Never Touch The Ground," my favorite song from Y Luv. It's a beautiful and infectious and it was a perfect ending to the set. You can listen to the song below:

Make sure to buy Y Luv's EP, How Chill Can You Let Go, and check out their music and more info about them at their site.

Indie Music on A Stoner Holiday

If you're hip to cannabis culture, you'd know today is a holiday for the avid weed smoker. You might also know that Slightly Stoopid is playing at Greek Theatre tonight, where they are joined by Bad Brains, Barrington Levy and special guests Karl Denson, Del Tha Funky Homosapien and Don Carlos. This line-up is like a mini-festival and I'm sure it will be some stanky funky 'ish (both audibly and odorously).

If you can't foot the bill for that, or you just want to kick it low key with the Stoopid boys post show - El Cid is hosting the after party, where they will be showing Reefer Madness and have performances from Stonefeather and The Originalites amongst others.

There are plenty of musicians elsewhere around town, including ones that embrace the bottle over the cheeba. You could share a drink with some rising locals at any eastside indie enclave - and I plan on doing just that at Silverlake Lounge with Risers at 9:15, as well as with Tic Tic Boom! at Bootleg at 11:30. I like both acts songwriting a lot - Tic Tic Boom!'s catchy "Just Friends" on Locals Only has caught my ear (as well as their latest "Bees") and Risers sort of wowed me at The Satellite last week with their performance of Devil's Game. Check that out here -

Risers are joined by Aerial Stereo (8:30), Handshakes (10), Mile Greene (10:45) and Y Luv (11:30); Tic Tic Boom! are joined by Old Scholar (10:30) and Tyler Steele & The Helping Thieves (9:30) as well as I Promote Good Bands and Zoomania Music crews.

Hope to see you out tonight. New Los Angeles Concert Blast published tomorrow!
