It's Monday of the last holiday shopping week - which means malls will be madness, racks will be thinning and it is time to find a diamond in the rough on your present quest.  Tonight - Flavorpill, Sony and Iheartcomix give you that chance at a special Sony@310 Sessions event hosted at the Westfield Century City Sony Store.  

DJ Mario Cotto of KCRW will be spinning some soundscapes as well the uber hip YACHT while IHC hosts and Pink Taco serves up free tacos and margaritas.  Kind of sounds like a little holiday party if you ask me.  And to make it even better - the first 25 people get free t-shirts with art designed by Geoff Mcfetridge.  Not convinced?  Those t-shirts are limited edition.  They are that diamond in the rough present you've been looking for (as is the party).

Tonight in L.A. (November 12, 2012)

Start your Monday off right with some good music - whether that's the solid sounds of It's A School Night as they bring in some Los Angeles based acts to celebrate some EP releases (DWNTWN, The Rebel Light) or its the second installment of some eastside residency. 

In terms of residencies - the SUPERGOOD selection goes to The Record Company at The Satellite.  This week they are being presented by Jam In The Van, who will be parked outside the venue, and will also be joined by the bluesy roots vibes of The Dustbowl Revival, The Nervous Wreckords and KCRW personalities Jason Kramer and CJ Valida.  Other resident acts include In The Valley Below at Bootleg and Dream Panther at The Echoplex.





If you're hitting up Mumford and Sons and Dawes at Hollywood Bowl - your after party stop should probably be Bardot.   AM from the duo of Shawn Lee & AM spins under his lesser known moniker George Ben Sun while Sky Ferreira and the aforementioned The Rebel Light and DWNTWN drop some sets on the Hollywood crowd.  Per usual - Chris Douridas will also be providing some of the sonic landscape.

Tonight in L.A. (October 27, 2012)

If you're not already tired of your costume or too hung over to move - Halloween themed parties are all the rage again tonight - and dance-a-thons are in no shortage.  

No matter what side of town you're on - there is someone pushing a few buttons to keep your feet moving.  On The westside, those buttons are pushed courtesy of Goldroom, Yuksek, Steffi Graf and Jamuel St. Jones at The Central SAPC.  If you missed their show on Thursday at The Echo/Echoplex, tonight's your chance to correct that mistake at this Audio Absinthe presents event.  You can  buy tickets here too.  





O.C'ers shouldn't come up to the beach though - I'd advise sticking down by Detroit Bar for Flight Facilities and Fred Falke, unless, of course, you were already going downtown to Club Nokia to see Flight Facilities open for The Presets.   Benny Benassi, Congorock and Pink is Punk also get heavy downtown at Exchange LA and Belasco Theater hosts a haunted mansion with $5,000 in cash prizes for costumes.  







Take a trip up the 101 and contine to Halloween BOOootie LA at Echoplex or try Hollywood's Avalon to dance wee into the morning with Erick Morillo or with Supreme Team presenting DJ Felli Fel and Will.i.am at Supperclub.  Its a potentially destination for the hip-hop fans spilling out of the sold out Macklemore & Ryan Lewis show at Fonda Theatre (Note, if anyone can find Macklemore's threads from this video, aka his jacket, I kind of want that to be the "cold ass honky" as my Halloween costume for tonight).  



There is other hip-hop stuff too - like Brother Ali and Homeboy Sandman at El Rey Theatre or Skeme at Key Club.  Rock fans get a true treat with Jane's Addiction at The Wiltern.  They're supported by Thenewno2.  The Railroad Revival Tour chooches through town too with Band of Horses at Warner Grand Theater. Since it's Halloween Weekend - KCRW hosts their masquerade ball with tunes served up by Z-Trip, Mexican Institute of Sound, Dustbowl Revival, Hanni El Khatib and more.   White Arrows at Constellation Room is also a SUPERGOOD choice.

Exploding Soon...Tic Tic Boom!

Local indie synth rock couple comprised of Leilani Francisco and Mike Delay, but better known as Tic Tic Boom! recently released this cute video starring their pseudo-child (their dog). The two Monday night, November 21st, at The Echo with the other members (drummer and bassist) of Tic Tic Boom! to continue their recent blitz of the local scene that has seen the act perform at Saint Rocke, Harvard & Stone, USC, The Central SAPC, Space 15 Twenty, Lot 1 Cafe and more.

Those who may have missed out on those - might have heard "Just Friends" on KROQ or caught it on Friend Zone or The Real L Word, where TTB music has recently been featured. Whether you're already hip to them or not - check out the cute video, as well as a live rendition of the same. If you like what you see/hear - you can get some more of that tonight at The Echo for FREE where the band is joined by K. Flay, Lesands and resident The Chain Gang of 1974!

TONIGHT'S a SCHOOL NIGHT w/ EULOGIES & FAMILY OF THE YEAR

Swing by Bardot tonight and check out Dangerbird Records band Eulogies, along with Family of The Year and resident DJ's Chris Douridas and Valida, to get your work week started properly. Eulogies will be reveling in their label mates Conan performance (Fitz & The Tantrums perform on Conan tonight) as well as sharing music of their most recent record, Tear The Fences Down. That record is still only available digitally, but should be available in physical copy sometime in March 2011.

Family of The Year will hopefully be performing some new material (their last full length came out in 2009) and most likely will dose the crowd with 'ChugJug,' their song that was featured in an Advil commercial in 2010. If you've never caught them - they've got a throwback vocal rock appeal that's been likened to Fleetwood Mac.

Mondrian Sessions Start Tonight w/ Francis and The Lights

IAMSOUND Records presents the Mondrian Sessions tonight, and many other nights, in conjunction with a host of other cool sponsors (KCRW, Fader, Guitar Center...)

The event hosts special guest DJs all the time and better yet, good talent from 8 to midnight. The series begins with Francis & The Lights tonight before going on hiatus for a few weeks, so if you'd like a sneak peak at what the scene might be like for the rest of the Skybar Poolside Performance season at Mondrian.

Funktober First Round Up

Los Angeles' autumn concert season opened on a high note this past Friday when Funktober First took over The Roxy. An intimate crowd of funk, soul and boogie enthusiasts gathered at 9009 Sunset Blvd. for what became a memorable, enjoyable and highly dance-able evening.

Things got started and were kept moving all night by KCRW's Jeremy Sole, who was performing in the DJ booth upstairs just above the SUPERGOODMUSIC banner. Playing a smattering of old school soul, including some choice Sly & The Family Stone, he had the crowd vibing out before Tha Boogie even stepped on stage.

Shortly after 9, the only act I had not yet seen on the bill, Tha Boogie, made their presence known. The group, led by two male and one female vocalist, entered with choreographed movements and extremely loud clothing.

Playing for about thirty minutes, Tha Boogie made sure the crowd did just that. The energy of the band seemed to leach into the crowd, as the band drew nearly all of the VIP section onto the dance floor to enjoy the rising band's set. Toe-tapping and butt-bumping with strangers before 10 pm signified that this night was just the music I was looking for.

Sadly, Tha Boogie did not play longer as I truly enjoyed their lively performance and exciting stage theatrics. Once Tha Boogie had wrapped up their set, Jeremy Sole resumed his duties as the nights mixmaster of ceremonies. I would love a copy of his playlist because he was spinning nothing but supergoodness as the not to sizeable crowd barely budged from the dance-floor.

Next up was The Soul of John Black - who confidently took to his guitar almost immediately. While the music was very enjoyable, TSJB lacked the driving rhythms and energy of his predecessor. The pleasant melodies emanating from the accomplished musician's guitar kept the mood right, but the slowed pace led many patrons to the bar for re-hydration.

John Black ripped his urban bluesy rock soul for a good half hour before retiring backstage and letting the funk take over the room again. Sole kept the crowd's ears saturated with funktober's finest beats for at least a half hour while the stage crew repositioned instruments and prepared for the 9 piece extravaganza that is Orgone.

The band opened with a nice dirty funk jam that again got almost the entire crowd to join them on the dance floor. The crowd, which had grown considerably between the end of TSJB and Orgone, definitely were ready to get down....and so was the band.

Running through a handful of original tracks from Killion Floor, Bacando and their latest release, Cali Fever, Orgone and Fanny Franklin reminded the crowd why they are not only the best funk band to ever come out of Los Angeles, but also the perfect act to headline Funktober First.

Fanny (pictured above and below), got absolutely wicked on the microphone. Her voice has so much range and her soul is so deep that she occasionally reminds me of Sharon Jones - just a very petite one. She killed on "Who Knows Who," amongst other originals, and as always, nailed vocals on some of my favorite covers - including "Ain't No Use," "Brothers on the Slide," and their P-Funk closer "Cosmic Slop."

The rest of the band, including Stewart Killen (pictured below), backed up Fanny quite nicely. Holding down a very heavy rhythm for about 90 minutes, Stewart and crew kept the crowds feet moving almost as quickly as Sergio's (guitarist) hands.

As the night wound down around 1 a.m., I couldn't help but be pleased with the enthusiasm the acts brought and the seeming delight of the intimate crowd. Although the venue was not packed full, Funktober First was a good step in the right direction for not only all the bands that performed, but SUPERGOODMUSIC as well. Couldn't be happier with the quality of sound(s) at our very first event at The Roxy.

A Night With Chromeo (Lommabot Checks in From NYC)

We've got a fancy FILTER friend who keeps her finger on the pulse of the coolest haps, including what's brewing in the music scene, at all times...Lauren Lomma, maybe you've heard of her? If you haven't, you should try and follow her on twitter @lomfry3 (if she'll accept your request) because she is hilarious and she knows what's what.

Aggressively trying to rival anyone for most wicked concert schedule of the summer, Lommabot, as we like to call her, has been seeing anyone and everyone in NYC, from Cut Copy to Chromeo. With just a few weeks ahead of them before the scheduled release of their third studio album, Business Casual (set for September 14, 2010), the latter apparently they threw it down for the east coasters.

The humidity plaguing the streets of New York was nothing in comparison to the heat being generated inside the Bowery Ballroom on this particular Thursday night. Bodies bounced against each other, everyone danced in excitement as Holy Ghost! belted out some delicious tunes. The Passion Pit-esque quality of their beats was a welcome change to the classic DJ sets they usually dole out. The crowd bopped their heads and moved their bodies in approval, though they were all really waiting in anticipation for the headliner: Chromeo. Unbeknownst to the fans who pummeled their way to the foot of the stage, Dave 1 and P-Thugg were saddled up in the back near the bar. Dave 1 nodding to the beat, clad in all white with some sort of retro/hipster Jew-fro hybrid atop his head. P-Thugg, however, talked it up to a sassy brunette chick, only exiting after finally catching her digits.

The lights glared on, and the classic intro of “Chro-me-o. Oooh! Oh!” blasted through the speakers; the crowd was instantly electrified. The duo came to the stage, Dave 1 donning a pair of classic wayfarers to shield himself from the glaring lights. They opened with a song from their soon-to-be released album, “Business Casual”, and throughout the night they alternated from promising new songs to reliable super-jams off their previous albums. The Hall & Oates of the electro era managed to excite the masses with classic hits such as “Fancy Footwork” and “Bonafied Lovin’”, as well as a Dire Straits cover, “Money For Nothing." Rocking out under the hot lights of the stage these two are the super-hip electrofunk geniuses known as Chromeo, where as moments earlier they were merely David and Patrick of Montreal: just a couple of hipsters admiring another fellow musician, being oh-so cool sipping on their cheap beers and lavishing in the advances of the ladies. One ridiculously amazing set and an encore of “Momma’s Boy” later, and every New Yorker in the place was dripping in sweat, grinning from ear-to-ear, and running home to scoop up tickets to whatever Chromeo show they could hit up next.

The duo comes to Los Angeles on August 29th to the Hollywood Bowl, where they will share the stage with The Chemical Brothers, YACHT and KCRW's Jason Bentley. You can purchase tickets here.

Saint Motel Checks Into Hammer Museum

July opened up with a bang like fireworks when Saint Motel tore down the gallery for the capacity crowd at Hammer Museum last night. Gathered for the first installment of KCRW's "Also I Like To Rock" series, presented in conjunction with fellow music aficionado, Kevin Bronson, and his Buzzbands LA, the crowd was treated to one of the finer performance groups to mature out of Los Angeles recently.

We say performance group because Saint Motel is not just a band; Saint Motel is a fucking experience. Armed with the forces of a charming front man with a killer smile and vocals to boot (A/J Jackson), a funky Vietnamese base maestro (Dak), a porno-mustached guitar wizard (Sharp) and the drum general himself (Greg) - this quartet is going to be a household brand name soon if not already. With an educational background in film, these guys not only play instruments but also put on a multimedia extravaganza at each performance.




Thursday's party was no different - as A/J had a camera on his mic, Sharp had a camera down the neck of his guitar and one of the band mate's mothers paraded around the crowd with a portable camera. Shove all that footage into a blender and splice in some random old movies, blank screens and the occasional SAINT MOTEL word image and it becomes a constantly changing piece of artwork. Although the band did not wear their typical themed attire, which adds to the spectacle because their costumes are also part of the experience, the band was dressed to well in button downs, the occasional suspenders and some hipster shoes. Beyond the visuals and dress, being in the setting of the Hammer's courtyard made the show feel almost magical.




Opening with my personal favorite "Do Everything Now", the band wasted no time in piquing the interest of newcomers who'd only heard of the band as part of KCRW's recent push of the performance and the song "Butch", which was KCRW's download of the day earlier in the week.
After playing a non ForPlay song as #2, whose title I don't yet know, the band returned to their stellar EP material rifling off "Pity Party" and "Dear Dictator" with relative ease. Side note, you can check out their video for the Sam Sparro remix of Dear Dictator exclusively on Filter here.




Despite having already gone through my favorites (Now and Dictator), I could tell that there was an energy in the crowd that wasn't going to erupt until the boys delivered "Butch." When they dropped the KCRW trending song, the crowd exploded and, as usual, the quartet exceeded expectations - their enthusiasm and energy permeating the crowd from their perched point on the stage, even pulling some participation from the balcony level.

I chatted it up with the insider and fan based crowd before trying to squeeze my way into the packed merchandise area to acquire the sexy Saint Motel V-Neck. In addition to the tee, I tried my best to get some Saint Motel Herbie Hancock's on my breasts, but the scores of fans waiting for their photo opportunity ultimately wore on my patience and I decided I'd give A/J, Sharp, Dak and Greg the honor of sharpie-ing my chesticles some other day....perhaps at Sunset Junction, their next Los Angeles performance (as of now).
