Cuz's Corner Ep. 4 - The Mowglis

As spud says, these dudes are "the homies." For about a year, unbeknownst to the Mowglis and myself, we were neighbors. Like, I knew they were people, and I knew they lived down the block. I just didn't know that they were The Mowglis and they didn't know that I had a Jam Van.

They had a robot statue in their front yard made out of guitars and a small television. It was recently removed. Shame on the new tenant for that. When The Mowglis lived their they used to hang signs from a tree branch that jutted out onto Broadway Ave. and alerted folks to their backyard performances. So I'd stumbled upon parties at their pad, unfortunately never caught any music. I did however know a chick that fell off of their porch at one of the shindigs. Maybe they saw her fall, I dunno, she claimed she snuck out of there real quick-like and wasn't seen. My dog, The RZA, played with their dog, Abby, in the street one day. He's white and fluffy, she's black and fluffy. On one of these fluff-head encounters guitarist Josh Hogan and I introduced ourselves. My take away from that meeting was that he was a nice dude, that's it, never occurred that we'd be seeing eachother again in a parking lot about a year later and he'd be with seven of his friends, and I'd be with a few of mine, and we'd hang out, and I'd finally get to hear them play their "love rock."

That's all to say that they are indeed the homies. They kicked it again with us at Bonnaroo, even filmed another Jam Van session in between beers. That's coming out tomorrow.  For now we have this memory from the Roxy, the first time they ever met Spud. He's now the hood's biggest Mowglis fan, and they're now touring the country relentlessly spreading the love. I just hope they still have time to make robot statues.

Los Angeles Tonight (April 30, 2013)

Its the final day of the month - which could mean its time to tame down spending to make rent...or its time for the turn up.  If its the latter - we've got a host of musical offerings to suggest.

Topping our list are two shows on the eastside.  If you're feeling Brit Week, then Chad Valley is your man.  He produces and sings simultaneously, effecting his vocals into some sexy, somewhat ambient strange indie electronic music.  His show at The Echo is definitely worthy of your attention.  For more sexy vocals, albeit a different variety that is more hip-hop and poetry informed, consider Robert Raimon Roy at Bootleg Theater.  The triple R threat is joined by the soul of Jack Davey and the electronics of Jonwayne making for an eclectic, eccentric night of dopeness.

We have tickets to give away for both shows - so hit up contest@supergoodmusic.com or mention us and the artists on twitter to get in on the action!

On the grittier rock side of things consider Great White Buffalo at Hemingway's or The Record Company at The Mint.  For the latter, I might advise sticking out for their Cinco De Mayo show at Venice Love Shack because its $10 for all you can drink and all you can jam out to.

Full list of shows below.

  • Robyn Hitchcock [pictured] & the Venus 3 and Peter Buck @ the Troubadour

Los Angeles Tonight (April 15, 2013)

Got a post Coachella hang-over?  Didn't go, not hungover at all and feeling a bit down?  The best cure for both is to go see more music.  If we're suggesting shows for tonight, and we are, then we'd say go see The Faint with White Arrows at The Observatory.  Or, if you want to get real crazy with your Monday, check out Koshachella with Kosha Dillz, the Hebrew Hammer of Hip Hop (aka Yung Menorah, Lil' Latke, etc. etc.), Y-Luv and some other bands will be rocking The Joint with Kosha tonight.

Giveaway - The Last Bison at The Mint Saturday March 30th

Do you like The Avett Brothers?  The Lumineers?  Heartless Bastards?  Tallest Man on Earth?  Bands that fall into that overly broad but in a good way "Americana" category?  If so, then you may want to jump on The Last Bison bandwagon as soon as possible.  Lucky for you we're giving away a pair of tickets to do just that at The Mint LA this Saturday, March 30.   To win just tweet at "@SUPERGOODMUSIC, @JamintheVan, @MintLA, @TheLastBison #LastBison, or email us at Contests@SUPERGOODMUSIC.com with The Last Bison in the subject.

There's a good chance that this band, who is signed to Universal Music Group, takes off in the next year, so catching them in an intimate venue like The Mint might be worth its weight in "remember when" stories come next year.  Dig on their video for a cover of M83's "Midnight City" as well as their full album over on their Bandcamp.

Los Angeles Tonight (March 20, 2013)

Hump day yo! Insert sexual innuendo there and proceed to the recommended concerts that will no doubt help you find that hump at the end of the day. I mean, get over that hump.

Anyhow, an exceptional week of music offerings continues in Los Angeles with Mos Def at The Belasco Theater. It's not so often that this place has a concert going on, and this happens to be an awesome one, so if you've got tix or still can get, then lucky you. Also lucky you if you're going to check out Imagine Dragons at The Wiltern for their Night Visions Tour or Wavves + FIDLAR, & Cheatahs at The Echo. I know for sure the latter is sold out, so hit the Craigslist if you're trying to get there last minute. It should be pretty fuzzy up in there. I expect a lot of angst riddled youngins who are angry with their parents to attend.

However, if you have no tickets to any of the bigger marquees this evening and your pockets are running a bit thin, consider the packed line up at tonight's Low End Theory at The Airliner featuring Baths, DAUWD, Dark Time Sunshine, TA-KU + residents Daddy Kev, Nobody, The Gaslamp Killer, D-Styles, & Nocando, that place will probably be pretty turnt tonight. Question is, will you?

Open Letter of Advice to Emerging Artists

Dear Emerging Artists,

Hope 2013 is treating you well and your career is headed in the right direction.  Hopefully you have already made some strides in 2013.  If you haven't - and you are trying to understand why - maybe the first place you should look is in the mirror.

While I will passionately defend an artist and zealously represent them - nothing I do for an artist can replace an artist actually trying themselves.  The artist's effort doesn't stop at just making great music and releasing it to the world.  An emerging artists needs to be their own publicist, their own best marketer, own icon... If you're an artist and you are trying to build a brand, an experience, an identity that is more than just the music that comes out of your mouth or thru your hands - you need to work on that.
Too often I consult or work with artists who just expect the sun, the moon and the stars because they put out a good record.  Artists all over the world create and release good records everyday.  There are more artists and more good records than there are highly lucrative opportunities for exposure so simply having a good record isn't a license to get paid.  You have to do more.  You have to a do a lot more.

If you've got a team - they should be helping you do more, but an artist shouldn't rely solely on their team.  An artist that makes little to no money shouldn't expect that just having a good song along with a  manager or publicist is the perfect recipe for success.  You actually have to put additional effort into that recipe as the artist.   To expect someone to turn you from zero to hero and get rich quickly is pretty unrealistic.  Like finding a needle in a haystack.  And most artists will say they are that needle in a haystack...but are you?  Look in the mirror and ask yourself these questions.

Do you have a voice that is uniquely different than other talented artists?
Are you an exceptionally talented musician/instrumentalist that stands out from other instrumentalists?
Do you produce and also write?
Do you have a studio you can access for free and make high quality sound recordings?
Do you have a fan base and network already that approaches 100,000?
Are you comfortable performing on stage?
Do more than 250 people come out to see you in your hometown?
Are you drop dead gorgeous?
Are you below the age of 22?
Do you have an innate cool and swagger to you that is undeniable?

Unless the answer to all those questions is yes - you're not the needle in the haystack and my advice would be to work harder - even if you don't think that is possible.  So...good luck in 2013.

Artists that are working hard and on their grind - contact me at brandon@supergoodmusic.com about opportunities - including performances at SXSW and recording with Jam In The Van.

Sincerely,

Brandon Dorsky

Tonight in L.A. (February 2, 2013)

Keep the first weekend of February moving in the right direction with some old school 45 anthems from Funky Sole at The Echo (free before 11) or the massive electronic sounds of Porter Robinson at Hollywood Palladium.  Speaking of the Palladium...don't sleep on those Justin Timberlake tickets going on sale for Grammy night.  His return will be an epic show I'm sure.

Beyond dance floor action - you can get some throwback soul from Earth Wind & Fire at Fantasy Springs Resort, some lessons in pimping from Too $hort at Canyons, laughs courtesy of Adam Carolla at The Roxy and rock-esque stylings from Gram Rabbit at LA Fort and Dengue Fever at Detroit Bar.

Tonight in L.A. (February 1, 2013)

Kick off your month (and Super Bowl weekend) on the right foot with a variety of musical options in Los Angeles.

Personal favorites - Karl Denson's Tiny Universe are set to funk things up at El Rey Theatre with support from Howlin' Rain while other skilled instrumentalists, The Wood Brothers, provide a more laid back set of sounds at Largo.

For more aggressive rock consider Hell Ride featuring Mike Watt, Peter Distefano, Stephen Perkins and more at The Central SAPC.  For the jams - ALO and The California Honeydrops at Troubadour would definitely be a stellar choice.

Rising star Father John Misty performs at SoHo House while a buzzband of yesteryear, The Happy Hollows, try to fill up The Satellite.  For eclectic, cool and a good crowd - The Natural History Museum hosts electrifying performer Gaslamp Killer and his bobbing headnod and The Echo brings in Geographer.
