SUPERGOODMUSIC Loves Loves Loves Ebony Bones

Yeah. I'll admit it. I fucking love Ebony Bones.

Ebony_Bones.jpg

Not only is her performance just an absolute spectacle, but she is totally gorgeous and adorable on stage and off. I've seen her twice and I'm totally sold.

ebony-bones.jpg

Let's start with the band and their music - her brand of indie punk funk is cooler than ice cream packed in dry ice. The punk male fueled rhythm section is then complimented by her African tribal looking oompah-loompah backing vocalists/bottle percussionists, a beaded out guitarist and an interesting saxophonist. Ebony is the center of it all with her commanding voice, vibrant outfits and eye-popping stage presence.

kk-group.jpg

They kicked it off with one of my top 10 songs of 2009 - "We Know All About You." The stage opened without Ebony - but with the backing vocalists shaking hand fans and beating bottles with drumsticks, the bassist strumming the three chord progression that leads into the song, and the drummer standing up ready to kill the snare when Ebony took stage. She came up fierce, in a wild leopard print outfit, aggressive eye make-up and eyelashes, ready to execute.

The crowd of eccentric hipsters took the cue and the back of the room exploded into a full on jungle dance party. You had to be there to really understand the energy that was pumping through the room. It had been brewing since before the performance when the DJ was spinning some Cut Copy and this clan of queens just was getting after it in the middle of the room - bumping into people, spilling their drinks, clapping, snapping and having a gay old time.

After their amazing, dance inducing rendition of "We Know All About You," (which you can download here) they did a song that I believe is called "Warrior" - which also kicked ass. Ebony jumped into the crowd to amp it up a bit more before leading us into a full on dance reminiscent of the Tootsie Roll as she screamed for us to go "to the left, to the left, to the right, to the right, to the front, to the front..." If I wasn't having enough fun - she just took it to another level with a cover of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall."

A wardrobe change ensued - where Ebony returned in a slimmer, but equally funky black dress that included conic shaped breasts a la Madonna and was highlighted by these gigantic black circular bracelets. From there, Ebony got a little soulful before laying us to rest with a final throw-down in the middle of the crowd.

Exhausted from the absolute dance-fest, I couldn't muster the energy to stay for the Club NME DJs or go hit up Daedelus downstairs. I got in the ride and drove home - completely satisfied, danced out and my ebony bones totally shaken. I cannot wait until the next time I see them again. Come back to LA soon please....

Back in Business - Orgone Pulled Out My O Face

It's so great to be back in Los Angeles. Things are moving forward in the music world - and LA is really the center of our music world. We quickly got back to it last night with stops at both Spaceland, for Orgone (pronounced Org-own, similar in sound to organ) and Nomo and then a stop at The Roxy for Scion's House Party featuring 12th Planet, amongst others.

With all the excitement, RCA ended up leaving his wallet at home...so the night started a little bit later than expected. Nonetheless, it was a funk-filled return to Los Angeles last night – as I basically went from the airport to Spaceland to see Nomo & Orgone throw it down.

Orgone, the female vocalized funk band from California, came on at about 10 p.m. and were nothing short of spectacular. In addition to the on fire rhythms coming from the bassist, drummer and percussionist - the three piece horn section did their part to round out the funkfest.

They rifled through material new and old, including several stretches of seamless transitions between songs that kept the energy going. You could’ve closed your eyes and thought you were in a bar in New Orleans in the ‘70s. Midway through their performance they had managed to assemble a little dance party near the front of the stage that they kept moving with heavy rhythms on “Funky Nassau” and a raucous cover of “I Get Lifted.” To make the vibe even cooler – DJ Nu Mark was in the house getting his boogie on too.

Having enjoyed themselves a bit too much on stage and with the crowd, Fanny Franklin led the pack through a speedy closer

Nomo came on a long forty minutes after Orgone stepped off stage. The Ubiquity label midwest natives showcased a different side of jazz - one that was a little less funky, a little more melodic, but nonetheless extremely rhythmic. Part of that rhythm was held down by Eric Hall, one of the two drummers performing, who also played rhythm guitar at times. He and Elliott, the bands ringleader, have been staples of Nomo since the bands birth in Ann Arbor.

Performing to a handsome size crowd, Nomo continued fueling the trend of dancing bodies on the dance-floor well past midnight. Unfortunately, we did not catch the end of their show...but that is because we went to The Roxy for Scion's event.

We didn't bring our camera inside, so we have no photos to share - but we'll try and remember to do that next time. Who knew so many dubstep hungry youngsters would come out on a Wednesday night? Not only did we shake with the fiery bass, we witnessed some feisty youngsters throw it down in the lobby, some American Apparel poster children getting freaky on the dance-floor and candy flippers and dope smokers getting arrested on the sidewalk. It had all the makings of a reality show a la Jersey Shore.

Funk & Jazz Party at Spaceland Tonight!

Orgone

Some of our favorite ambassadors of funk, ORGONE, are playing tonight with other Supergood friends, NOMO, at Spaceland.

This night of jazz/funk/improvisation will surely be unique, exciting and smile inducing. Both bands are poised to explode even larger than their current following, particularly Orgone, who has shared the stage with Greyboy All-Stars, amongst others.

Whether you've seen these larger ensembles before or night - we highly recommend you check em out tonight!

Watch The Grammys - its the Best Live Music in Town Tonight

We could advise you to go to various places in town tonight to catch the potential next big thing or just to hear a smooth crooner or some sexy guitar, however, we don't think that is where you'd witness the best and most supergood music there is to see on this last Sunday of January.

Actually, this is one of the few times we are going to advise you to stay home. Stay there and watch the Grammys. Maybe leave to go to Target to get yourself some 3D specs to enjoy the Michael Jackson tribute performance to the fullest, but maybe you saved yours from Avatar and are hoping those work.

If the Grammy's are too mainstream for you or you just want to DVR them for time porting so that you can skip commercials and enjoy a Sunday on the town, then here is who is playing and where they are playing:
