I saw Ditch at Area on Friday night and not only would I not recommend his album “Public Intoxication,” I would question the musical taste of anyone I know who purchases it. Thankfully – I skipped out of Area and made my way to The Roxy to catch the end of an excellent performance by the Brazilian beauty, Ceu. She rocked it with stellar material from her first album, as well as some cuts from the recently released, and also very good, Vagarosa. From The Roxy, I popped over to Purple Lounge at The Standard to check out Hey Champ spin for an hour. They played a blend of early 90’s hip-hop, electro-pop and Michael Jackson that the attractive, guest-list only crowd enjoyed.
Saturday brought a host of musical treats around town – and I elected to go check out BLOOMFEST 2009, sponsored by Jon Hershfield’s ISGOOD Music. The event took place downtown in the art’s district on Traction, in the middle of the street, across from Zip Fusion’s downtown location. Featuring an eclectic mix of music including The French Semester, The Seasons and The Robotanists – hipsters, artists and lucky passer-bys got a dosage of undiscovered talent at it’s finest. The French Semester treated the crowd to a debut song - a cover of The Archies "Sugar Sugar" - the whole crowd got down - kids were running around dancing to the music, band-aids were tapping their feet in the shade, 20 and 30-somethings were watching from the beer garden – or making their way to the corner to the sausage and primo-beer joint – Wurstkuche. The event had all the right components, including some street side vending by the incredible traveling Cool Haus ice cream truck.
Sunday, I took some well-deserved respite in anticipation of a busy week of music all over town.
