The Calm Before the NYE Storm

The next two nights of music in L.A. (the 29th and 30th) just don't look that stellar. There really is not too much pulling my heart strings, certainly not for this evening.

Tomorrow, the 30th, is a little bit better. If I were to be in downtown LA around sunset, I'd stick by Pershing Square to catch The Growlers perform during the Spaceland on Ice series, particularly because it is free. Also downtown, Kinky will be at Conga Room, Ne-Yo will be Club Nokia and Mika Miko will be at The Smell.

Personally, I recommend saving up your energy for the 31st. There is so much good music and fun stuff to do in town on NYE I don't know what I'm going to do?!?!?!

Musical Santa Is In Los Angeles...

Yo ho ho - Merry Xmas. I hope you and yours are enjoying the day off of work. I might not be working on Christmas except that I'm jewish, it's almost noon, I didn't have a tree, no one invited me to a xmas eve sleepover (WTF?!?) and I haven't seen anyone until five minutes ago when that crazy musical santa swooped by in his pimp sled with 8 bass heavy subwoofers blaring the latest and greatest remix from Casxio - who just happen to be performing at The Viper Room on January 5th, 2010 during 10 days of 2010. Along with them will be Funeral Party and Odd Modern and, because we're in the spirit of giving, we're hosting a free ticket giveaway from now thru the New Year!

Thank you Cashflow!!!/Brief on Last Night

Just got to post - cause the DJ behind Kid Cudi, the Man on the Moon himself, just hooked it up with some tix for the show at Club Nokia tonight.

I am so excited, it warrants a posting. Kid Cudi is fucking great. Sure, maybe I am biased in my opinion. I took an interest in him early and had hometown respect and appreciation for him because him and I both went to Shaker Heights High School. But, he certainly is creative and willing to push the envelope aggressively in ways other artists just

Beyond his last album being a noteworthy debut, eccentric and unique and not relying very heavily on his mixtapes at all. In addition to that - he is hitting with my current driving round LA favorite "Memories" with David Guetta. Cudi just has vision in his choice of lyrics and a chemistry with the words he chooses such that even if they are simple, they sound better. They sound like he owns them.

Can't wait to see him tonight. Thank you Kaslow - you are the man!

Also - future post coming about last night's amazing MUSTACHE & SWEATER PARTY. The musical chairs was hilariously competitive...and the prizes were incredible (holiday themed ashtrays, tickets to concerts, chocolate roses, cars). That post will include pics and more later. Yet, I can't go without mentioning how incredible ODD MODERN was. So. Much. Fun. They brought it early, they kept bringing it, and the crowd asked for the multiple encore. Simply magic. Speaking of magic...

Magic on Wax by Schpilkas dropped the funky rhythms, even on a borrowed turntable (thanks Reazon!) after an equipment malfunction. Not to be left out - Dan Stessen warmed up the crowd and kept it funny with his MC-ing, and Paz kept that crowd warm in anticipation of Odd Modern.

Like I said, a more complete rundown of exactly what happened at the soon to be notorious Mustache & Sweater Party will come later. Thanks to everyone who came, tried to come or thought about coming. Extra special thanks to those who donated to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society!

MUSTACHE & SWEATER PARTY - FINAL UPDATE

From the airport to the thrift store to the 99 cent store to the laptop, SUPERGOODMUSIC has been busy getting ready for tonight's holiday extravaganza.

Doors open early (7 pm) as Dan Stessen will begin the night MCing and giving us the what's what on the Mustache & Sweater scene. As the crowd comes to bear - Paz kicks off the music with his live soulful hip-hop blend. He will be followed by the exciting headlining duo that is Odd Modern - whose synthy catchy dance-pop just smacks you in the face when you see their live show. All of that illness will be further enhanced by the turntablism of Schpilkas' Magic on Wax.

Dancing is going to happen. Musical chairs is going to happen. Sweater competition is going to happen. Drinking is going to happen (unless, of course, you're sober or the DD). But, one thing is for damn sure, fun is going to happen.
So...trim those mustaches to competitive form and get out that hideously ugly sweater. There is fun to be had, people to impress and prizes to be won.

See you tonight at Dakota Live Music Lounge - 1026 Wilshire Blvd.

Find me in my pseudo-fu manchu. I call it a fun manchu. If you find me, have me get out my camera and let me videotape you giving a shout out - I will personally buy you a drink.

SO - holler at me. My sweater will be the ugliest!

MUSTACHE & SWEATER PARTY - TUESDAY DEC. 22nd

For real, this event is going to be sick. Check out the updated flyer - Grassroots California is going to be selling some of their hats at the event and part of the sales will be going to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as well. SO....you can even get some holiday shopping done while having a good time.

Throw in the fact that if you RSVP to brandon@supergoodmusic.com that you'll have a little goodie bag as if you were leaving a 2nd graders birthday party and it just doesn't make any f'ing sense why you wouldn't come if you're in Los Angeles!

MUSTACHE & SWEATER PARTY - TUESDAY DEC. 22nd

After last night's Orgone performance at The Mint - the next thing I'm really looking forward to is the holiday party I'm hosting at Dakota Live Music Lounge (1026 Wilshire Blvd.) on Tuesday night. Not only is it going to be a great night of music with the likes of Odd Modern, Paz and Magic on Wax by Schpilkas, but it is going to be festive and part of the proceeds go back to charity.

Don't forget to don your sweaters and mustaches so that you can take advantage of the door discount, drink specials and merchandise specials once you're there.

First Friday of December

Sorry to those of you who check on a daily basis as we did not have a posting for yesterday's shows - but there were some great ones. The Stone Foxes and Danko Jones tore up their free show at Highlands (Thank you Hunnypot!). And, Dramarama at Pershing Square was also free and decent (apologies for not listing it in the initial blast). FYI, Pershing Square is doing free music several nights a week - so make sure to check their listings to stay up to date on opportunities to see free music.

Anyhow, Los Angeles has a steamy weekend of music and it kicks off tonight, December 4th, with a handful of talented musicians performing all over town. If you are into the singer/songwriter variety, than I would check out Stephen Wrabel at Room 5. His song "Jupiter", while extremely depressing, is so fucking incredible it is hard to suggest that you go see someone else play.

However, that is exactly what I am going to do, because if you've never seen Charlie Hunter than you should go to The Mint because he is absolutely mesmerizing, intoxicating, overwhelming and incredible in concert. The way his hands move on his 8 string is unprecedented and if you've never seen it, it cannot be appropriately translated in these words. He MUST be witnessed and experienced to understand how incredible of a musician he is. He will be playing with his Trio at The Mint tonight as well as tomorrow.

For an eclectic mix up of music, I would highly recommend Airborne Toxic Event with the LA Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall. It is rare that you have a more mainstream artist performing at the WDCH with LA Phil and whatever beautiful music is created tonight will be unique and undoubtedly well orchestrated. If you are fortunate enough to have tickets - good for you.

For those that want to shake their booty - check out DANCEisM with Robot Love and Villains at Echoplex.

Other artists worthy of mention is the always good Jon Brion at Largo, Less Than Jake with Fishbone at House of Blues and Band of Skulls will be on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

And last, but not least, it is First Fridays in Venice. Stroll Abbott Kinney, drank your drank and be merry with the hordes of west-siders keeping the scene fun and funky.
