SILVERSUN PICKUPS SHOW @ ECHOPLEX THURSDAY

Stop the presses folks - Silversun Pickups is playing a special benefit show at Echoplex on Thursday April 30th.  Tickets went on sale fifteen minutes ago.  They are $25.

I cannot go because of my movie premier, but if you are not going to see LAST CUP you might consider going to this benefit show.  The Eulogies will be supporting.  Only buy tickets if you plan on going.  I would not recommend trying to buy tickets and and sell them because you can only pick them up at the door, and ticket purchases are limited to 2 a customer.

WORD?!?!?!

  • Burial and Four Tet are releasing a record next week that is available in limited edition from Bleep.com.   Burial produced one side of the record and Four Tet the other.  Don’t miss out….
  • While I thought I made an awesome decision to go see Mayer Hawthorne atEchoplex on Tuesday night – as he is a rising talent with a decent live performance that will only improve over time.  The show was good – Hawthorne looks like a budding young crooner, and his band matches him well, (they just need a little more flare to their show), but probably not as good as the party that was going on at Cinespace that featured non other than Mr. Thomas Bangalter himself (from Daft Punk!!!) sans robo-helmet.  He spun three tracks at Busy P’s birthday celebration (including Prince’s “Raspberry Beret”), after other members of the Ed Banger crew had already graced the 1’s and 2’s with their presence.
  • Low-key weekend for me, but some of you may have hit the Grill Cheese Festival that happened downtown.  I heard it was delicious
  • There will be another BEERFEST hitting Los Angeles, this time on the east side at Echoplex on Saturday May 9th.  Craft Beer Fest.  Details will follow in the next update….
  • On June 2, Jay $tay Paid, a collection of 25 unreleased J Dilla beats, is scheduled to be released.  Pete Rock is said to have arranged and mixed the entire album.  If you are a hip hop head – you should be salivating.
  • On Thursday April 30thLast Cup: Road To The World Series of Beer Pong, the film I co-executive produced and worked on, is opening the LA United Film Festival.  The film starts at 7 pm at the Vista Theatre.  Tickets are available here http://www.losangelesunitedfest.com.  By buying a ticket you are guaranteed entry into the after party at Happy Endings where there will be beer pong and the chance to win some prizes.

MORE DAFT PUNK VIDEOS FROM LAST TUESDAY...

FREE MONDAY NIGHTS

I know there are a lot of free monday nights in town, and I will write more about all of them at some point (Spaceland, Echo, etc.), but I want to draw particular attention to Funkmosphere which takes place at Carbon in Culver City.

Located on Venice Blvd., across the street from Inn N Out, Carbon is just a perfect little stand alone bar....and on Monday nights it is the venue for a damn good DJ hosted vinyl funk party. There are b-boy crews, amongst other things. Just watch this video and you'll get the idea of the fun you might have.

More Daft Punk From Tuesday @ Cinespace

Check out this link - you can catch some video footage of the impromptu madness! Daft Punk's management has been policing the youtube clips...so watch before it is too late.

Bangalter closed out his 3 song set with Prince's "Raspberry Beret." Check it out.

Just cut and paste this link:

Daft Punk Played Tuesday (And I Wasn't There :( )

As hype as I was about the Mayer Hawthorne show, I just found out the show that I opted not to go to (The Whip @ Cinespace) was a Busy P birthday party that featured all of Ed Banger on the 1's and 2's -- Justice, Busy P, Kavinsky, Sebastian, Mehdi and Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter!!!

I totally regret having gone to Echoplex instead now, even though the show was dope. I wish there were places that routinely stayed open until 4 am in LA, and I wish Cinespace was one of those places, because then maybe I would've dropped by.

Lucybell - Top Chilean Artist @ Knitting Factory

Lucybell, the best-selling band in Chile (they've gone Gold 6 times), will be bringing their brand of music, highlighted by a blend of electronic and acoustic/rock guitar, to The Knitting Factory on Friday June 5th. Their most recent release, Comiendo Fuego, was co-produced by Adam Mosley (Kiss, Roxette, the Cure).

Tickets for the show are $25. I'm not sure if it will sell out because, quite honestly, I don't know too much about the Chilean music scene in Los Angeles. Nonetheless, if I am in town, I may check them out. I like the bass-line in this cut -

Mayer Hawthorne Is Coming Up...

Saw Mayer Hawthorne and The County open up for James Pants and Peanut Butter Wolf tonight. Mayer has a style that has both a little bit of rap swagger and a little bit of Chris Isaak crooner (but not as sexy). I was impressed with his performance, and the band backing him (The County) was decent.

I expect to hear his name pop up more in the future. With the right guidance, or producer, he could really make some moves. It would probably be a good project for Mark Ronson. Although this guy does not have the vocal skills of an Amy Winehouse, Ronson would be a perfect match for creatively using both horn melodies and Mayer's voice to carry a song. At the very least, I am sure that Mayer Hawthorne could benefit from the Ronson treatment.

As for the rest of the night - James Pants disappointed me. It was the first time I saw him perform, and although he had a band, I definitely prefer listening to him on record.

Ont he other hand, PBW was worth the price of admission. PBW did this really cool set involving video DJing. It looked like he was using a program like Serrato that allowed him to scratch music videos. The videos were cool, some of which I had never seen, and at one point he did a multi-song J Dilla tribute...including some of the bangers.

Coachella 2009

Coachella 2009 came and went rather quickly. Before I knew it, it was over.

I had a blast, but I must admit that this was my least favorite Coachella yet. Overall, the entirety of the line-up did not really pack the punch of the last two festivals, especially when you consider the headliners. I don't know what demographic Coachella is now trying to target, but at some point they missed the point by trying to cover too much territory.

That said, I did have a few highlights worthy of mention:

- Etienne De Crecy (or however you spell his name) and his hollywood squares lightshow superbox were absolutely incredible. Probably the most entertaining performance, overall, in my opinion.

- Atmosphere had the best musical performance. No surprise there as Slug continues to master the art of performing over live instrumentation and a DJ at the same time. His eloquence on the microphone is truly unrivaled at this point in time, although there are several MCs whose performances are close to as exhilarating.

This is Atmosphere opening with GOD LOVES UGLY:

This is Atmosphere performing SUNSHINE

- The Dome out front quietly hosted some of the dopest DJs and electronic artists around - including Daedelus, LA Riots and Steve Aoki.. It is a shame that The Dome was not closer to the middle of the festival grounds.

- N.A.S.A. has some of the funkiest stage performance I've seen recently - the girlbots with their green skin and red hair, the weird looking aliens and the structure the artists perform in all enhance their concert experience.

WORD?!?!?
CRAIG DAVID, the intoxicating European male diva, absolutely destroyed The Mint last night with his ice cold cool style and beautiful voice. Women were literally crying (I’m not kidding) because they got some face time Mr. David. He opened with his song “Let’s Dance” (the one with the Bowie sample) and kept it rolling from there – absolutely killing it with “Seven Days” and “Fill Me In” (he didn’t play “Follow Me” ). With only one instrumentalist backing him, Kwame, David’s voice really took the spotlight. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen such a great vocal performer….

COACHELLA is only a few days away. Hope you’re as amped as I am (probably not ). The line-up is truly stellar. Funny enough, while the Beatle’s Paul McCartney is playing Friday night, the son of the Beatle’s George Harrison, Dhani Harrison is playing in his duo thenewno2 with Oliver Hecks, on Saturday. If you want to catch thenewno2, make sure you get there early enough as they go on at 3 pm.

Eminem's New Video "We Made You"

First Video Release from his forthcoming album RELAPSE. Not clear yet if "Crack A Bottle" will be on Relapse, but this song definitely will be.

This is the url to go watch the video online - http://www.freep.com/article/20090407/ENT04/90407027

As usual, he pokes fun at many people in the public eye.

Bloc Party - Palladium - 4/15

I have 4 tickets to Bloc Party at the Palladium and I am not sure I am able to make it. Please post here or e-mail me at supergoodmusicmgmt@gmail.com or brandon.dorsky@gmail.com if you are interested.

Thanks.

SAINT ROCKE IN SOUTH BAY

Saint Rocke has been beefing up their concert calendar in recent months, and I think the community should start to take notice. Although they don't always have heavy hitters come through, they do get some talented musicians. One such musician, Adam Topol, the drummer of Jack Johnson's band, will be playing with his Culver City Dub Collective tonight. Haven't see the Dub Collective, but I've heard good things...

Also, THE ASSEMBLY OF DUST will be playing at Saint Rocke in South Bay on April 22nd.

Dim Mak Records Party - APRIL 12th @ Roxy

Dim Mak Present LA ROUX at the Roxy on APRIL 12th!!!!!! Haven't listened to too much LA ROUX, but everything Dim Mak has hands in is stuff I think is good. If I were in town, I would totally be going to this. PLEASE GO AND TELL ME ABOUT IT!!!!

Guns N Roses Coverband - 4/16

The night before Coachella, a Guns N Roses cover band by the name of Mr. Brownstone is playing at The Troubadour. One of the members of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is in Mr. Brownstone and I imagine the show will be terrorizingly spectacular and nostalgic. You should try and get tickets if you will not already be at Coachella...

Unfortunately (or fortunately) I will already be in or on my way to Coachella. If Guns N Roses cover bands don't satiate your musical palate, maybe you want to go to The Echo on the 16th instead to check BUDOS BAND. Budos Band's most famous song was popularized by NFL Network as the theme song for the NFL last season.

Phoenix "1901"

Yes, I am currently rocking out to Phoenix's "1901" off of their recent Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix EP (The EP also has "Listzomania," which is also great).

I just can't get enough of 1901 since I saw the performance of it on SNL this weekend. I wasn't even a very big Phoenix fan, but 1901 is just too good. The airy beginning with the synth chords busting out into the drum beat - I just love it. The cadence in the vocalists voice fits the song perfectly. I could listen to the first minute on repeat for an hour....

Cartographers - 4/8 at Echo Curio

The Cartographers, http://www.myspace.com/cartographers , are an interesting, rising indie-pop, electronic fused four piece band coming out of East Los Angeles. I like their song "Concrete and Outerspace." They will be playing the Echo Curio on Wednesday April 8th. Check 'em out; I am going to try to go....

WORD?!?!?

  • LA Beerfest was absolutely incredible. I only went on Saturday, and not only was it a gorgeous day, but the beer was plentiful and delicious, the crowd was happy and the games were even on. I hope they does the event next year, or preferably sooner.
  • It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will be performing live (yes, the sitcommers will be performing live) at The Troubadour next weekend, April 17th and 18th, performing the musical “The Nightman Cometh,” which was featured on the show. They will perform other musical numbers. Great idea, unfortunately it is the same weekend as Coachella.
  • Coachella is 2 weekends away! – Hope you’re getting excited. I’m really looking forward to losing my aural virginity with respect to some of the performers, am stoked to catch performances by both N.A.S.A. (Friday) and The Knux (Sunday) for my 1st time, and seeing what the rest of the inevitably wild weekend brings me.

u2 Tix on Sale at 10 AM

Tickets for U2's show at the Hollywood Bowl on October 25th go on sale at 10 am. Black Eyed Peas will be opening. Should be an interesting show, but I'm not going. I hate Bono. I'd rather see the U2 cover band...they're almost as good as the real thing.

Videos of Dancing

Dancing brings an indescribable joy to many people, me included. It also brings the opportunity for extreme embarrassment for some, and consequently, extreme comedy for others.

I'm sure there are many many videos that could be included in this post ( I invite anyone to post hilarious dance videos ones in the comments section). But, there are 2 videos I discovered today that I think need to be shared.

Scott provided me with the link to one of them, which had me laughing out loud for at least a minute - http://www.wimp.com/funniestdance/.

This ping pong celebration is shorter, but equally hilarious. Since it is an adult it only makes it better. His little hand moves are priceless.

These videos make me laugh every time I watch...The plethora of easily portable media devices, including cellphones that record video, should mean that people's ridiculous dancing should only begin to be documented more often. I can only hope I discover it in person, or if not, on YouTube or somewhere else.
